The paper investigates different constructions of space in Christoph Schlingensief’s theatrical work, exploring connections with Frederick Kiesler’s thoughts on theatre, space and movement. It considers Kiesler’s most important conceptions, including the Raumbühne (1924), his vision of the Endless House, the Universal, and his theory of ‚Correalism‘. Against this background, the paper describes Schlingensief’s spatial arrangements as flowing spaces which connect architectural and cinematic modes of perception.

Das Auftreten behinderter Schauspieler auf der Bühne zählt zu den ästhetischen Tendenzen des postdramatischen Theaters und deren damit verbundenen Kritik am Repräsentationstheater. Die physische Bühnenpräsenz eines „devianten“ Körpers, der „durch Krankheit, Behinderung, Entstellung von der Norm abweicht“ und normalerweise „›unmoralische‹ Faszination, Unbehagen oder Angst auslöst“, bietet dem Gegenwartstheater die Möglichkeit, sowohl die ästhetischen Mittel und die Politik der Institution des Theaters kritisch zu überdenken als auch den Fiktionalisierungs- und Konstruktionsvorgang „jener gewissen“ Wirklichkeit bzw. präsumierten Normalität zu beobachten, denn „die postdramatischen Theatertexte und Aufführungen schaffen einen Erkenntnisraum, der den Zuschauern die soziokulturelle Konstruktion gesellschaftlicher Normen sowie deren psychische Verankerung und körperliche Manifestation im Subjekt bewusst macht“. Unter diesen Umständen erweisen sich die Theaterproduktionen Christoph Schlingensiefs, Jérôme Bels und seit 2017 auch Milo Raus als brisante Beispiele vom Theaterarbeiten mit körperlich und geistig behinderten Schauspielern.

Contrasting and comparing with acting theories from Stanislavski’s to Michael Kirby’s, the chapter shows why Schlingensief’s ideal of seemingly unprofessional and unpredictable acting style can still be called realist. Behind Schlingensief’s work with actors lie both a critique of institutionalized practices, as well as a resistance to trade in essentialisms about human nature. The chapter then analyzes Schlingensief’s project with a large cast of people with disabilities, Freakstars 3000, a detournement of reality-TV singing competitions in the vein of American Idol. The project encompassed under the same name the stage performance at the Volksbühne, the mini TV series airing on VIVA music channel in 2002, and eventually the documentary released in 2003 under Schlingensief’s direction. By acknowledging the Freakstars 3000’s collaborators as actors, the project unfolds not just as a show lobbying for disability rights, but as a project about actor training and professionalized work standards, about acting itself, on stage and off.

This paper explores the attempts of the political activist group Centre
for Political Beauty to restore beauty to politics. While the Centre
for Political Beauty claims that their performances can be traced back
to the multimedia artist Christoph Schlingensief, my contention is
that their self-understanding as artists is problematic. By approaching
selected interventions against the backdrop of their respective
contexts in the history of the avant-garde, I develop criteria facilitating
a differentiation between protest art and political activism. I posit
that protest art, in contrast to political activism, need not be driven
by a goal-oriented artistic intention, and must possess openness as
a strategy. Rather than aiming at a direct pedagogical or educational
effect on the audience, protest art desires to open up a dialogue between
the artwork and the audience. The way in which shame operates
in the interventions of the Centre for Political Beauty calls into
question whether their interventions actually allow for the open and
dialogical engagement that is promoted by protest art.

