Elfriede Jelinek

This paper explores the mechanisms of construction of ‘otherness’ at both the levels of language and content in Elfriede Jelinek’s text Die Schutzbefohlenen and in its English translation.
Firstly, Jean-François Lyotard’s critique of Hegel and conception of a politics of forgetting will be applied to the text as a productive tool to enrich a post-modern reading. In Heidegger and the “jews”, Lyotard introduces the “jews” as the unrepresentable excess of our identity, that unconceivable element which needs to be removed, exterminated, forgotten for a sense of unified, pure identity to be secured. Jelinek’s “wir”/“we” in Die Schutzbefohlenen, hovering between being and non-being, untimely beyond time and space, dissolving in water into nothingness, indeed embody the Lyotardian ‘forgotten’ that the West drowns in a desperate attempt to prevent this threat from coming to the surface to be seen, heard and disturb the illusion of an identity.
Secondly, the analysis will incorporate a queer perspective by applying Sara Ahmed’s concept of ‘spatial orientation’ and ‘normalisation of directions’ to highlight the way in which the textual references to movements reveal and challenge totalizing ideals of “sameness” and spatial identity (nationalism).
In this respect, the paper pays close attention to linguistic mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion and to the tension/interplay between patterns of unification and fragmentation. These include: alternations of the particles “ein-“ and “aus-” and the personal pronouns “wir”, “Sie”, “du”, “ihr”; the conflation between an all-encompassing divine and bureaucratic authority; play on words in revealing the hypocrisy of democratic ideals.
These aspects are analysed by comparing the text with the English translation (Charges (The Supplicants)), highlighting potential translation challenges, gains, losses and the way the two languages use their linguistic and cultural specificities in ‘othering’ and ‘queering’.
Lyotard’s forgotten “jews” and Ahmed’s displaced others emerge as productive elements which, applied to the German and English texts, enhance Jelinek’s disruption of any comforting, unifying pattern of identity and of those grand narratives of freedom and humanity that Europe holds dear, exposing their hidden yet dangerous mechanisms of selective inclusion and oppressive exclusion.

Der auditive Diskurs im deutschen Roman der Moderne und der Postmoderne: der Versuch der Typologie

Im Beitrag werden die methodologischen und kultur-historischen Gründungen der Typologie der auditiven Diskurses im deutschen Gegenwartsroman untersucht. Der auditive Diskurs wird als akustischen vs. musikalischen Medien im literarischen Diskurs interpretiert. In der Mitte von der Aufmerksamkeit befindet sich die Veränderung des ideologischen und formalen Deutungen des Klanges und der Musik. Auf dem Material der modernen und postmodernen Romane (Th. Mann, H. Hesse, E. Jelinek, Th. Bernhard, R. Schneider u.a.) wird die Reinterpretation und die Dekonstruktion der romantischen Mythe dargestellt.

J elineks Oeuvre ist immer "mehr", ist literarische Gesellschaftskritik und Auseinander-setzung mit Identitätsdiskursen, ist Reflexion auf Kapitalismus, Nationalismus und Im-perialismus, auf Kolonialismus, Chauvinismus und Rassismus, auf Körperkonstruktionen und Normierungen im Rahmen biopolitischer Machtregime, auf die Frage von Autor_innen-schaft und Sprecher_innenpositionen, auf ästhetische Verfahrensweisen als avantgardisti-sche und politische Schreibpraxen im Spannungsfeld von Autorität und Subversion, Macht und Ermächtigung. Ihre radikale Gesellschaftskritik entäußert sich als progressiver Schreib-fluss, oft in Kleinschreibung und/oder "Flächenschreibung" (Textflächen) und willkürlicher Interpunktion. Geschlechtsidentitäten und ganz besonders Geschlechterverhältnisse stehen dabei beständig im Zentrum der Jelinek'schen Textwelten. 2 Ist nun Gender Revisited im Zusammenhang mit dem Jelinek'schen Oeuvre das Thema, so sind, qua relevanter Theoriebestände und Wissensformationen, nicht zuletzt Fragen der Identi-tätskonstruktion oder der Subjektivierung (subjectivation) angesprochen-wobei die Viel-stimmigkeit von Jelineks Texten, die Differenziertheit und oft auch Widersprüchlichkeit der Argumentationslinien verschiedene Formen kritisch feministischer Ansätze erfordern, zumal oftmals diskrepante Formen von Identitätskonstruktionen oder-dekonstruktionen in ein-und demselben Text lesbar werden. Das Spektrum der ertragreichen Ansätze reicht von gender-und queertheoretischen bis zurück zu klassisch feministischen dort, wo es um benachteiligte, diskriminierte oder unterdrückte Frauen geht-"Frau" also als Entität not

