Descriptive psychology

This paper articulates a thesis regarding why psychology has thus far been unable to arrive at a single, widely accepted, theoretical framework, and thus remains in a highly fragmented state.  This thesis concerns psychology’s widely held implicit assumption that science is 100% empirical, and its consequent inattention to many critical pre-empirical matters essential to the creation of successful scientific frameworks  The device employed for communicating this thesis is that of adopting the voice of Isaac Newton, who illustrates in the present “letter” how his own celebrated unifying framework embodied numerous pre-empirical elements, and how it was only by virtue of these elements that he was able to achieve the empirical unification that he did.  Along the way, Mr. Newton makes a number of positive recommendations for the construction of a unifying framework for psychology.

Dass die deskriptive Psychologie zu den Entwicklungen aus Brentanos Wiener Periode gehört, ist eine weitverbreitete Meinung in der Rezeption des Aschaf- fenburger Philosophen. Mein Anliegen im folgenden Aufsatz ist es, diese An- sicht kritisch zu untersuchen. Anhand einer Neubewertung der relevanten Text- stellen aus der Psychologie von 1874 und einer kritischen Untersuchung der spä- teren Quellen und rückblickenden Bemerkungen einiger Schüler und Enkelschü- ler Brentanos möchte ich einige Belege für die These anbieten, dass Brentano über die Unterscheidung zwischen deskriptiver und genetischer Richtung der Psychologie schon als junger Professor in Würzburg verfügte.

Psychognosy (Psychognosie) was the original title of the manuscript of the lectures presented by Franz Brentano in Vienna University in 1890. This manuscript is part of the work entitled Descriptive Psychology (Deskriptive Psychologie). The purpose of this manuscript was divided into two parts: (1) the formulation of psychological categories; (2) to establish the demarcation between psychology and genetic  Psychognosy. Something, however, interested us specifi cally in addition to the demarcation of these two branches of psychology. Our point is the new description of intentional psychical acts, explicit by Brentano from the analysis of consciousness developed in this manuscript. In other words, our research will present the Brentano’s way to describe the unity of consciousness as the whole that is the subject of Psychognosy. Moreover, the fundamental point of our investigation show that, assuming the interpretation inaugurated by Roderick Chisholm (1969), the new description of psychical acts introduced a change in the theory of brentaniana`s intentionality, characterized as abandonment of ontological thesis that supported the intentional in-existence of objects.

RESUMO: Psicognose (Psychognosie)  foi o título original do manuscrito das leituras apresentadas por Franz Brentano na Universidade de Viena, em 1890. Tal manuscrito faz parte da obra intitulada  Psicologia descritiva (Deskriptive Psychologie). O propósito desse manuscrito estava divido em duas partes: (1) formular as categorias psicológicas; (2) estabelecer a demarcação entre a Psicologia genética e a Psicognose. Há algo, porém, que nos interessa especificamente, além da demarcação desses dois ramos da psicologia. Trata-se da nova descrição dos atos psíquicos intencionais, explicitada por Brentano a partir da análise da consciência desenvolvida nesse manuscrito. Em outras palavras, esta investigação apresentará o modo como Brentano descreveu a unidade da consciência como o todo que constitui o objeto da Psicognose. Além disso, o ponto fundamental da nossa investigação mostrará que, assumindo a interpretação inaugurada por Roderick Chisholm (1969), a nova descrição dos atos psíquicos introduziu uma mudança na teoria brentaniana da intencionalidade caracterizada como abandono da tese ontológica que sustentava a in-existência dos objetos intencionais.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an accessible introduction to Descriptive Psychology (“DP”). The chapter includes, in order of presentation, (1) an orientation to the somewhat unorthodox nature of  DP; (2) an explication of DP’s four central concepts, those of “Behavior”, “Person”, “Reality”, and “Verbal Behavior”; and (3) a brief listing of some applications of DP to a variety of important topics.

A short list of issues:

1) Therapist insistence on rules rather than policies. (Rules are like laws. Policies are procedures to follow unless there is reason enough not to.)
2) Inadequate assessment of a) what the couple collectively and individually want; b) what they have the potential to achieve; c) their unrecognized/unmanaged reluctance and resistance to negotiate. 
3) The therapist not knowing they are miscast for the rolls they attempt to play. The therapist misunderstanding their place and their corresponding eligibility to train, interpret, and referee the couple’s negotiation.