2021 feiert der „Hörspielpreis der Kriegsblinden“ sein 70-jähriges Jubiläum. 70 Jurysitzungen und Preisentscheidungen, 70 ‚Jahrgänge‘ des Hörspielangebots der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, seit einigen Jahren ergänzt um die des Österreichischen und des deutschsprachigen Schweizer Rundfunks. Die Berichte der Jurorinnen und Juroren, die in der Fachpresse wie der „Funk-Korrespondenz“ (mittlerweile: „Medien-Korrespondenz“) und „Kirche und Rundfunk“ (mittlerweile „epd medien“) oder in größeren Tageszeitungen erschienen sind, stellen die Preisträger*innen vor, würdigen die gekürten Produktionen und berichten von der jeweiligen Jurysitzung und den dort geführten Diskussionen. – Für alle, die die Geschichte des deutschen Hörspiels rekapitulieren, können solche Berichte aufschlussreiche Dokumente sein.
Seit 1996 gehöre ich – mit Unterbrechungen – der Jury des Hörspielpreises der Kriegsblinden an; seit 25 Jahren berichte ich – mit entsprechenden Ausnahmen – in der Köln-Bonner Fachzeitschrift über das, was die Kolleg*innen und ich diskutiert haben, welche Entscheidungen ich mitgetragen habe und welche Entscheidungen ich mittragen musste, obwohl das eigene Votum einem anderen Hörspiel gegolten hatte und ich dem/der einen oder anderen Autor*in den renommierten Preis gern zuerkannt hätte.
Da diese Texte nicht immer leicht und schnell zur Verfügung stehen, versammele ich nachfolgend alle meine Berichte, die ich zwischen 1996 und 2020 verfasst habe, und stelle sie nach Rücksprache mit der „Medien-Korrespondenz“ hier online.
Zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung steht die ‚Sichtung‘ des 2020er ‚Jahrgangs‘ an; im Mai 2021 wird die Jury tagen, Corona-bedingt zum zweiten Mal virtuell. Der Bericht über diese Jurysitzung und seine Entscheidung wird also demnächst folgen.

Nach Hans-Thies Lehmann kann postdramatisches Theater als eine Konzeptualisierung von Kunst nicht als Repräsentation, sondern als Erfahrung des Realen (Zeit, Raum, Körper) verstanden werden (Lehmann: Postdramatisches Theater, 1999, S. 241ff). Außerdem weisen die Körperzentriertheit und die performativen Verflechtungen von Ritual-(Theater)Kunst-Realität in postdramatischen Formen stark auf ältere bzw. außereuropäische performative/rituelle Theaterformen hin. In diesem Zusammenhang schlägt Lehmann in Pia Janke / Teresa Kovacs (Hg.): „Postdramatik“. Reflexion und Revision eine „stärker transkulturell orientierte Betrachtungsweise“ vor. Er betont, dass „das dramatische Theater Europas eine Sonderentwicklung“ sei, weshalb ihm „die Relativierung des spezifisch europäischen Theatermodells durch transkulturell orientierte Forschung überaus wichtig“ erscheine (Janke / Kovacs, 2015, S. 45). Die Tagung eruiert die ästhetische und wissenschaftliche Reichweite dieser Sachlage.

Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) war ein Künstler, der am Puls der politischen, gesell-schaftlichen und medialen Entwicklungen arbeitete, mit seinen Aktionen und Projekten kon-ventionalisierte Wahrnehmungsmuster unterlief und herkömmliche Theaterformen sprengte.
Die Buchpublikation ist die erste umfassende wissenschaftliche Darstellung der Arbeiten des „Gesamtkünstlers“ Christoph Schlingensief. SpezialistInnen aus den Bereichen der Theater-, Literatur-, Musik-, Film-, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaft sowie JournalistInnen und Theater-leute analysieren Schlingensiefs künstlerischen Anspruch und theatrale Ästhetik.
Die Form von Schlingensiefs Arbeiten wird ebenso diskutiert wie die Neuerungen in Bezug auf die Verhältnisse von Fiktion und Realität, von Kunst und Leben, von Bühne und öffentli-chem Raum. Die Beiträge und Gespräche widmen sich der Prozesshaftigkeit von Schlingen-siefs Projekten, seiner spezifischen Arbeitsweise sowie der Vernetzung der Künste und den dadurch entstehenden medialen Verdichtungen und Kollisionen. Auch Schlingensiefs Strate-gien, latente gesellschaftliche Konflikte zum Vorschein zu bringen, sowie die Mechanismen der öffentlichen Erregungen werden untersucht.
Schlingensiefs Arbeiten werden dabei in einen größeren Kunst-Kontext gestellt, in die Tradi-tion der Avantgarden des 20. Jahrhunderts von der Dada-Bewegung über Strömungen wie Fluxus, Happening, Aktionskunst bis hin zum Gesamtkunst-Konzept von Joseph Beuys.
Ein wichtiger Aspekt ist auch Schlingensiefs Zusammenarbeit mit Elfriede Jelinek.