Ein Sportstück (1998) is by no means the first of Elfriede Jelinek’s works to have dealt with the theme of sport.  It is merely the publication in which sport receives its most central treatment. This article interprets Jelinek’s deployment of sport and its intersection with sociological, philosophical, and dramaturgical theories of sport.  Jelinek’s writing can be seen to engage with sport in a series of interconnections with the media, religion, gender, and with the social and political dimensions of the practice and spectacle of sport.  In Elfriede Jelinek, sport is not the civilizing force of Eliasian social enquiry,  but the embodiment of war in peacetime and, ultimately, a symptom of proto-fascist enthusiasm for the strong, healthy body and condemnation of the weak and the sick. This latter perspective gains an Austrian dimension in Jelinek’s critique of the current political situation in Austria and the growth in popularity of the right-wing, populist party, the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ), with its fit, telegenic former leader, Jörg Haider.

Der Aufsatz geht der Frage nach, ob der Chor, der Schiller zufolge auf die Verkörperung auf der Bühne angewiesen ist, im Theatertext Funktionen erfüllen kann, die über die Implikation der Aufführung hinausgehen. Exemplarisch wird in Stücken von Heiner Müller, Tankred Dorst und Elfriede Jelinek nach Momenten gesucht, in denen der Chor durch Sprechakte eine Ebene der Inszenierung in den Text integriert und so eine Unabhängigkeit von der Aufführung auf der Bühne erreicht.

Der Aufsatz diskutiert das Konzept des „Postdramatischen“ anhand eines Werks, das sich bereits bei seiner Erstaufführung in Wien 1998 als Kontrastprogramm zu "Wolken.Heim." (1988) präsentierte: Dass "Ein Sportstück" gerade von Einar Schleef inszeniert wurde, war eine unmissverständliche Entscheidung für Schleefs spezifische, gerne „dionysisch“ genannte Chorauffassung. Auch wenn man die jeweilige Form der Umsetzung außer Acht lässt, ist es nicht die intertextuelle Dimension des Chorischen als solche, die beide Dramen unterscheidet: Auch "Ein Sportstück" entsteht erst durch seine Positionierung in einem hochgradig verdichteten Verweisungsgeflecht. Neben dem traditionellen Fundus der Boulevardpresse dominieren einerseits Texte zum Thema der „Masse“ oder „Doppelmasse“ (Canetti, Herbert Jäger, Schillers „Taucher“), zum anderen Elemente aus antiken Tragödien und der ‚chorfreien’ bürgerlichen Antikenrezeption (Elektra, Orestie, Penthesilea), raffiniert verknüpft mit Bezügen auf poetologische und kulturkritische Texte zur Theorie der Tragödie und ihren Merkmalen (Peripetie, Katharsis usw.).
Genau in diesem Feld ist auch die Grundfrage situiert, die das Stück
strukturiert. Und erst hier gewinnen auch die Relationen von Chor
und Monolog, Kollektiv und Individuum sowie von Intertextualität
und ‚Plot’ ihre Konturen: im Kontext der Frage nach dem ‚Schicksal’
des Tragischen und den Bedingungen einer postdramatischen Tragödie
in der ‚Spektakelgesellschaft’. Dass die Ansichten hierüber scharf
auseinander gehen, weiß man seit Botho Strauß’ Anschwellendem
Bocksgesang. Eine Reihe exemplarischer Positionen in dieser Auseinandersetzung (P. Stein, B. Strauß, P. Handke, H. Müller) fügen sich
im Sportstück zu einem zweiten intertextuellen Feld, das nicht nur die
Theatron-Achse thematisiert und ins Spiel zieht, sondern auch ein
hoch präzises Dramengerüst sichtbar werden lässt. In Kreuzform stehen
sich nicht zwei Massen, sondern zwei „Doppelmassen“ (Canetti)
gegenüber: eine sich ihrer Interessensunterschiede bewusste Theater- bzw. Elitenmasse, und eine ohnmächtig antagonistische Unterschicht-
‚Masse’ (u.a. die Fußballfans). Im Zentrum der Figuration wird ein
wiederum gedoppeltes „Zwischenspiel“ als Kreuzung möglicher Lesarten
und Reaktionsformen auf das im Theater Gesehene oder Erlebte
erkennbar: Wahrnehmbar ist entweder ein ‚leichtes’ Spiel einer über
alle Unterschiede hinweg zusammenhaltenden Elite, die keinen Dialog
braucht, oder, auf Seiten der Unterprivilegierten, ein unmöglicher
Dialog und ein buchstäblich mörderischer Ernst (Herta Blauensteiner
und Andreas Münzer in der Pietà).
Die locker klingende Regieanweisung Jelineks, das Stück handle „im
Grunde“ vom Sport „oder auch von ganz was andrem“, erweist sich
folglich als sehr ernst zu nehmende Alternative. "Ein Sportstück" inszeniert das Gezwungensein, zwischen zwei Formen von Öffentlichkeit
zu wählen: zwischen einem Wettlauf um visuelle Medienpräsenz,
d.h. einer Öffentlichkeit als Sport, die mit der steigenden Macht einer
unsichtbaren, sich in geschlossenen Clubs arrangierenden Elite einhergeht; und einer Öffentlichkeit als Verfahren (Habermas), die einen
dialogischen Meinungsaustausch und eine Repräsentation kennt, die
sich von den Gegensätzen zwischen Authentizität und Verstellung,
Ernst und Spiel, Politik und Ästhetik aber weder zerreißen, noch ans
Kreuz nageln lässt.

