L’articolo tenta di delineare un’analisi comparata fra Artemisia (1947) di Anna Banti e To the Lighthouse (1927) di Virginia Woolf, con particolare attenzione ai personaggi di Artemisia e Lily Briscoe, entrambe pittrici. Sebbene la scrittrice inglese sia stata più volte evocata dalla critica bantiana, infatti, mai le due autrici sono state oggetto di uno studio comparativo sistematico: approfondire i possibili legami intertestuali fra Artemisia e Al faro, cui spesso vengono preferite altre opere woolfiane come Orlando o A room of One’s Own, potrebbe pertanto rivelarsi interessante per indagare da un’ulteriore prospettiva la costruzione del primo personaggio di finzione ispirato alla vicenda di Artemisia Gentileschi – a maggior ragione perché nei decenni successivi la pittrice barocca sarà oggetto di un vero e proprio processo di “finzionalizzazione”, fra romanzi, opere teatrali, film, graphic novel, docufiction ecc.

The essay aims to outline a comparative analysis between Anna Banti’s Artemisia (1947) and Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, with a focus on the characters of Artemisia and Lily Briscoe, both painters. Indeed, even if the English writer was often mentioned by Banti’s critics, the two authors have never been the object of a systematic comparative study. Therefore, the article deepens the potential connections between Artemisia and To the Lighthouse (and not the most quoted Orlando or A room of One’s Own) in order to investigate from a further point of view the construction of the first fictional character inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi - particularly since the baroque painter will be the subject of a massive fictionalising process in the following decades, including novels, plays, films, graphic novels, docufictions etc.

Il contributo analizza l’opera di Banti come dispositivo enunciativo complesso in cui la tenuta dei diversi livelli narrativi è determinata dalle variazioni del paesaggio urbano, dispositivo simbolico e strutturale che cambia in funzione delle modalità del racconto. Sottoposta a uno sguardo lirico e deformante, la città di Venezia diventa metafora di una parola letteraria nuova, che resiste all’oblio del tempo e restituisce visibilità ad una presenza femminile rimossa e offesa dalla Storia.

«Se una donna scrive di un’altra donna, raramente sfugge all'etichetta di “femminismo”», annotava Enza Biagini nel 1971, alle prese con la prima, famosa monografia dedicata alla scrittrice italiana Anna Banti (1895 – 1985). Era il riassunto perfetto, nonché ironico, del giudizio della critica contemporanea sull’opera della scrittrice. Quasi che il femminismo rappresentasse un vezzo, un inciampo, invece della capacità analitica nel cogliere evidenti storture sociali in un ambiente determinato, l’Italia del secondo Novecento.
È oggi chiaro come Anna Banti intendesse rappresentare non tanto la staticità della condizione femminile, subordinata a un mondo dominato da uomini, ma la volontà di reazione – anche energica, anche parossistica – a questo preciso stato di cose. E in un contesto in cui ogni dialogo o evasione sembrano negati, spesso l’unica forma di reazione consiste nel gesto estremo: è il caso di alcuni racconti scritti tra il ’56 e il ’62, tra i quali La rana, Il paese delle serve, Campi elisi. In ciascuno di essi la donna reagisce alla condizione esistenziale insopportabile provocando, più o meno volontariamente, la propria morte.
L’intervento propone un’analisi dei tre racconti, usufruendo delle strategie suggerite dalla critica testuale e dal close reading: si cercherà in questo modo di chiarificare, di volta in volta, le coordinate della condizione femminile nei testi letterari, nel loro rapporto con la rappresentazione della morte.

‘Naked Ambitions’. This was the title of an article published in the Financial Times in July 2007, in which it was asked: ‘Do Italians, particularly Italian women, really think it acceptable to sell primetime quiz shows on terrestrial television by trying to stir the male genitalia instead of viewers’ brains? Or are they instead happy with life as it is – beautiful, flirtatious and with a supply of great shoes?’. Similar views surrounding women have been delivered through different media, linking the image of women to their body and appearance.