Marc James Léger’s 2012 book, Brave New Avant Garde, is a timely attempt to rethink avant-gardism within the context of today’s resurgence of ‘socially engaged’, ‘activist’ and ‘interventionist’ art. Léger criticises these currents of practice as little more than a ‘capitalist demand’ and a betrayal of class struggle, arguing instead for ‘sinthomeopathic’ practices that over-identify with neoliberal ideology, as a means to foster the alienation of art’s audiences as a spur to ‘critical activity’. Situating Léger’s work in relation to the established discourse on avant-gardism as well as significant recent entries in the debate on artistic activism, this review essay identifies the contradictions of Léger’s critique and argues against his dismissal of socially engaged art. The review proposes instead that forms of participatory, collaborative and collectivist practice will, in some form, continue to perform a critical function within capitalist society, as a vital channel for the rethinking of art’s cultural form.

Das Operndorf Afrika ist zehn Jahre alt geworden. Was ist aus Schlingensiefs Vision, ein Operndorf im westafrikanischen Burkina Faso zu gründen, geworden? Werden dreißig Kilometer außerhalb der burkinischen Hauptstadt Ouagadougou nun Wagner-Opern inszeniert? Oder verwandelt sich das Operndorf in eine Dystopie der klassischen Entwicklungshilfe, die neo-koloniale Machtverhältnisse fortschreibt? Inspiriert von diesen und ähnlichen Fragen ist dieses Buch. Beabsichtigt ist es dabei weniger konkrete Antworten zu geben als eine Diskussion anzuregen. Ganz im Sinne Schlingensiefs, dessen Werk doch vor allem eins war: eine Oper der Ambiguitäten.

Wenn Arbeitslose und Migrantenkinder, behinderte, straffällige oder todkranke Menschen auf der Bühne nicht mehr von Schauspielern dargestellt werden, sondern als sie selbst auftreten, wird ein politischer Anspruch geltend gemacht, der darauf zielt, die antike Idee des Theaters als Raum des Öffentlichen postdramatisch wiederzubeleben. Das ambivalente Versprechen eines solchen Theaters ist das einer sozialen Heterotopie, eines anderen Raumes der Gesellschaft, in dem soziale Grenzen und Normen, Fragen der In- und Exklusion sowie der Gemeinschaftskonstitution ästhetisch verhandelt werden. Das Buch setzt sich mit Arbeiten von Künstlern wie Christoph Schlingensief, Rimini Protokoll, Volker Lösch, Romeo Castellucci und Ligna auseinander und bezieht diese auf Überlegungen Jacques Rancières, Giorgio Agambens oder Jean-Luc Nancys. Es geht nicht zuletzt um ein räumliches Denken des Politischen.

The chapter discusses Schlingensief’s Animatographs, which were large structures built on big revolving platforms and stuffed with objects and audio-video materials. In concept and execution, the Animatographs harkened back to early cinematic devices (such as panoramas) and to old practices in realist scenography as employed by the likes of Ibsen and Brecht. The three major Animatograph projects taking place in 2005—the Icelandic “House of Obsessions,” the German “Odin’s Parsipark” in Neuhardenberg, and the “Area 7” outside Lüderitz, Namibia—placed the carousel constructions in the center of experiential ecosystems involving performances, street actions, and film shooting. An Animatograph construction absorbed influences and materials from its surroundings, evoked art histories and local histories, and invited spectators to walk freely within its bowels. With the help of Walter Benjamin’s ideas of imagistic critique, the chapter argues that the Animatographs articulated a political message with dogged insistence, despite the absence of narratives communicated in conceptual terms.

Schlingensief lost himself in a growing obsession with Richard Wagner over the course of staging the opera Parsifal at Bayreuth in 2004. Schlingensief used Wagner as a metonymic key for understanding current political realities and for analyzing what happens to theater posing as politics. With Parsifal, Schlingensief worked through his own anxieties related to being a white, male, German politicized artist. The chapter compares The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross’ scathing review of Parsifal as vomit-inducing with Nietzsche’s accusations leveled against Wagner, and sees in the aversion to Schlingensief’s Parsifal a legitimate concern over the staging’s nauseating overabundance of meaning. Schlingensief’s Parsifal unfolded like a moving revue of cluttered props and set pieces doused in projections and spinning on a giant turntable. It was unwilling to take one particular, discernible stand as it touched on many issues briefly and in passing, albeit repetitively and incessantly: war, religion, colonialism, terror, racism, xenophobia, misogyny.

In Ancient Greece the Cynics based their philosophy on concepts of freedom, self-sufficiency and independence, practicing 'parrhesia', the act of speaking freely, even if it posed great personal risk. This paper looks at artistic practices that follow this ethos, and how artists might influence politics and society in doing so.