Ciało jako inny, obcy, wykluczony, ciało jako przestrzeń napięcia między toż-samością a innością, ciało poza innością i tożsamością. Ciało-tekst – otwarte. Ciało o zmiennej intensywności, bez ustanku pulsujące między tym, co obce a tym, co toż-same. Ciało ustanawiające granice, by w kolejnym kroku je znieść, mówiące: „ja”, by zaraz temu zaprzeczyć, tworzące wnętrze i rozpływające się w zewnętrzności pofałdowanej powierzchni. Ciało radykalnie zróżnicowane, to zwierzęce, to ludzkie, to przestrzenne, to wirtualne, to duchowe, to materialne, to kobiece, to męskie, to dojrzałe, to dziecięce, migocące różnicami, stające-się-innym, a w efekcie niedostrzegalne, zlewające się ze światem w działaniu. Ciało tętniące życiem, ciało różnicujące świat i jednocześnie go zmieniające. Ciało będące podstawą myślenia o tożsamości, inności, podmiotowości, wspólnocie, etyce czy polityce i otwierające te kategorie na to, co nadchodzi.

Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die ökonomische Entwicklung von den 1970er Jahren bis heute und ihre literarische Verarbeitung, anhand der beiden Werke "Die Liebhaberinnen" und "wir schlafen nicht", darzustellen.
Beide Werke entstanden aufgrund großer wirtschaftlicher Veränderungen, einerseits ausgelöst durch die "Hausarbeitsdebatte" in den 1970ern und andererseits durch die großen Börsen- und Wirtschaftskrisen, allen voran dem Platzen der "dotcom-bubble" im Jahre 2000. Beide Romane erzählen von Frauen, welche in den jeweiligen ökonomischen Systemen wirtschaft-lich handeln.
Da die Ökonomie als geschlechtslos dargestellt wird, analysiere ich im Folgenden, inwieweit die Protagonistinnen als homini oeconomici agieren und ob man tatsächlich von einem geschlechtslosen bzw. weiblichen homo oeconomicus sprechen kann. „Als angeblich völlig abs-traktes Subjekt der Wirtschaftstheorie impliziert er [Anm. der homo oeconomicus] dennoch eine weiße, männliche, gesunde Identität. Nun nicht mehr?“ (Habermann 2010) Dazu werden die unterschied-lichsten ökonomischen Faktoren in den Texten untersucht und verglichen. Durch diesen Ver-gleich sollen Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der beiden Romane hervorgehoben werden.

The vampire has haunted the pages of countless literary works, from its first appearance in the 18th century to the present day. Emerging in its various fantastical forms, the sensuality, sexuality and violent voracity of this villain ensure that it remains a captivating literary figure, representing the time-honoured human desires of ‘power, sex and immortality.’  The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the combination of violence, gender, sex and death in the figure of the vampire reflects relationships between the sexes, as well as the position of women and of female artists in society.

