The command of Jesus to ‘ love your enemies’ is frequently taken literally by Christians as a command to induce loving feelings within oneself for those toward whom one has antipathy. I argue in this essay that Jesus was not a systematic philosopher but spoke in aphorisms which although expressed as universal generalisations are really just drawing attention to typical human truths. He also used literary forms such as paradox, hyperbole, and antithesis leading to the conclusion that ‘loving your enemies’ is not intended as a command to induce an emotion but a recommendation to act with generosity.

Two academic events dedicated to the book hosted 7 commentators discussing its philosophical themes: the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
The book has also generated about 20 interviews in the main Israeli media channels.

Aphorisms occupy a central place in the works of Erasmus and Bacon. Erasmus wanted to construct the total library of antiquity through adages; Bacon's project was to construct the laboratory of modernity, its progress presented in the propagation of apho-risms. Like Erasmus, Bacon believed that the aphorism would stir readers to contemplate and inquire further. But unlike Erasmus, Bacon maintains that this process of discovery is accomplished not through endlessly combing through the archives of the ancients but rather by interrogating the book of the world.

This study engages in a literary comparison of the MT and LXX texts of two sayings—Prov 17:12 and 28:15. Of the 12 times the bear is alluded to in the MT, 2 of the incidences occur in these verses of Proverbs. While the LXX employs the term ἄρκος “bear” to translate the Hebrew דב , this noun appears in neither of these texts—the former passage failing to refer to any
animal at all and the latter reading λύκος “wolf” instead. This circumstance offers an occasion to reexamine the retroversions proposed in early critical scholarship and discuss the methods suggested for recovering the Hebrew text behind the LXX. While the tendency among contemporary scholars is to treat the LXX as an independent literary work in its own right, I hope to contribute to the debate by elucidating the literary aspects of the two texts and their methodology via an analysis of the image of the bear within the sapiential context.

The aim of this article is to analyze Wisława Szymborska's literary works in order to demonstrate that her aphoristic style is one of the most striking elements of her texts. Szymborska's style is particularly notable in that it is ironically aphoristic, containing parody of typical aphoristic schemata, paradox and tautology. Through this style, her work not only enriches the traditional repertoire of the genre but seems also to justify an important feature of her writing: its philosophical and intellectual character often discerned by critics. As a consequence, quotes from her oeuvre frequently enter diverse anthologies of 'wise and funny thoughts' and collections of the so-called 'winged' words.

L'ITALIA IN BREVE, ovvero tutto il mondo è paese, (with English Quotes), è un libro di aforismi, citazioni, battute e riflessioni sull’Italia e gli Italiani curato da Carl William Brown. Lo scritto presenta una vasta panoramica a livello storico, letterario e sociologico della nostra piccola grande realtà e vuole inoltre essere una modesta metafora sul percorso dell’umanità, che da vari secoli caratterizza il nostro caro pianeta. Il testo dopo alcuni pensieri introduttivi e una prefazione che spiega la genesi, lo stile e gli intenti del libro, presenta un'introduzione che, con l’ausilio di vari dati statistici, illustra in breve l'attuale situazione sociale, politica, economica e culturale del nostro paese. Seguono poi un centinaio di pagine di testi brevi in italiano, corredati da varie immagini dei luoghi più caratteristici della nostra penisola e circa una sessantina di pagine di testi brevi in inglese, allo scopo di fornire alcune notizie storiche e un’ampia carrellata di quello che importanti autori stranieri hanno detto, nel bene e nel male, sull’Italia e gli Italiani. Alla fine si possono trovare dei sintetici omaggi conclusivi e una serie di links a utilissime risorse presenti in rete sulla nostra nazione.

The aim of this paper is to present the literature of the meteorological aphorisms in some North Indian Indo-Aryan languages. Our presentation is based only upon written data, which are available in collections of proverbs and other sayings or in corpus of folk astrology.
The meteorological aphorisms, which can be considered as a class by themselves, contain two kinds of elements dealing respectively with the observation and the forecasting of weather and crops. This literature can be presented as didactic and predictive and is connected with folk astrology, especially as far as expressing date and time is concerned. Moreover, in North India, such corpus have been ascribed to legendary astrologers, whose names, as can be seen in the bhanitas, are linked with one another.
Many meteorological aphorisms can be traced as identical, with small formulary or dialectic differences, in many regions of North India. Hence we have a "continuum" of both aphorisms and formulae, the variations of which indicate their diffusion and their circulation. Thus, on the basis of this continuum, it is possible to create a thesaurus of meteorological aphorisms, which could be the beginning of a critical study.

Este artículo reflexiona sobre la escritura aforística a partir de una tríada de autores de gran relevancia para la evolución del género en los siglos XX y XXI: Antonio Machado, Antonio Porchia y José Bergamín. La obra de estos creadores supone un buen punto de partida para analizar algunas de las principales características del aforismo hispánico contemporáneo.