Schlingensief’s 2001 Hamlet production at Schauspielhaus Zürich copied Gustaf Gründgens’ 1963 Hamlet staging, as well as Gründgens’ own acting mannerisms when playing Hamlet in a 1936 Third Reich production. Schlingensief punctured the detournement by letting a contingent of six recanted neo-nazis infiltrate the staging. The transmedially-conceived Hamlet Nazi-Line project included a wide range of events, from street actions and press talks to founding a support organization for neo-nazis who wanted to exit the movement. The chapter explains the project’s investment in a critique of the relationship between fascism and post-nazism Europe, and the responsibilities and liabilities of artistic institutions vis-à-vis political regimes. Hamlet Nazi-Line interrogated the collusions between high-art and base politics, and dispraised post-reunification politics of memory. Schlingensief saw how the nazi-hype can be a lucrative business, commercially, artistically, and politically. According to Schlingensief, neo-nazism is not an extremist appendage to a tolerant mainstream society, but a tackier expression of piled-up violence that continues to accumulate, as evidenced by the wide support given to ultra-nationalist parties.

In Rosebud, a stage play that premiered in 2001 at the Berlin Volksbühne, Schlingensief criticized liberal politics and the theater institution. The production freely copied from Ibsen’s Rosmersholm, Peter Zadek’s 2000 Rosmersholm staging at the Akademietheater Vienna, and from a plethora of other artistic references. The chapter first reads Rosmersholm with Jürgen Habermas’ help to articulate Ibsen’s concern with the theatricalization of the public sphere, a theme picked up by Schlingensief. It then articulates Rosebud’s portrayal of the intersection between media and theater industries. Rosebud evidenced Schlingensief’s passion for bad theater, on and off stage, in its staging of 9/11 debates, emulation of terrorism such as live bomb threats, or its use of reality-derived, contemporary characters like the German Chancellor and Deutsches Theater Berlin’s dramaturg, Roland Koberg. The stage of Rosebud patched together quotations of Ibsen, of Zadek, of the dramatic form, of German theatrical practice, constructing an indicting play on theater itself.

Aufgrund ihrer verwandten Störstrategien sind Hermann Nitsch und Christoph Schlingensief wie „zwei Zwillingsbrüder“ zu betrachten, die individualisierte Künstlerpersönlichkeiten aufweisen. Sie sind zudem von der institutionskritischen Inszenierung theatraler, körperzentrierter Präsenz und Erfahrung des Realen bis zur Fusionierung ritueller, religiöser und politischer Elemente verwandt und sehr gute compagnons de route. Diese Publikation widmet sich der Analyse des Theaters als Kunst bzw. Ästhetik kultureller Selbstreflexion und Selbstveränderung in Nitschs und Schlingensiefs postdramatischen Inszenierungs- sowie Störstrategien im Spannungsfeld von Religion, Politik und Theater.

The introductory chapter argues for the relevance of seeing Christoph Schlingensief’s variegated body of work through the lens of theatrical realism. It places Schlingensief within a stylistically heterogeneous tradition of realism primarily defined by its extra-aesthetic social outreach that obsesses about what lies occluded by the visual clutter, rather than being defined by surface mimesis. Schlingensief’s oft-conjured metaphors of darkness and exposures signaled his allegiance to the socially invisible, from the unemployed to refugees, who invalidate by their marginal existence the fronts of equanimity, democracy, and community. His realist theater understood that the surface obscures reality more than reveals it. His work aimed to de-naturalize held images of reality, not naturalize the stage, using techniques such as detournements, the copying and undoing of already existing elements. Schlingensief imitated characters, situations, and narratives thriving in the social realm, hinting at the interbreeding between fiction and reality in the age of the mass spectacle. He practiced a theatrical realism that combined interrelated dimensions of critique: political (critique of reality), aesthetic (critique of formal artistic means), and institutional (critique of theater as a cultural apparatus). Schlingensief’s work begs for a widening of our conceptualization of theatrical realism.

