Alexander Kluge

Die Überlegungen meines Beitrags fußen auf der Annahme, dass zwischen den Denkarten, Schreibweisen und Produktionsformen der Realisten Kracauer und Kluge interessante Ähnlichkeiten und Korrespondenzen bestehen, die jedoch bisher kaum beachtet oder erforscht wurden. Diese möchte ich im Folgenden anhand eines Aspekts nachzeichnen. Kracauer und Kluge orientieren sich als Anwälte des Besonderen an einer Darstellungs- und Forschungsform, die das Fragmentarische der Ganzheit, das Partikulare dem Universellen und die Konstellation dem System gegenüber vorzieht. Dieser anti-systematische Grundzug in ihrem Schaffen rückt die Frage ins Zentrum, wie das erkenntnistheoretische und ästhetische Gefüge eines Realismus gestaltet sein muss, der sich mit sozialer Realität zwar auf eine unsystematische, tentative Weise beschäftigt, dabei allerdings keinen Verzicht auf synthetische Interventionen oder, wie es bei Kluge heißt, »massenhaftes Unterscheidungsvermögen« leisten will.

Depuis les années 1960, les factographies, formes littéraires singulières, émergent dans le paysage européen et nord-américain. Ces compilations de notes prises sur le vif ou de documents prélevés dans les archives se présentent comme des captations fragmentées du réel et des discours qui le constituent. Préférant les modèles du montage et de l'enregistrement à ceux de la composition littéraire, elles abandonnent la forme narrative au profit de techniques alternatives d'écriture du réel et s'approprient certains questionnements de l'art contemporain, de façon à produire des dispositifs destinés à renouveler l'attitude des lecteurs face aux oeuvres, au monde et à l'histoire.

Seit Ende der achtziger Jahre beliefert der Autor und Filmemacher Alexander Kluge über seine Produktionsgesellschaft dctp die kommerziellen deutschen Fernsehsender mit einem kaum mehr überschaubaren Strom von Sendungen, die allen Erwartungen an Thematik und Gestaltung von Fernsehprogrammen zuwider zu laufen scheinen. Der Band stellt im Kontext der Debatten um die Zulassung kommerzieller Fernsehsender zunächst die Voraussetzungen dar, die zur Gründung von Kluges Produktionsfirma führten. Der zweite Teil untersucht dann ausführlich Kluges Produktionspraxis und das thematische Spektrum seiner Sendungen. Zum Abschluss wir das Konzept des "Autorenfernsehens" diskutiert.

The essay addresses the politics of biography in the interpretation and reception of “outsider artist” Judith Scott’s work. Drawing from feminism, disability studies, and Alexander Kluge and Oskar Negt’s History and Obstinacy (1981) and its political economy of labor power, the essay proposes a new method of analysis which would foreground Scott’s work as a mode of institutional critique. »Wer ist Dein Freund Axel Kluge?«, wollte Siegfried Kracauer am 10. Dezember 1962 von Theodor W. Adorno wissen, nachdem er Alexander
Kluges Erstlingswerk Lebensläufe gelesen hatte. Der 73-Jährige, der seit
dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs mit Adorno befreundet und im Gegensatz
zu diesem nach 1945 nicht nach Frankfurt zurückgekehrt war, zeigte sich
spürbar berührt von diesem Buch aus dem Umkreis der jungen Menschen,
die sein einstiger Schüler nun um sich versammelt hatte. Es sprach ihn an,
weil Kracauer darin Parallelen zu seiner eigenen Art des Nachdenkens und
Schreibens entdeckte, nämlich ein starkes Interesse an der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit und eine emphatische Hinwendung zur Erfahrungswelt der Individuen. Das ist eine interessante Konstellation: Adornos Lehrer trifft Adornos Schüler und es werden geistige Verwandtschaften deutlich, ohne dass die Schüler bis dahin den Lehrer ihres Lehrers kannten – ob und inwiefern über die Bande Adorno gespielt oder gerade unabhängig von diesem Dritten ist die Frage.