În experiența mea ca actriță, am fost întodeauna curioasă să descopăr diferitele forme de expresie verbală în teatru, iar teatrul actual oferă o multitudine de variante de joc cu conținuturi ascunse în text și în cuvinte, iar posibilitatea mea de mă putea plimba prin universurile a două limbi materne, mi-a deschis orizonturi noi spre lumi teatrale noi, care pentru mine aduc la comun caracterul universal al teatrului, odată cu pătrunderea în limbajul său specific.
Teatrul contemporan, privit în dimensiunea sa spectacular, este un fenomen care fascinează lumea teatrală prin permanenta sa schimbare și reconstrucție. Cercetările literare și teatrale analizează și scot în evidență grija pentru un nou limbaj artistic, capabil de a redefini existența umană însăși, încercând să anticipeze direcția acestui nou val. Având în vedere tendințele comportamentale ale societății actuale, observăm cum comunicarea umană este pusă sub semnul îndoielii, fapt care încurajează experimentarea cu forme noi de text, dezvoltarea mai multor planuri de enunțare. Criza limbajului articulat a deschis scena autorilor curioși să examineze comunicarea umană, urmărind eliminarea factorilor considerați drept artificiali, inițiind astfel noi metode de scriere.
Acest aspect al metamorfozei textului de teatru m-a fascinat și m-a intrigat în aceeași măsură, odată cu descoperirea scenei teatrale austriece prin vizionarea spectacolelor după texte de Thomas Bernhard, Peter Handke și Elfriede Jelinek. Dintre autorii austrieci am rămas cu o acută curiozitate de a intra în lumea textelor scrise de autoarea Elfriede Jelinek, care, prin referințele ei și stilul subversive, fac din incursiunea în analiza textelor ei, aparent haotice și greu de deslușit, un labirint de înțelesuri și emoții, care, pentru un actor poate reprezenta încă o piesă de puzzle adăugată întregului din lumea teatrului. La baza cercetării mele stă, pe lângă încadrarea și analiza textelor scriitoarei Elfriede Jelinek în teatrul postdramatic, lucrarea Drama ca deranj (Drama als Störung) de Teresa Kovacs, de asemenea analiza și receptarea punerilor în scenă a pieselor scrise de Jelinek, din punct de vedere regizoral, dramaturgic și din perspectiva jocului actoricesc.

"Aufstörung", "Verstörung", "Zerstörung" – damit wurde Jelineks dramatisches Schreiben von Beginn an belegt, ohne jedoch den Begriff der Störung zu definieren oder zu differenzieren. Ging es zunächst um die Zerstörung des bürgerlichen Dramas und Repräsentationstheaters, sucht das Sekundärdrama eine Auf- und Verstörung, ein komplexes Miteinander von Drama und "postdramatischem" Theatertext.
Ausgehend von kommunikations-, medien-, kultur- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen beschreibt Teresa Kovacs erstmals Jelineks Ästhetik der Störung und zeigt, was passiert, wenn Jelineks Sekundärdramen auf ihre "Vorlagen", auf Goethes "Urfaust"  und Lessings "Nathan der Weise"  treffen.

Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) war ein Künstler, der am Puls der politischen, gesell-schaftlichen und medialen Entwicklungen arbeitete, mit seinen Aktionen und Projekten kon-ventionalisierte Wahrnehmungsmuster unterlief und herkömmliche Theaterformen sprengte.
Die Buchpublikation ist die erste umfassende wissenschaftliche Darstellung der Arbeiten des „Gesamtkünstlers“ Christoph Schlingensief. SpezialistInnen aus den Bereichen der Theater-, Literatur-, Musik-, Film-, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaft sowie JournalistInnen und Theater-leute analysieren Schlingensiefs künstlerischen Anspruch und theatrale Ästhetik.
Die Form von Schlingensiefs Arbeiten wird ebenso diskutiert wie die Neuerungen in Bezug auf die Verhältnisse von Fiktion und Realität, von Kunst und Leben, von Bühne und öffentli-chem Raum. Die Beiträge und Gespräche widmen sich der Prozesshaftigkeit von Schlingen-siefs Projekten, seiner spezifischen Arbeitsweise sowie der Vernetzung der Künste und den dadurch entstehenden medialen Verdichtungen und Kollisionen. Auch Schlingensiefs Strate-gien, latente gesellschaftliche Konflikte zum Vorschein zu bringen, sowie die Mechanismen der öffentlichen Erregungen werden untersucht.
Schlingensiefs Arbeiten werden dabei in einen größeren Kunst-Kontext gestellt, in die Tradi-tion der Avantgarden des 20. Jahrhunderts von der Dada-Bewegung über Strömungen wie Fluxus, Happening, Aktionskunst bis hin zum Gesamtkunst-Konzept von Joseph Beuys.
Ein wichtiger Aspekt ist auch Schlingensiefs Zusammenarbeit mit Elfriede Jelinek.