In my work, I'm mostly interested in facilitating an empathic moral dialog and negotiation. This requires the couple, and me, to identify the weights we place on what is actually significant to us –– who we are to each other and where our integrity is affirmed or violated.  Assessing this is an area mistakes are made. The stumbling blocks include unconscious self-deception along with what we are consciously reluctant and/or unwilling to share. Assessment and negotiation require sharing evidence that each partner can realistically appreciate the position of the other. What values are flexible? What values are hidden? Does anyone fear change and/or revelations that would violate something essential?

Regarding aspirational claims, reluctance and unconscious resistance: The “two sets of books” dilemma. One set holds the values claimed and spoken while the other holds hidden and disclaimed but motivationally significant values and urges.  The motivations people are reluctant to self-acknowledge resist negotiation and tend to remain under-socialized, “immature” and “triggering”.

As that great moralist Donald Rumsfeld put it, we go to war with the army we have. Like it or not, we negotiate, set boundaries, accommodate, and establish treaties with the actual players and their real assets, liabilities, blind spots, and unresolved secrets.  I sometimes notice therapists stick too closely to rigid aspiration, theory, and procedure at the cost of pragmatics.

I analyse Brentano’s argumentative strategy from his lectures in the Deskriptive Psychologie and how he introduces and reframes his fundamental psychological theses. His approach provides us with the reasons why psychology can be distinguished into different domains of investigation and how the tasks of one of these domains—the descriptive-psychological one—imply a specific understanding about the structure of consciousness. Thereby a mereology of consciousness is developed, which offers the theoretical background to the aforementioned reframing of the Brentanian theses.

O curso tem por objetivo oferecer uma introdução às obras de Franz Brentano e Edmund Husserl, dois filósofos de grande relevância para o pensamento contemporâneo. Brentano foi o proponente de um novo método de investigação da consciência no séc. XIX chamado 'Psicologia Descritiva' ou 'Psicognose', que apresentava uma alternativa à abordagem predominantemente experimental, científico-natural de então. Poucos anos depois, seu discípulo Husserl buscaria se apoiar em suas propostas e oferecer um método aparentado de estudo da experiência, mas com aspirações mais radicais, por ele chamado 'Fenomenologia'. Para considerarmos a obra de ambos os pensadores, buscaremos nos servir deste contexto de herança intelectual que os marca e examinar: (i) algumas das principais teses de Brentano em sua mais conhecida obra, a Psicologia do Ponto de Vista Empírico (1874), de modo a termos uma noção geral de sua compreensão da experiência humana; (ii) a maneira como Husserl introduz e define a Fenomenologia em sua primeira grande obra, as Investigações Lógicas (1900-1901), de modo a compreendermos suas relações de apoio em e diferenciação de Brentano. Notaremos que um dos pontos decisivos desta relação são as críticas de Husserl às concepções de fenômeno e à doutrina geral da percepção em Brentano.

Is phenomenology nothing else than descriptive psychology? In the first edition of his Logical Investigations (LI), Husserl conceived of phenomenology as a description and analysis of the experiences of knowledge, unequivocally stating that “phenomenology is descriptive psychology.” Most interestingly, although the first edition of the LI was the reference par excellence in phenomenology for the Munich phenomenologists, they remained suspicious of this characterisation of phenomenology. The aim of this paper is to shed new light on the reception of descriptive psychology among Munich phenomenologists and, at the same time, to offer a re-evaluation of their understanding of realist phenomenology.

Although Wilhelm Dilthey and Franz Brentano apparently were pursuing roughly the same objective —to offer a description of our mental functions and of their relations to objects— and both called their respective research programs ‘descriptive psychology’, they seem to have used the term to refer to two different methods of psychological research. In this article, I compare analyses of these differences. Against the reading of Orth but also against a possible application of recent relativist accounts of the epistemology of peer disagreement to this case, I argue that their apparent shared objective is not enough to support an understanding of their views as two alternatives within a given historical or scientific context, or as a mutual peer disagreement. I show that the impression of a shared objective can be explained away as stemming from the influence of their teacher Adolf Trendelenburg, and I stress that the case of introspection strongly suggests that an account in terms of peer disagreement is not plausible. Finally, I conclude that the opposition between two traditions, Austrian philosophy and historicism, might be better suited to account for the dispute and its apparent common historical context.

