College Counseling

As more students identify as transgender and genderqueer, it is essential that staff at college counseling centers are knowledgeable about gender diversity. This article provides a template for intake and initial assessment with transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, and gender nonconforming students. It familiarizes clinicians with gender-affirming language and offers a list of questions to ask. Topics covered include: gender history, coming out, self-injury, suicide, sexual orientation, binding, transition trajectories, options for gender expression, issues with diagnosis and recordkeeping, and interdisciplinary approaches to treatment. The intake is an opportunity to provide comfort and support for students of all genders.

Mental health issues are on the rise on college campuses (Gallagher & American College Counseling Association, [ACCA], 2014). Residence life professionals are often first responders to these issues. College counselors are in a unique position to support these professionals by (a) preparing the residence environment, (b) planning and providing programming on mental health issues, (c) using basic crisis skills, and (d) making referrals. This paper will provide college counselors with the rationale, benefits, and processes for supporting residence life professionals to be mental health first responders. Preparing Mental Health First Responders: College Counselors Supporting Residence Life Professionals As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, the prevalence and severity of mental health issues among college students continues to escalate (Gallagher & American College Counseling Association, [ACCA], 2014). These mental health issues frequently come to the attention of residence life professionals (i.e., resident assistants, resident directors), who are often advised of a resident's mental health issues either via self-report or by a concerned roommate or friend. Furthermore, because these residence life professionals are not licensed mental health professionals, college counselors may be able to facilitate education, information, and instruction; specifically, the knowledge of how to identify and respond to mental health issues and situations in residence halls. This collaboration between college counselors and residence life professionals may provide an adequate and prudent response to the escalating mental health crisis on college campuses. While 37.1% of college and university students currently live in campus residence halls (American College Health Association, 2016), an anticipated increase in enrollment is expected to rise by 14% by 2025 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016). In addition, residence life professionals are expected to manage a college population characterized by approximately three in every eight college students reporting feeling depressed indicated by difficulty functioning at some time over the past year (American College Health Association [ACHA],

Bu araştırmada üniversite öğrencilerinin romantik ilişkilerde mükemmeliyetçilik ve güven düzeyinin ilişki doyum
düzeyini yordayıcı rolü incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını hali hazırda romantik bir ilişki içinde olan 325
üniversite öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Veriler İlişki Doyum Ölçeği, Romantik İlişkilerde Mükemmeliyetçilik Ölçeği,
İkili İlişkilerde Güven Ölçeği ve kişisel bilgi formu aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Analizlerde aritmetik ortalama, Pearson
korelasyonu ve çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgulara göre, ilişki doyumu ile kendine
yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik ve ikili ilişkilerde güven arasında pozitif yönde; diğerlerine yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik
arasında ise negatif yönde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde ilişki vardır. Çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi
sonuçlarına göre; kendine yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik, diğerlerine yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik ve ikili ilişkilerde
güven ilişki doyum düzeyindeki değişimin %33.3’ünü açıklamaktadır. Kendine yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik ve ikili
ilişkilerde güven düzeyinde meydana gelen artış ilişki doyum düzeyinin artmasına katkı sağlarken; diğerlerine
yönelik mükemmeliyetçilik düzeyinde meydana gelen artış ilişki doyum düzeyinin azalmasına yol açmaktadır. Elde
edilen bulgular ilgili literatür ışığında tartışılarak öneriler sunulmuştur.

How do educators reconcile the growing college-for-all norm—the notion that all students should pursue college—with the diverse needs of students in urban settings? What is the impact on Black students across social-class background? Using interviews and fieldwork with teachers, counselors, and diverse Black students in a large Californian high school, I examine college-counseling norms under a social capital framework. With high caseloads, I find that educators support mass outreach and vague encouragements for 4-year colleges. Ultimately, my findings problematize one-size-fits-all counseling norms and highlight the need for more targeted counseling for urban and working-class Black students.

In this study, we examined psychotherapy utilization, presenting concerns, reported distress levels, and psychotherapy outcomes among Polynesian American students presenting for services at a counseling center. We collected data at intake, during therapy sessions, and at termination for 415 Polynesian American and 18,117 European American students over a 17-year period. Polynesian American students were equally likely to utilize counseling services as European American students but were more likely to drop out earlier. At intake, these students reported higher numbers of presenting concerns and greater levels of emotional and psychological distress than European American students. Polynesian American students reported significantly higher scores on racial discrimination, physical abuse, and family dependence. Implications for counseling center programs and services are discussed.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, akademisyenlerin ve üniversite öğrencilerinin yükseköğretimde psikolojik danışma birimine dair görüşlerini incelemektir. Araştırmaya yedi akademisyen ve 40 lisans öğrencisi dâhil edilmiştir. Katılımcıların görüşleri, akademisyen ve öğrenciler için ayrı olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Veriler, sırasıyla dört ve yedi açık uçlu soru içeren iki yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları, öğrenci ve akademisyenlerin üniversite bünyesinde bir psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik biriminin hizmet vermediğini düşündüklerini ya da bu konuda bir fikirleri olmadığını göstermektedir. Akademisyenlere göre öğrenciler en çok romantik ilişkiler, ailevi sorunlar ve mesleki konularda yardıma gereksinim duymaktadır. Öğrencilerin görüşlerine göre ise, en çok sınav kaygısı ve kişisel problemler konusunda psikolojik yardım aranmaktadır. Akademisyenler, çoğunlukla öğrencilerle doğru iletişim kurma becerileri ve öğrencileri psikolojik hizmet verecek birimlere yönlendirme konusunda yardım aramaktadır. Öğrenciler, psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmeti veren bir birimin okudukları fakülte içerisinde veya kolaylıkla ulaşabilecekleri bir konumda bulunmasını tercih etmektedir. Öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğu böyle bir birim bulunsaydı başvuracağını ve psikolojik hizmetlere düzenli zaman ayırabileceğini belirtmiştir. Katılımcı öğrenciler, böyle bir merkeze en çok kariyer danışmanlığı ve sınav kaygısı ile düzenli ders çalışma konularında başvuracaklarını belirtmiştir. Öğrenciler büyük oranda bireysel psikolojik yardımı almayı tercih ederken, bunu ikinci sırada grupla psikolojik danışma izlemektedir.

The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the current status of historically marginalized student populations’ understanding of college access and how college counselors can better facilitate the college-going process for these student groups. For the purposes of this chapter, marginalized student populations include an emphasis on underrepresented groups based on race and ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. The chapter builds on current research and practice efforts, but stresses the need for college counselors to challenge traditional strategies in order to engage and support male high school student through examples and solutions. Lastly, the chapter focuses on emerging populations that need additional support from college counselors to get to and through college.

ABSTRACT A pilot study examining holistic wellness factors and drinking behaviors among undergraduate students revealed several significant relationships. Two second-order wellness factors of the Indivisible Self model of wellness—Coping Self and Essential Self—were negatively associated with both alcohol use intensity and drinking consequences. Implications for college counselors and for further research are considered.