At a time when an unprecedented number of asylum seekers is reaching the borders of Fortress Europe, and Western discourses on national identities take on the features of collective hysteria, postcolonial writing can once again prove crucial in probing the boundaries of political and ethical debates. Such is no doubt the case of J. M. Coetzee’s novel The Childhood of Jesus (2013), i.e. a dystopian fiction in which all the characters, including the protagonists, are strangers more or less recently arrived by boat to a mysterious “new” country with no apparent history and a decidedly Beckettian twist. In this new location, which seems to be posthumous or downright unreal (as its Spanish name Novilla literally translates as “no city”), every newly arrived has been shorn of his/her memory and is looked after by a pervasive state bureaucracy which, though maintaining a benign attitude, allows for no variety, no personal initiative, no individual passion and no irony. Comparing Coetzee’s novel to Christoph Schlingensief’s performance art show Foreigners Out! Schlingensief’s Container (2000), in which a dozen assumedly “real” asylum seekers were provocatively engaged in a parodic reality show and exposed to be voted out of Austria by the local audience, I intend to demonstrate that explicitly postcolonial (and dystopian) allegories and parodies may have an unprecedented impact on present-day voyeuristic society’s understanding of geopolitical dynamics. Drawing on Deleuze’s immanent idea of difference as difference-in-itself, which undermines traditional binary oppositions and processes of othering, I propose that postcolonial art such as Coetzee’s and Schlingensief’s has an irreplaceable power of envisaging alternative possibilities of relating and living together in the contemporary identity-driven postcolonial world.

Die mediale Entwicklung von der Feder über die Schreibmaschine bis zum Computer spiegelt sich in den literarischen Texten. Die Medien des digitalen Schreibens hinterlassen wie alle Schreibgeräte Spuren, beeinflussen die Texte stilistisch und bewirken einen Wandel der Gattungen.
Elfriede Jelinek zum Beispiel kommt ihrer Schreibwut in rasender Tippgeschwindigkeit am Computer nach. Sie kopiert, überschreibt und vernetzt. Es entstehen große Mengen an Prosa, die sie zum Teil auf ihrer Homepage zugänglich macht. Christoph Schlingensief dagegen diktierte, wenn er etwas zu Papier bringen wollte.

Zu einer gängigen Äußerungsform ist in den letzten fünfzehn Jahren das Bloggen geworden. Literarische Blogs sind geprägt von der schnellen Datenübermittlung durch das Internet oder der Verbindung mit Bild und Ton. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Analyse sind die Blogs der Autoren Rainald Goetz und Wolfgang Herrndorf sowie des Theater- und Filmemachers Christoph Schlingensief.

Il testo si propone di analizzare l’attivismo come forma di relazione complessa all’interno di quelle pratiche artistiche che, facendo uso di approcci partecipativi e azioni performative hanno messo in discussione il ruolo dello spazio pubblico. In particolare dopo aver ripercorso il dibattito critico artistico in me- rito all’autonomia dell’arte e la sua valenza etica attraverso la querelle tra i due critici Claire Bishop e Grant Kester, il testo propone l’analisi di due interventi che hanno ridiscusso lo spazio pubblico nella sua logica di spazio del consenso e della rappresentazione lavorando sulla marginalità delle comunità non rappresentate e non rappresentabili. Gli interventi che verranno analizzati sono: Art. 2 realizzato dall’artista Adriana Torregrossa (Torino, 1999) e Bitte liebt Österreich realizzato dall’artista tedesco Christop Schlingensief (Vienna, 2000). I due interventi in questione verranno soprattutto analizzati alla luce del meccanismo di imprevedibilità del loop di feedback, teorizzato dalla studiosa Erika Fischer- Lichte nel suo Estetica del Performativo (2004) ovvero, l’impossibilità di collegare una determinata azione a una diretta conseguenza dal momento che i due quadri - quello performativo e quello della realtà - non vengono apertamente dichiarati, chiamando di fatto in causa lo spettatore a prendere consapevolezza della sua risposta in base al quadro d’azione che decide di seguire

Mea Culpa to trzecia część trylogii poświęconej Two-jej walce z rakiem. Bez wątpienia często tak było, że moje prace powstawały celowo i z rozmysłem po to, by zwrócić na siebie uwagę i po nic więcej. Eine zentrale Frage des Buches ist die nach den Ursachen und Kriterien, die insbesondere im 20. Jahrhundert darüber entschieden, welche Anerkennung ein Künstler finden konnte. Als ein zentrales Kriterium erkennt Ruppert die Idee des Künstlers als schöpferisches Individuum - das Stichwort lautet Kreativität!