The text analyses the psychological aspects of “phantasy presentation” in Brentano’s lecture Ausgewählte Fragen aus Psychologie und Ästhetik dated 1885/1886. It focuses primarily on two major aspects of Brentano’s work: (1) the traditional understanding of phantasy presentation as intuitive presentation, and as fundamentally related to the perceptual presentation; (2) Brentano’s conception according to which phantasy presentations are “concepts with intuitive core”. In this context, the text focuses on the following topics: the relation between the inauthentic presentations of the phantasy and perceptual presentations; the relation between presentations with attributive unity and surrogate presentations in logic; and the relation between the intuitive and conceptual element in the constitution of phantasy presentations. The study argues that, despite the title of the lecture – Ausgewählte Fragen aus Psychologie und Ästhetik – Brentano’s analysis of phantasy presentation does not refer to the aesthetic function, but to the psychological function of this presentation. Furthermore, it argues that the psychological aspect of phantasy presentation represents one of the main aspects of Brentano’s work, subsequently used by Husserl in his studies to underline the differences between the perceptual and phantasy presentation.

Descriptive psychology had a tremendous influence on Brentano’s students and was soon to be identified by early 20th-century psychologists like Bühler as the most important contribution to psychology of the School of Brentano. In the following paper, I am interested in the reception of the methodology of descriptive psychology, and more precisely in the third step of descriptive analysis, namely interpretation (Deutung). I suggest that the meaning of interpretation as a descriptive category undergoes important changes from Brentano to Bühler. First, I show that Brentano’s understanding of interpretation relies much on the writings of 19th-century British philosophers like Mill, Bain and Whewell. Following Mill, Brentano sees interpretation as a constitutive part of the description. According to him, this step of the analysis corresponds to the second class of mental phenomena: judgments. Second, I show how Marty integrated Brentano’s basic theory of interpretation in his theory of meaning, especially concerning the distinction between intended and non-intended manifestation (Kundgabe). Finally, I argue that this conception of the role and nature of interpretation in descriptive psychology was one of the reasons why Bühler rejected Marty’s conception of manifestation.

While there can be no doubt that philosophy and psychiatry are different fields of inquiry, there can also exist little doubt that there is a growing interest in philosophical issues in psychiatry.l How are these two fields related? How are we to appreciate both their differences and their common ground? What can psychiatry expect from philosophy, and vice versa? In this paper we will focus on phenomenology, which for several reasons remains at the heart of the questions just posed. We will do so by addressing the similarities and differences of the meaning of the term "phenomenology" as used in psychiatry and philosophy. Our focus on phenomenology should not obscure, however, our firm conviction that psychiatry must employ a variety of methods, concepts, and theories in order to illuminate and treat mental disorders.

The article explores psychological motives in Leopold Blaustein’s philosophy. Blaustein was educated in Lvov, Freiburg im Breisgau and Berlin. In his original explorations, he attempted to connect a phenomenological perspective with descriptive psychology. As trained by Twardowski, he took over some motives of understanding the method of philosophy (psychology), its objectives and aims. The author situates Blaustein also in a dialogue with Stumpf and next to the context of Dilthey’s humanistic psychology is examined. Finally, the article explores the influences of Gestalt psychology on Blaustein. The ultimate thesis of the article is that Blaustein’s method can be grasped as a
phenomenologically oriented descriptive psychology.

Vortrag im Auftaktsworkshop 'Traditionslinie der Phänomenologie' der Tagung 'Die Phänomenologie und das Politische', veranstaltet durch die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Phänomenologische Forschung (Mi, 13. September 2017)

Dieser Vortrag befasst sich mit dem theoretischen und methodologischen Verhältnis zwischen Husserl und Brentano in der 1. Auflage der Logischen Untersuchungen. Bereits die wohlbekannte Tatsache, dass Husserl in der Einleitung seines Durchbruchswerkes für die Phänomenologie als eine deskriptive Psychologie argumentiert, zeigt die Relevanz des Brentanoschen Verfahrens für die Entwicklung seines Denkens. Seine Argumentation deutet hier aber auch schon entscheidende systematische Abweichungen an, denn Husserl behauptet, dass seine Auffassung der deskriptiven Psychologie nicht mit einer anderen Auffassung, die sich auf die innere Wahrnehmung als methodologische Grundlage stützt, gleichzusetzen sei. Dadurch spricht Husserl den Kern des psychologischen Verfahrens Brentanos an, der sich mit der Erforschung der psychischen Phänomene, ihrer verschiedenen Komplexionen und Gesetzlichkeiten ausgerechnet mittels einer inneren Wahrnehmung befasst.