'Les conditions objectives [Das Objektive]', écrit Alexander Kluge, 'nous dépassent, nous n’en avons pas moins raison de redouter les réserves massives d’un subjectif qui échappe à notre conscience. Il est dangereux, avec la méthode et l’exigence de Marx, de s’exposer en 2008 à cette réalité [Wirklichkeit] : il y a de quoi se décourager.' Je propose de poser ici l’espièglerie d’Alexander Kluge, littéralement son Eulenspiegelei, comme si, d’une certaine manière, elle ne l’était pas. Ce qui précède redouble ainsi non seulement le point de vue de Kluge – du moins l’un d’entre eux qui peut être exprimé – mais opère également comme une déclaration programmatique de Nachrichten aus der ideologische Antike. En d’autres termes, je propose de prendre sérieusement en considération certains apartés, renvois ou suppléments qui apparaissent aux franges du film.

Bertolt Brecht’s writings have been influential in film theory and cinema. Yet Brecht’s enthusiastic reception on the part of 1970s film theory has been followed by skepticism and criticism on the part of contemporary cognitivist film theory. For many years film scholars understood the adjective “Brechtian” to characterize a set of stylistic devices which are radical in themselves yet not a method. One of the reasons for this has to do with the fact that film scholarship relied on Brecht’s writings on theatre (which have so far only been available in unsatisfactory selection in translation) and not on his film essays. Marc Silberman’s brilliant translation, published as Bertolt Brecht: on Film and Radio (London: Methuen, 2001) has not changed Brecht’s critical reception in the discipline of film studies, because film scholars tend to associate Brecht with his reception within 1970s film theory. This article goes back to Brecht’s writings on the film medium so as to trace the misunderstandings of his reception in the field of film studies. I suggest that Brechtian film theory and cinema remains an “unfinished project.” (AK)

Alexander Kluge's 'Nachrichten aus der ideologischen Antike' (2008) is a massive film essay that explores Sergei Eisenstein's unrealised film of Marx's 'Kapital'. In this essay, a number of interconnections between the three texts (Kluge, Eisenstein, Marx) are explored to show how Kluge's film illustrates both Marx and Eisenstein's relevance today.
The essay was published by Lokaal 01 (Breda, NL) as part of its 'theoretical space' ('Theoretische Ruimte': ThRu) to accompany an exhibition project.

Zama, Argentine author Antonio Di Benedetto’s second novel, was published in 1956, but its action is set during the final decade of the 18th century in an isolated colonial outpost of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. In an influential 1972 essay, Juan José Saer proclaims that Zama carries out a remarkable refutation of the historical novel, parodically deconstructing the historicist ideology underlying the genre. This paper instead reads Zama as a modernist historical novel, showing how it relies on the formal conventions of aesthetic modernism to narrate the subjective, embodied experience of its protagonist, an American-born colonial functionary named Diego de Zama. Thus, rather than conceiving Zama as a refutation of the historical novel, this paper argues that it enacts an important double exposure of aesthetic modernism to the historical novel, and vice versa. On the one hand, Di Benedetto’s novel lays bare the rhetorical foundations of the classical historical novel and its aspiration to objectively reconstruct history; on the other, it relies on modernist techniques in its effort to adequately represent Zama’s subjective, embodied experience of history. This double exposure paves the way for a distinct vision of history which is here brought to light by analyzing a series of affinities between Zama’s approach to history and some of the core ideas expressed by German theorists Alexander Kluge and Oskar Negt in their recently-translated book History and Obstinacy. Their pursuit of forms of “obstinate” resistance embedded in the sub-individual characteristics of the human body and their tendencies toward autonomy and self-regulation relates compellingly to certain methods employed in Zama to narrate Diego de Zama’s experiences, and allows for a new understanding of the theoretical implications of Di Benedetto’s decision to set his modernist novel in the distant historical past.

In Germany, Kluge is regarded both as a major filmmaker and as a major social theorist in the tradition of the Frankfurt School. His films center upon the question
of memory and history. For Kluge, the memory of any given situation is multiform, and the situation in space and time of its many forms is the result of perspectives in the present. To put this in another way, memory has a history, or, more precisely, histories.This does not mean that the relationship between history and memory is,
or should be, balanced or stable. In Kluge’s work, the tension or outright conflict between history and memory is both necessary and productive.Thus my emphasis
with regard to Kluge’s films is to locate "a break in the ancient bond of identity," a break in the equilibrium of memory and history.The basis of Kluge’s critical formulation of what is lacking in German history is the intertwining of memory with history, archive, documentary, and fiction and its subsequent regression to the problem of identity.This “lack” must be thought of in terms of what it is to have a positive identity
of the German people.