On January 3, 1661 a certain Amidei Alessandro offered to the king of England Charles II a manuscript collection of political aphorisms, that is currently preserved at the Library of Clarke, University of California at Los Angeles. He presented himself as the author of the maxims, which in reality were copied from a printed collection of aphorisms by Guicciardini, Lottini and Sansovino edited by the latter under the title Propositioni, overo Considerationi in materia di cose di Stato in 1583 and republished multiple times in the following decades. A singular figure with a shifting and elusive identity, Amidei was an Italian Jew who moved to England in 1656. As an audacious plagiarist, Amidei took full advantage of the flexibility of the manuscript form, recomposing the maxims to serve his own aims. This case study helps us to understand this creative reuse of aphoristic matter as a common practice of the Baroque age.

Mit der beinahe tautologischen Zusammenstellung von Kürze und Prägnanz im Thema der Betrachtungen kann – um bereits hier vorzugreifen – die Beziehung zwischen den beiden, ungleichen Größen angesprochen werden: die Kürze als rein formales Charakteristikum der Texte sowie – als semantische Komponente – die innere (inhaltliche) Komplexität (s. Barańczak 2004:123), Angemessenheit, Treffsicherheit und Pointe. Im Folgenden wird vorwiegend auf Gegebenheiten sprachlicher Natur eingegangen, die in der Translation zum Vorschein kommen.

Freud war Wissenschaftler, nicht Schriftsteller, aber er schrieb einen meisterhaften Stil - oft bewundert, viel gerühmt, wissenschaftlich jedoch bisher kaum gewürdigt. Nach einem Essay von Walter Muschg aus dem Jahr 1930 ist das vorliegende Buch die erste stilkritische Untersuchung von Freuds Prosa. Walter Schönau zeigt, welche Rolle die Berücksichtigung des Lesers als Gestaltungsprinzip spielt, und geht den Übereinstimmungen zwischen dem Stil Freuds und dessen Vorbild Lessing nach; er analysiert die Bedeutung der Mottos, denen Freud so große Aufmerksamkeit widmete, verfolgt die oft kunstvolle Art der Zitatverwendung, behandelt den Aphoristiker Freud und untersucht besonders eingehend ein Grenzgebiet zwischen wissenschaftlicher Mitteilung und literarischer Formung: die Bildlichkeit der Sprache Freuds und die von ihm bevorzugten Bildbereiche, etwa den der Archäologie oder der Entdeckungsreise, daneben die Wassermetaphorik oder die als Kompositionsprinzip wirksame Spaziergangs-Vorstellung. Einzelinterpretationen dreier Texte ("Katharina", "Vergänglichkeit", "1. Vorlesung zur Einführung in die Psychoanalyse") vergegenwärtigen Freuds Leistung als Erzähler, als Essayist und als Redner. In die Untersuchung einbezogen werden auch die Briefe; wo es zu einem genaueren Verständnis beiträgt, werden persönlich-biographische Voraussetzungen erörtert.
Im Anhang werden die Ergebnisse der Arbeit in deutscher, englischer und holländischer Sprache zusammengefaßt sowie Äußerungen und Urteile über Freuds Stil mitgeteilt.

L’Aforismario è una sorta di miscellanea composta di ri es- sioni, vignette cliniche, citazioni da opere psicoanalitiche e letterarie, caratterizzate da brevità ed essenzialità. “Illumina- zioni”, potremmo de nirle, di quelle che ci colgono durante la giornata, mentre lavoriamo o nelle pause di lavoro, e che guardate dalla giusta distanza appaiono una sorta di trama complessa che dà coerenza al pensiero e alla prassi che caratterizza l’Autore. — Quantitative linguistics is the comparative study of the frequency and distribution of words and syntactic structures in different texts. The aim of qualitative analysis is a complete, detailed description of the linguistic data. Quantitative analysis is made to assign frequencies to the linguistic features which are identified in the data, and rare phenomena receives (or should receive) the same amount of attention as more frequent phenomena. Thus, the aim of the presented study is to make a compared quantitative linguistic analysis of the most common Egyptian aphorisms in both languages Arabic and English by using the statistical system of R language. The comparison is done between one corpus of Egyptian aphorisms in Arabic language and another corpus of the Egyptian aphorisms in English language. All the data of the present study is analysed morphologically and semantically. Then the output of the analysed corpora is use as an input for doing the quantitative linguistic analysis by using R language statistical analysis; which make us able to query about the most frequent linguistic features of the Egyptian aphorisms database in both languages Arabic and English. Further, a comparison is done between the Egyptian aphorisms in Arabic language and the Egyptian aphorisms in English language, moreover; many more statistical analyses will be investigated from the present database of the Egyptian aphorisms.

Argues that Nietzsche designed the aphoristic style as a systematic method for unleashing the power and poetry of the creative imagination for philosophic purposes. Nietzsche stressed the crucial role of intuitive, non-rational, and imagistic modes of thought. The aphoristic method not only enabled Nietzsche to seize "impulsive illuminations," but served to communicate these insights in an invigorating fashion that retained the spontaneity, vividness, and excitement of their original conception. Although the aphoristic method provided this and many other philosophic and practical advantages, the disorderly and disjointed character of the aphoristic approach undermined its utility as a means of presenting ideas and ultimately caused widespread misunderstanding of Nietzsche's thought. In retrospect, Nietzsche's mastery of eidetic imagery and metaphor is relevant to modern psychological studies of imagery.