Diese anfängliche Darstellung des Husserlschen Ansatzes, die in der oben erwähnten Einleitung zu finden ist, hat jedoch schon viele Gemeinsamkeiten mit dem Ansatz Brentanos - bspw. die widernatürliche Betrachtung der psychischen Akte zum Nachteil der von ihnen implizierten gegenständlichen Korrelate, und der theoretische Vorrang der Deskription vor der kausalen Erklärung. - Eine partielle Anlehnung an Brentano und die Annahme einiger seiner philosophischen Motive sind somit hier schon zu konstatieren. Aber die Ablehnung Brentanos wichtigster methodologischer Herangehensweise zur Erforschung des Bewusstseins lässt vermuten, dass die deskriptive psychologische Begrifflichkeit - die genau durch so eine Herangehensweise eingeführt, verdeutlicht und begründet wird - nicht anzunehmen ist. Wie wäre es sonst möglich, ein bestimmtes Verfahren abzulehnen und trotzdem einige seiner theoretischen Ergebnisse für gültig zu halten? Dies ist genau die entscheidende Frage, was die systematische Auseinandersetzung Husserls mit Brentano anbelangt, da Husserl sich doch auf viele theoretische Beiträge Brentanos stützt und sie nutzt, um seine eigene Thesen aufzustellen. Das bekannteste Beispiel dazu ist die radikale Umdeutung des Begriffs ‘intentionale Beziehung’ in der 5. Logischen Untersuchung. - Aber dazu kommen noch viele weitere, wie die Betrachtung mereologischer Ansätze Brentanos in der 3. Untersuchung und die Kritik seiner Lehre der inneren und äußeren Wahrnehmung und der ihnen zugrundeliegenden psychischen und physischen Phänomene in der Beilage zur 6. Untersuchung. Die Kriterien, an denen sich Husserl in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Brentano orientiert, sind somit klärungsbedürftig.

Um dieser Problematik nachzugehen, wird in diesem Vortrag zunächst der entscheidende methodologische Streitpunkt zwischen beiden Philosophen behandelt, nämlich die Husserlsche Kritik der Brentanoschen Wahrnehmungslehre, welche die innere Wahrnehmung für die einzige legitime Quelle anschaulicher, evidenter Erkenntnis der immanenten Bestände des Psychischen hält. Nachdem Husserls Interpretationsansätzen klargestellt werden, wird anschließend gezeigt, wie seines Erachtens das Brentanosche Verfahren zu umgehen ist, aber trotzdem doch zu Ergebnissen führen kann, die - wie es im Schlussteil des Vortrags dargestellt wird - tatsächlich als phänomenologische Befunde zählen können.

Ce deuxieme et dernier tome des Essais et conferences de Franz Brentano comporte dix-neuf textes qui, pour la plupart, paraissent pour la premiere fois en traduction francaise. Précédés d'une introduction sur les principes et la structure de la philosophie de Brentano, ils sont regroupés en fonction de leur position dans l'une des deux branches-mères de la philosophie théorique de Brentano, a savoir la métaphysique et la psychologie, ou dans l'une des trois branches pratiques de cette dernière, a savoir la logique, l'éthique et l'esthétique. Les textes sur la metaphysique portent sur la position de cette derniere par rapport aux sciences naturelles, tandis que les textes en psychologie sont principalement des recherches individuelles en psychologie des sens developpées du point de vue de la psychologie descriptive. Les textes sur la logique, l'éthique et l'esthétique proposent non seulement des applications de la psychologie descriptive au domaine du jugement, de la connaissance morale et des émotions déclenchées par les représentations du beau, mais aussi des développements de la psychologie génétique dans le domaine de l'esthétique ainsi que des réflexions politiques et sociales du point de vue descriptif.

Die 3. Logische Untersuchung ist eine der wichtigsten Untersuchungen, um die systematische Auseinandersetzung Husserls mit der Brentano Schule in Betracht zu ziehen. Dabei findet der Leser z.B. eine intensive Beschäftigung Husserls mit der Sinnespsychologie Carl Stumpfs, die ihm begriffliche Anhaltspunkte gibt, um zentrale Aspekte seiner eigenen Argumentation zu entwickeln - wie seine Auffassung der selbständigen und unselbständigen Inhalte oder der Verschmelzungsphänomene. Dabei findet der Leser auch deutliche Hinweise auf Christian von Ehrenfels und Alexius Meinong, wenn es um die Beschreibung der figuralen Momente geht, die Husserl selbst mit den Begriffen ‘Gestaltqualität’ des ersteren Autors und ‘fundierter Inhalt’ des letzteren identifiziert. Die Tatsache, dass diese drei Mitglieder der Brentano Schule als wichtige Gesprächspartner Husserls bei der Entwicklung seiner mereologischen Ansätzen zählen, wird nicht in Frage gestellt, sondern eben zum Thema wichtiger Forschungen gemacht. Aber was Brentano selbst angeht, ist die Sache nicht so deutlich.