Regarded as having infirmitas, imbecillitas and levitas as key characteristics, women, their behaviours and their desires, have been a matter of concern since ancient times in Italy. In a world largely revolving around appearances, the image of women has been and still is of great importance. Since the Middle Ages, a series of laws regulating women’s apparel were approved, and some towns also established a figure with the task of controlling their compliance with the law (e.g. the Ufficiale sopra gli ornamenti delle donne in Florence). Throughout the centuries, alongside laws, many treatises were written. These writings aimed at standardising women’s image and ruled on their make-up, their apparel, their behaviour and strongly intruded in their intimate lives.

From the 18th century, the role of women started to change, with images of womanhood also evolving. In the Risorgimento, alongside women complying with the predominant image of womanhood linked to the private sphere, there were women who joined the patriotic fight, with some even dressing as men to become soldiers. In the first half of the 20 th century, the model of femininity radically changed, with the ideal woman embracing the androgynous look of the American flapper first and then the curvy Fascist woman who embodied motherhood. After the Second World War, while women began to obtain equal rights, their image started to undergo a process of hyper-sexualisation.

Nowadays, the use, abuse and objectification of the female body and its image in the media continuously leverages on the ambiguous and equivocal idea that womanhood means being ‘beautiful, flirtatious and with a supply of great shoes’, whereas online movements are encouraging body positivity and challenging standards of beauty as well as the importance of appearance in a woman’s life.

We seek to explore how these images and models of beauty changed over time in Italy, to focus on their narrative around femininity, and explore the links between reality and stereotypes, between real women and imagined womanhood.

L'incontro, tenutosi il 15 maggio 2019 presso l'Aula Forti di via Zamboni 32 a Bologna, è nato dalla mia proposta "Una pittura 'di memoria, non di maniera': Artemisia Gentileschi e Lily Briscoe, Virginia Woolf e Anna Banti" sottoscritta da altri 9 studenti del Dipartimento di FICLIT e coordinata dal Prof. Marco Antonio Bazzocchi, poi approvata e finanziata sulla base della pertinenza con il progetto “Dipartimento di eccellenza" – MIUR (Legge 232 del 1/12/2016).
Il dibattito, coordinato dal Prof. Bazzocchi e dal Prof. Filippo Milani, ha visto gli interventi di Fausta Garavini e Laura Desideri (curatrici del Meridiano dedicato a Anna Banti, "Romanzi e Racconti"), ai quali è seguito anche un mio approfondimento sui possibili legami intertestuali tra "Artemisia" di Anna Banti e "To the Lighthouse" di Virginia Woolf.

La biofiction è un genere moderno. Nata con le Vies imaginaires di Marcel
Schwob alla fine dell’Ottocento, è letteralmente esplosa negli ultimi decenni,
anche grazie all’idea (tipicamente postmoderna) secondo cui non sarebbe
più possibile, oggi, una distinzione netta tra fact e fiction. Nella prima parte
del libro viene delineata una teoria narratologica della finzione biografica
che dimostra, tra l’altro, come la finzionalità di un testo narrativo non
dipenda necessariamente dal dire cose non vere, ma piuttosto dall’adozione
di particolari modalità enunciative o pragmatiche. La seconda parte, invece,
traccia una breve storia comparata del genere, raccontandone la lenta
emancipazione dal romanzo storico, valorizzando il carattere fondativo
di alcuni modelli (Io, Claudio di Robert Graves, Memorie di Adriano di
Marguerite Yourcenar, La morte di Virgilio di Hermann Broch) e seguendo gli
sviluppi più recenti nella letteratura francofona (Michon, Mertens, Carrère,
Echenoz) e anglofona (Burgess, Coetzee). Un rilievo particolare viene dato,
per la prima volta, alle scritture biofinzionali italiane, da Antonio Tabucchi e
Claudio Magris a Michele Mari, Nanni Balestrini, Bruno Arpaia, Alessandro
Zaccuri, Tommaso Pincio, Davide Orecchio, Antonio Scurati e altri.