Background: In the twenty-first century, literatures from Central and Eastern Europe are marked by a boom of documentary fiction portraying complicity Nazi perpetration, Soviet terror, or other instances of 20th century mass violence and totalitarianism. Since understanding the past serves requirements of the present, the boom prompts the question: Why the interest in past complicities now? My hypothesis is that the texts address convergences between involvements in past acts of mass violence and current forms of participation in wrongdoings in neoliberalism. While these issues differ profoundly, they are related: structurally, both present the challenge of forming a nuanced notion of participation. Historically, they are related since justifications of past involvements have established the terminology, narratives, and heuristics in which terror, repression, and mass violence are subsequently discussed, thus forming the frame for negotiating current problematic involvements. Method: Critical discourse analysis is used to scrutinize the legal concept of complicity and combined it with close readings of passages from four literary texts to outline how attention to reciprocity in language can enhance our understanding of problematic involvement. Results: Literary portrayals of historical complicity are ambivalent; they can help to find models for comprehending issues of the present in cultural memory, but they can also serve to establish distance between present and past to appease the sense that all is not quite well, even after the demise of Nazi and Soviet terror. The article outlines two modes of distancing: a) spacio-temporal distancing of the commemorating point of view in 'the West' from the portrayed violence in 'the East', and b) moral distancing that casts the audience as superior to complicit characters. Conclusion: By pressing for analytic or consoling distance, both strategies of distancing amount to a complicity with the transmission of discourses that justify, excuse, or deny mass violence and totalitarian terror.

The paper situates Jelinek's play 'Wolken.Heim.' in the context of German political culture just before the Berlin Wall came down, and then suggests that the bleak view promulgated in the play can in part be explained by the negative view of the resources of embodied experience that Jelinek adopts. Timberlake Wertenbaker's 'Our Country's Good' is another play from 1988 which takes a much more positive view of embodied interaction. Naomi Rokotnitz's reading of Wertenbaker's play in 'Trusting Performance' shows a way beyond the political impasse in which Jelinek remain embroiled because of her negative take on the body, a negative take which is also reproduced in productions of the play.

This book ursues the hypothesis that fictional literature has been instrumental in the development and dissemination of European anti-Americanism from the early 1800s to today. Focusing on Britain, France and Germany, it offers analyses of a range of canonical literary works in which resentful hostility towards the United States is a predominant feature.

Das Unheimliche wird in Elfriede Jelineks „Die Kinder der Toten“ (1995) radikal ausbuchstabiert. Der Roman spielt in einer Berglandschaft, die sich zu Beginn als eine horrorhafte Lebensumwelt der Untoten, Doppelgänger, Vampire und anderer grauenerregender Gestalten erweist. Dabei ist auffällig, dass in der bisherigen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Roman Jelineks Appropriation literarischer Muster antiker Mythen eine untergeordnete Rolle spielte. Der Umstand ist umso erstaunlicher, da bei Jelineks Aufnahme und Weiterführung des Konzepts des Unheimlichen typischerweise antike Elemente immer wieder auftauchen. Das kulturell Imaginäre der Antike ist nicht lediglich ein Stichwortgeber, sondern wird in die Raum- und Zeitstruktur des Romans aufgenommen und als etwas Vergangenes in die Nachbarschaft aktueller Themen gestellt. Dieses poetische Konzept ist mit drei Gestalten aus der antiken Mythologie verbunden, die zu den wichtigsten Figuren der Mediengeschichte zählen: Hermes, Diana und Narziss.