Dieser Philosoph wird nicht häufig erwähnt, und es gibt Textstellen, in denen seine Thesen doch angesprochen werden, aber trotz ihrer systematischen Bedeutung in der jeweiligen Argumentation, werden sie nicht so nah betrachtet. An anderen Textstellen beschäftigt sich Husserl mit sehr ähnlichen Problemen, wenn nicht mit denselben, die schon im Werke Brentanos eingeführt wurden, und löst sie auf eine eigene, aber auch sehr ähnliche Weise wie Brentano selbst sie früher gelöst hat. Und dort findet man auch keine Hinweise Husserls auf seine Beiträge, so dass der Leser, der mit beiden Werken vertraut ist, den Eindruck hat, dass es sich bei solchen Fällen etwa um eine Art verborgener systematischen Beziehung zwischen beiden Philosophen handelt, die nicht so leicht zu erfassen ist, aber die zum Verständnis der Probleme des Husserlschen Textes wichtig ist. Ziel dieses Vortrags ist, eine dieser Textstellen hervorzuheben und zu interpretieren, wo sich Husserl mit der elementaristischen Auffassung der Teil-Ganzes-Beziehung befasst und sie auf eine Weise analysiert, die strukturell der Herangehensweise Brentanos an dasselbe Thema in seinen Vorlesungen über Deskriptive Psychologie von 1890-1891 sehr ähnlich ist. Die Tragweite dieser systematischen Auseinandersetzung zeigt sich umso deutlicher, wenn wir auch in Erwägung ziehen: (i) dass sich alle weiteren Erwähnungen von Brentano in der 3. Untersuchung auf Thesen beziehen, die in diesen Vorlesungen vertreten werden; und (ii) dass Brentano in einem Brief von 1891 an Husserl auf die Möglichkeit hinweist, ihm in seinen Wiener Reisen die letzteren Fortschritte der psychognostischen Untersuchungen beizubringen, nach denen sich er ‘so teilnehmend erkundigt’ hätte. 

Um die systematischen Gemeinsamkeiten der Herangehensweisen Husserls und Brentanos an die elementaristische Auffassung der Ganzes-Teil-Beziehungen zu analysieren, werde ich diesen Vortrag in vier Teilen gliedern: (i) im ersten Teil, der in eine Art Vorarbeit besteht, werde ich mich mit einigen begrifflichen Bestimmungen der Husserlschen Mereologie befassen, die seiner Herangehensweise zugrundeliegen, und zwar die Bestimmungen der Begriffe ‘Fundierung,’ ‘Ganzes’ und ‘Teil’; (ii) im zweiten Teil werde ich Husserls Interpretation der elementaristischen Auffassung und seine Argumente gegen diese Theorie thematisieren, so dass es verständlich wird, warum sie mit der im ersten Teil betrachtenen Begrifflichkeit inkompatibel ist; (iii) im dritten Teil werde ich die Brentanosche Herangehensweise an dasselbe Problem und seinen Lösungsversuch beschreiben; und (iv) im vierten und letzteren Teil werde ich die Gemeinsamkeiten beider Standpunkte erwägen und daraus die entsprechenden Schlüsse ziehen.

This paper presents a critique of cognitive psychology’s micro-process program, as well as suggestions for a more scientifically and pragmatically viable approach to cognition.  The paper proceeds in the following sequence.  First, the mainstream point of view of contemporary cognitive psychology regarding putative “underlying,” “unconscious,” and in principle unobservable cognitive micro-processes is summarized.  Second, this view is criticized.  Third and finally, cognitive science’s neuropsychology program is discussed, not with respect to the considerable value of what it has and undoubtedly will discover in the future, but with respect to the interpretation that would appropriately be placed on its findings.  Throughout this discussion, an alternative position is advanced--namely, that cognitive processes are best viewed, on both scientific and pragmatic grounds, as private or mental versions of well-understood human social practices.