Anna Banti (Lucia Lopresti) has received attention primarily for her historical fiction and literary work. However, throughout her life, she published art historical studies and critique that have fallen through the cracks of academic research. This paper explores her writings, from her earliest essays for the Italian art historical journal "L'Arte" to the last work published during her lifetime, "Quando anche le donne si misero a dipingere." I propose that her contributions to the field and her desire to publish outside of strict academic circles reveal the constrictive atmosphere of early 20th century Italian academia and the lifetime Banti spent living in her husband's oppressive shadow.

The essay offers some theoretical-critical reflections on Anna Banti’s Science Fiction, mainly considered secondary in the overall critical evaluation of the author. In the wake of more general perspectives offered by Gender Studies - however not overwhelming in the economy of textual analysis - a point of contact between Bantian feminism and Science Fiction will be traced in the first part of the essay. The discussion will then focus on the analysis of the short story Le donne muoiono, highlighting the message of social criticism, relevant for both male and female readers.

Los estudios del trauma o Trauma Studies son una tendencia relativamente reciente dentro de los estudios literarios, que configuran una hibridación entre teoría psicoanalítica, neurociencia y crítica literaria, y encuentran en Cathy Caruth una de sus principales teóricas. Una teoría que está cobrando importancia en la actualidad, y que conoció un gran impulso tras las guerras mundiales y el Holocausto, con los testimonios de soldados y supervivientes convertidos en la trama de las novelas. El trauma es la historia de una herida que sangra para hacernos conscientes de una realidad inaccesible de otro modo, pues como explica Freud la experiencia traumática se encuentra en el difuso límite del saber y del no saber. Teniendo en cuenta esto, y la distinción realizada por Pierre Janet entre memoria narrativa y memoria traumática analizaremos la obra de Anna Banti, centrándonos especialmente en su obra “Artemisia”, que relata la vida de la artista florentina Artemisia Gentileschi, y sus obras autobiográficas “La camicia bruciata” y “Un grido lacerante”. La obra de Anna Banti, una de las principales voces de la literatura italiana del siglo XX, es fruto de su formación como historiadora del arte, con especial atención al detalle y con gran habilidad para la descripción de los ambientes. Siguiendo la estela de Virginia Woolf, Anna Banti realiza una particular configuración de la novela histórica, al estilo de Manzoni, imbricada con vivencias personales y situándose en el complejo binomio autoficción/autobiografía. Il contributo analizza l’opera di Anna Banti come macrostruttura complessa in cui l’autrice sperimenta diverse tipologie narrative sfidando l’unità della forma racconto. Il passaggio sperimentale attraverso la parzialità dei modelli narrativi è determinato dalle variazioni del paesaggio urbano, dispositivo simbolico e strutturale che cambia in funzione delle modalità enunciative. Sottoposta a uno sguardo lirico e deformante, la città di Venezia diventa metafora di una parola letteraria nuova, che resiste all’oblio del tempo e restituisce visibilità ad una presenza femminile rimossa e offesa dalla Storia.

“Culture is the context within which we need to situate the self, for it is only by virtue of the interpretations, orientations and values provided by culture that we can formulate our identities, say ‘who we are’, and ‘where we are coming from.’” (Benhabib, 2000:18)

From C.S. Lewis to James White, Northern Irish and Irish fiction is best known for its imagined histories, futures, and alternate realities. However, speculative fiction from ethnic minority writers have been notably absent from the literary canon. While the island of Ireland has continued to grow more culturally diverse in the 21st century, there has been little engagement with how the cultural identity of Northern Ireland and Ireland has been transformed through immigration.