This article presents a theoretical analysis of the concept of media space, which is understood as the result of the interaction between technological networks and the communication structure (producers, audiences, institutions, uses). This discussion is developed on the basis of a critical interpretation of Jurgen Habermas’ concept of liberal public sphere. Subsequently, the article discusses the formation of a plebeian aurality in Peru, the result of the technification of Indigenous music in the context of mass-migration. Taking as a case study the work of the writer and anthropologist Jose Maria Arguedas with said music, his intellectual practices are examined as a political intervention in the new media space, aimed at recomposing the nation's sound landscape.

The contradiction between restorative justice and poetic justice has led to a repeated critical self-reflection of the theatre as a medium, and was finally overcome in 20th century post-dramatic theatre, starting with Bertolt Brecht. Brecht‘s departure from Aristotelian theatre is directed from the outset against the principles of reward and punishment, which were crucial to poetic justice. Following on from naturalism, Brecht opposed these two fundamental principles with the idea of an “open-ended play”, whose end remains open and whose moral is developed only in a dialogue with the audience that is comparable with the conferencing of restorative justice.
The paper investigates the influence of Brecht‘s model of epic theatre and his theory of didactic theatre on the political film in the Brechtian tradition that emerged in certain strands of film theory and cinematic practice since the early 1960s. This influence can be detected in the films of Alexander Kluge and Jean-Luc Godard.

People's Poland in the 1970s is well-known for political rebellion, but the extent to which cinema aesthetics were radicalized following the death of revisionism in 1968 is still under-explored. In this paper, I show how late filmmakers Grzegorz Królikiewicz (1939-2017) and Piotr Szulkin (1950-2018) moved beyond the limitations of documentary realism and psychologized narrative that viewed political cinema as constituting a settled kind of knowledge to be transmitted to audiences. Instead, their early avant-docs embraced contingency in meaning and the viewer's role in assembling it, forging an embodied, theoretical, micro style of cinematic communication. Articulating alienation in People's Poland through the marginal and un-serious, the mess of labouring bodies and human feelings, they stand the biopolitics of the state on its head, opening the door to new possibilities and new ways of being together, much like the Solidarity movement itself. I read them in terms of what Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge called the 'haptic sensorium, ' the stirrings of feeling and sensation at the beginning of life from which human labour is drawn-and our irreducible ability to fight back.

Walter Benjamin beschimpfte ihn 1924 als »Lausejungen«, Josef Stalin nannte ihn einen »tollen Burschen«, sah ihn jedoch bald als lästigen »Dummkopf«. Ähnlich Ernst Thälmann, der vor »Scholemismus« warnte. Für den Philosophen Gershom Scholem hingegen war er jedoch vor allem eins: der große Bruder.

Aufgewachsen in einer Berliner jüdischen Familie starteten beide eine Revolte gegen den autoritären Vater und den Chauvinismus des Ersten Weltkrieges. Werner inspirierte den jüngeren Bruder zum Zionismus, er selbst bekannte sich nach langer Sinnsuche zum Kommunismus. Werner Scholem stieg schnell auf, in den Reichstag und die KPD-Zentrale. Als Organisationsleiter »bolschewisierte« Scholem die KPD, nur um 1926 als erbitterter Gegner Stalins aus der Partei geworfen zu werden.

1933 wurde Scholem unter mysteriösen Umständen verhaftet, 1935 überraschend vom NS-Volksgerichtshof freigesprochen, jedoch nie freigelassen. Scholem wurde 1940 im KZ Buchenwald ermordet. Bis heute ranken sich literarische Legenden um seine Verhaftung. Franz Jung und Alexander Kluge erzählten sie als Spionagedrama, eine besondere Rolle spielte Scholem auch in Hans-Magnus Enzensbergers Roman »Hammerstein oder Der Eigensinn« (2008). War Scholem Agent im Auftrag der Sowjetunion? Verführte er die Generalstochter Marie-Louise von Hammerstein, um ihr die Aufmarschpläne der Reichswehr gen Osten zu entlocken?