"Waste studies” fits broadly under the rubric of dirt theory, by applying work on the ethics of waste to literature, film, theatre and the arts.  The humanities, with specific focus on the study of waste in literature, speaks with Sustainable Development discourse. Situated in an English Department, I focus on story and language. Sustainable Development or SD discourse is, at base, a rhetoric, one whose controversial and vexed history is evolving. A focus on story and metaphor can illustrate the affinity the study of literature has with Sustainable Development discourse.

LANGUAGE, SILENCE AND PASSIVITY. INQUIRIES INTO THE POTENTIAL UNIVERSALITY OF “FOULING ONE’S OWN NEST” AND A PERFORMANCE BY MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ

This article offers theoretical considerations of the relationship between the concept of fouling one’s own nest and the modern subjectivity entangled in politics, history and social contacts. At the heart of these reflections is the performance Rhythm 0 by Marina Abramović and an analysis of how the participants of the event engaged with the artist during and after the performance. The questions about memory and truth have not only been posed in the context of this symbolic artistic activity but regarding the wider issue of how a modern subject can function amidst an often forceful community that also defines the framework for understanding his or her own experience. This interpretation is preceded with thoughts on the relationship between silence, language and community in the context of fouling one’s own next.

Sporo się też dzieje. Podmioty wzajemnie się sobie przed-stawiają i redefiniują, afrofrancuscy obywatele oburzają się sposobem potraktowania ciał czarnoskórych aktorów, z ciemności wyłania się półnaga Hotentocka Wenus, a ofiary patrzą na nas uporczywie w milczeniu. Tymczasem jednostka wikła się w dialektyczny proces rozwoju dziejów, grupki ludzi przechadzają się po ulicy z hienami na łańcuchu, współczesna Hinduska plącze się pomiędzy dyskursem globalnym i lokalnym, Europa rozrasta się, tyje, puchnie i rośnie w siłę, a potem ujeżdża i ujarzmia byka, samo-świadome, samo-czujące, samo-ruszające i samo-odpowiedzialne ciało tańczy taniec odissi, teksty dramatyczne wylewają się w sposób nieprzewidywalny z ustalonych wcześniej form, dwadzieścia statystek w różnym wieku wygłasza chóralny poemat o rżnięciu, ja pyta kim jest ja, Organizacja Zarządzania Dobrem prywatyzuje uchodźców, dynamika płciowa pozostawia kobiecy i zmysłowy akcent, ale niestety przebieg spektaklu zakłócają prawicowi ekstremiści, a dostępu do teatru broni Krucjata Różańcowa. Tchórzostwo widza. Jelinek wypędza życie z teatru, a w całym tym scenicznym bałaganie krążą główne postacie dramatu. Lepiej jest wziąć ze sobą pejcz.

Mało tego: w lesie dzieją się rzeczy dziwne, dzikie i przewrotne („Do czego innego, kurwa, potrzebny jest las w Anglii?”, pyta retorycznie Butterworth). Brecht wykłada to klarownie: „Niech diabeł weźmie rozsądek!”. A zatem zamożna i pracowita mrówka daje konikowi polnemu dach nad głową i wyżywienie, żądając w zamian seksualnej dyspozycji dla siebie i innych, mężczyzna zmniejszony do rozmiarów krasnala odnajduje się w butelce po koniaku, przez niedopatrzenie otruci zostają synowie Jazona i Medei, Tejrezjasz oślepia elitę, zmultiplikowana Kasandra prowadzi popularny program rozrywkowy, Orestes zakłada ze swoim partnerem szkołę tańca, Fedra śpiewa hymn do słów Williama Blake’a, jakiś generał regularnie zjada mapę historyczną Europy, jednak przy podziale na kęsy respektuje jej dawne granice, a tradycja mityczna promieniuje sobie w planie bliskim, jak również dalekim, bo nie wie, że mit został zdegradowany. I jeszcze biesiadne spożywanie Szekspira, a u Moliera móżdżek przyprawiony masalą, przepiórki z pieca, szafran, sorbet, woda z Gangesu, leiszmanioza i gorączka dum-dum. Zasadniczo widz nie jest konieczny.

I co tu robić? Pozostaje tylko stymulować, irytować, ekscytować i rozwścieczać.