Ulster University welcomes all interested individuals and groups to the Books Beyond Boundaries NI Conference. This two day conference will discuss how speculative art shapes our understanding of cultural identity, and how Northern Ireland and Ireland can benefit from diversifying and decolonizing our community.

Keynote speeches from Nandi Jola and Mamobo Ogoro will support diverse research from academics and activists alike, with presentations ranging from speculative linguistics, to folklore and fairy tales, to Afrofuturism in art. Il Risorgimento nello specchio narrativo di due autori "fuori squadro": Luciano Bianciardi e Anna Banti, Grandi scrittori, diversi per ambiente e scelte di vita, di discontinua fortuna letteraria, scrivono entrambi,-con accenti che meritano di essere messi a confronto per temi, scrittura, punto di vista-le memorie "autobiografiche" di patrioti risorgimentali, dietro le quali si coglie una lettura del presente e del rapporto tra illusioni e realtà. Attraverso le riflessioni dei rispettivi protagonisti sul loro posto nella Storia, i due autori si interrogano sulla funzione della scrittura. Ma forse va spiegato l'accostamento, insolito e costruito, forse in modo eclettico sulla convergenza dei contenuti con il tema del Risorgimento: periodo ancora controverso, in cui le storiografie raggiungono interpretazioni opposte. Fu un bene per l'Italia? Si fece davvero l'Italia? E quale Italia sarebbe uscita da un processo unitario policentrico, federalista o, come qualcuno azzarda, promosso dai Borboni del regno di Napoli, quindi alimentato dal sud? Se non possiamo soffermarci sulla storia controfattuale, possiamo però registrare una grande attenzione narrativa alla tema della nascita della nazione e al vaglio critico della sua stagione eroica.

Even today, after over 40 years since her death, we can find rare marks of Banti’s presence in histories of Italian literature even though such marks consider only Banti as an author and not her role as an active key player in the Italian cultural context.

From this perspective, starting from the letters stored in Fondazione Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori in Milan, we will try to highlight how deeply Anna Banti has been connected with the cultural debate of those years thanks to the role she assumed in the journal 'Paragone'. Indeed, as critic with her reviews in "Paragone", she will establish a specific idea of literary theory based on what she calls "umanesimo" by using examples of Woolf, Colette and Manzoni and, on the other hand, as editor, she will organize the journal's editorial activity and promote specific authors in the Italian cultural scene.

Anna Banti, appreciated by literary critics more than her public, was consigned to living in the shadows of her husband, Roberto Longhi, also because of her choice to become a writer after her studies as an art historian. Her narrative has been labelled because of her gender – and hence forcefully distorted as feminist – and because of her literary genre, being her an author of autobiographical writings, prose of art, and historical novels, and finally defined as ‘involuntarily pertaining to Novecentism’ by Cesare Garboli during the last conference on her work (Cfr. "L’opera di Anna Banti"). Even today, after over 40 years since her death, we can find rare marks of Banti’s presence in histories of Italian literature (we should open a debate about the canonization of Italian women writers even nowadays in the 21st century), even though such marks consider only Banti’s narrative production and not her role – as editor in chief of the journal ‘Paragone’ – as an active key player in the Italian cultural context dynamics of the 20th century.

In this perspective, starting from Banti’s first short story ‘Barbara e la morte’ recently rediscovered by Fausta Garavini and Laura Desideri, we will try to highlight how deeply Anna Banti was connected with the cultural debate of those years, and her participation to novel changes in the 20thcentury according to national and extra national dynamics as the intersections between different arts and the presence of multiple narrative voices and the reutilization of phenomenon in novels.

Anna Banti’s most famous novel Artemisia (1947) is dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – after 1654), an Italian Baroque painter. Banti’s work is the first of numerous literary interpretations of Gentileschi’s life and art. The Italian author, born Lucia Lopresti (1895–1985), was married to a famous art historian, Roberto Longhi, and an art historian herself. The paper focuses on the traces of her education in art history and sensibility in Artemisia.