Vortrag im Philosophischen Seminar der Universität Göttingen (Do, 21. Dezember 2017)

In diesem Vortrag behandle ich Husserls Kritik an Brentanos Lehre der inneren Wahrnehmung in der 1. Auflage der Logischen Untersuchungen. Den Ausgangspunkt zur Analyse dieser Problematik bietet schon die Definition der Phänomenologie im §6 der Einleitung in die Untersuchungen. Die begrifflich wichtigsten Argumentationslinien Husserls sind aber erst im §5 der 5.LU zu finden, und zwar in der Form von zwei Argumenten: (i) das erstere bezieht sich auf die Gefahr, dass man bei der Definition der inneren Wahrnehmung in einen unendlichen Regress gerät, und auch auf die Art und Weise, wie Brentano es vermeiden will; (ii) das letztere richtet sich auf die These, dass die innere Wahrnehmung immer den Charakter der Evidenz hat, d.h. den Charakter einer adäquaten Wahrnehmung. Ungeachtet der Wichtigkeit dieser Argumentationslinien sind Husserls Erläuterungen dazu im erwähnten Paragraph eher knapp und tragen nicht so viel zu einer passenden Verdeutlichung ihres theoretischen Gehalts bei. Wichtig ist somit die systematischen Ansätzen, die bei dieser Verdeutlichung maßgeblich helfen können und die in den ganzen LU verstreut sind, hervorzuheben und kritisch auszulegen. Anhand der Analyse der Beilage zu den LU und einigen Paragraphen der 2., 5. und 6. Untersuchungen habe ich als Ziel, ein vollkommeneres Bild der Husserlschen Kritik darzustellen und sowohl die Punkte, wo er sich von Brentano entfernt, als auch diejenigen, wo er etwas von seinen Thesen übernimmt, explizit zu machen.

O livro Psicologia e ética: o desenvolvimento da filosofia do psíquico de Franz Brentano é o resultado de uma minuciosa pesquisa de doutorado. Pioneira em língua portuguesa, essa pesquisa inaugurou os estudos sobre a ética da preferência, a qual foi desenvolvida pelo filósofo alemão Franz Brentano (1838-1917) por meio de sua filosofia do psíquico. Não se trata, apenas, de mais uma discussão sobre os princípios que determinam a ação de modo problemático, assertórico ou categórico. Para além dos fundamentos que instituem a clássica oposição entre a ética deontológica e a ética utilitarista, a ética brentaniana da preferência fundou uma perspectiva meta-ética de análise e, em função dessa nova perspectiva, propôs a superação das teorias éticas baseadas no sentimento moral por uma teoria ética baseada no conhecimento moral. As investigações realizadas pelo pesquisador Evandro O. Brito explicitam, não apenas a estrutura dessa ética cognitiva baseada na descrição brentaniana dos atos psíquicos preferência, mas também apresentam as mudanças e os aprimoramentos fundamentais realizados por Franz Brentano em sua filosofia do psíquico, com o propósito de garantir a plausibilidade de sua teoria. Trata-se, portanto, de uma publicação que preenche uma lacuna dos estudos sobre ética em língua portuguesa. Pois, como afirmou o filósofo inglês George Moore, “esta (a teoria ética de Franz Brentano) é de longe a melhor discussão acerca dos princípios mais fundamentais da ética do que qualquer outra que eu já conheci. O próprio Brentano está plenamente consciente de que fez um grande avanço na teoria da Ética (...) e sua convicção tanto na originalidade, como no valor do seu próprio trabalho, está completamente justificada” (1903, p. 115).

The Logical Investigations, Edmund Husserl’s Hauptwek, marks the real ‘breakthrough’ to the descriptive, neutral, non-reductive science of phenomenology (the careful description of what appears to consciousness precisely in the manner of its appearing). Even though Husserl acknowledged the importance and the force of the central tenets of Franz Brentano’s psychological investigations, he will argue against his former mentor’s ambiguities. This essay is a modest attempt to reconstruct Husserl’s way out of his Brentanian beginnings towards the many-layered phenomenological project of the Logical Investigations.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of truth formulated by Franz Brentano in 1889. As a textual basis, I take Brentano's communication, presented to the philosophical community of Vienna in March 1889, entitled " On the concept of truth " (Über den Begriff der Wahrheit), and I provide a systematic exposition of Brentano's analysis of the problems surrounding the interpretation of the Aristotelian concept of truth as correspondence. My analysis explains how Brentano reinter-preted the Aristotelian concept of truth as correspondence within the conceptual framework of his descriptive psychology.