Help yourselves: intercultural theatre, transcultural theatre, ultracultural theatre, metacultural theatre, multicultural theatre, postdramatic theatre, folk theatre, ritualized theatre and theatrilized rituals, amateur theatre, professional theatre, country theatre, ethnotheatre, anthropological theatre, contaminated by ethnology, theatre of art, avant-garde theatre, Theatre of Sources, polyphonic theatre, multigeneration theatre, indigenous theatre, independent theatre, theatre which-is-not, and on top of that anti-opera, ethno-performance, multiperformance, solo-performance, dreadful pantomime and the Country Housewives Association. It’s clear now – “[t]heatre is not a newspaper!” Among those theatres and non-theatres a variety of cultural ebbs and flows, cultural transfers, transcultural practices, implied transgressions and thematized transgressions, cultural penetrations, liquidity of cultural identities and mutual glances, cultural revivalisms, dramaturgic recyclings, artistic patchworks, progressive over-writings, borrowed stories, intellectual jugglery, tradaptations, chaotic wordplays, rescuing destructions, hybridizations, interpenetrations, renarrations, revocations, reinterpretations, remixes, recontextualizations – in any case, cultural motion is on the rise.

A lot is happening, too. Subjects intro-duce and redefine themselves in front of one another, Afro-French citizens are outraged at the treatment of black actors’ bodies, out of darkness emerges Hottentot Venus, and the victims keep staring at us in silence. Meanwhile, an individual is entangled in the dialectical process of historical development, clusters of pedestrians walk down the streets with hyenas on chains, a contemporary Hindu woman flounders between local and global discourses, Europe is growing, getting fat, puffing itself up and gathering steam and then rides and tames the bull, the self-conscious, self-feeling and self-responsible body dances the Odissi dance, dramatic texts pour out unpredictably from pre-defined forms, twenty female extras of different ages declaim a choral poem on fucking, the I asks who is I, Welfare Management Organisation privatizes refugees, gender dynamics leaves a sensual and feminine mark, but unfortunately the spectacle is disrupted by right-wing extremists, and access to the theatre is blocked by the Rosary Crusade. Spectator’s cowardice. Jelinek runs life off the theatre, and in all that stage chaos circulate dramatis personae. A whip would come in handy.

There’s more: strange, wild and perverse things happen in the forest. (“What the fuck do you think an English forest is for?” asks Butterworth rhetorically). Brecht puts it in even simpler terms: “To hell with reason!” And so a wealthy and hardworking ant offers food and shelter to a grasshopper, demanding sexual disposal for herself and others, a man shrunk to the size of a dwarf finds himself in a cognac bottle, Jason and Medea’s sons are poisoned by mistake, Tiresias blinds the elite, multiplied Cassandra hosts a popular TV show, Orestes starts up a dance school with his partner, Phaedra sings a hymn to William Blake’s lyrics, some general regularly eats up a historical map of Europe but while biting off the pieces still respects its old borders, and the mythical tradition radiates both in the foreground and the background as it remains unaware of its own downgrading. And in addition, feasting on Shakespeare, brain spiced up with masala in Molière, roasted quails, saffron, sorbet, Ganges water, leishmaniasis and dum-dum fever. Essentially, the spectator is redundant.

So what shall we do? Nothing but stimulate, irritate, excite and infuriate.

A collection that re-visions the Austrian avant-garde, translated and published for the first time in English.

After 1945, a vibrant literary avant-garde emerged in Austria that has remained mostly unknown outside of the country. Their first publications appeared in a cultural and political environment still largely determined by seven years of Nazism (1938-1945) and four years of Austrofascism (1934-1938). Its writers drew on traditional and experimental methods to hollow out existing literary conventions and propose new ones, using montage, appropriation, satire, irony, and nonsense. Despite many shared intentions, though, the Austrian avant-garde was far from unified. Some of its writers repeated the authoritarian gestures and practices of the fascist period; others contributed to the creation of feminist and queer counterpublics by creating alternative presses, new kinds of literary events, and political writers’ collectives.

An Austrian Avant-garde offers a critical survey of experimental writing from Austria that captures the tensions inherent in the history of the avant-garde. Starting with texts from the 1950s by the Vienna Group, the anthology offers a survey of the complex, contested landscape of post-1945 Austrian literature, with an emphasis on the work of women writers. The editors’ preface and their introductions to individual texts offer contextualization and commentary that make the anthology accessible to a wide readership.
