This contribution aims at exploring Sophia Loren's "star persona" in the years between 1951, when the actress signs her first contract with Carlo Ponti, and 1968, when she has her first baby with the producer, who she had married in 1957 by proxy in Messico. By examining the roles she embodies on the big screen as well as her public image, I will try to unfold Loren's complex star image, where the recurring motifs – narrative as well as iconographic – of the siren, Cinderella and Pygmalion are interwoven to a multifaceted idea of femininity, uncertain between tradition and transgression.

Starting from the multifaceted figure of the flâneuse and drawing on the idea of cinema as an "atlas of emotions" suggested by Giuliana Bruno, this essay aims at discussing the body of work of the Italian filmmaker Marina Spada as an example of the mise-en-scène of a changing yet strong feminine identity, able to redefine the spaces it crosses according to a newly invented geography of feelings.

The images from Silvio Soldini's films often move along roads and motorways, on unusual and bumpy paths that cross undefined places and boundaries: rough itineraries and spaces which are nonetheless open to the possible, and which involve in particular female characters, more open to accept the challenge of a precarious and unstable existence which is however more vital precisely because it is unexpected.

The figure of Marie Epstein is slowly coming to light. Despite the fact that her work has been shadowed by the three male figures that dominated her life – her brother Jean, the director Jean Benoit-Levy and Henri Langlois – she is now regaining the place that she deserves in the history of French cinema, mostly thanks to the seminal work written by Sally Flitterman-Lewis. My research aims at deepening the exploration of the whole range of Marie’s activity on film as scriptwriter, director and archivist, through the archival sources available at the Cinematheque Francaise. The first step of this exploration – which will be the core of this intervention - consists in closely examining Marie’s work as a scenarist. It is known that she wrote three scripts for her brother’s films: L’Affiche (1924), Le Double Amour (1925) and Six et Demi Onze (1927). If in the first one, according to the archival sources as well as to what Marie herself recalls – but the accountability of her declar...

The Merlin act of 1958 sanctioned the closing of all «case chiuse», or brothels, thus generating a debate that addressed the issue of the control of feminine sexuality. Film narrative of that period reinterprets the topic through a dynamic – explored here in two study cases – that places in tension the representation of those «places of pleasure» and of discipline − brothels and prisons – open towards the exterior, in a movement that seems to generate unexpected spaces of freedom linked to the relationships between women, but which often ends by closing those openings and relegating women to the dominance of the male gaze.

In the films of Max Ophuls the representation of money and the dichotomies it calls into question (luxury vs poverty, to own vs to be owned) are strictly connected with the representation of the female figure and – in particular – its role in the dynamics of the gaze. Woman is often seen as an object of exchange, as well as money is: a body to be sold, be it within the logic of the bourgeois marriage (The Bartered Bride, Die Komodie om Geld, Caught) or within the ruthless mechanism of spectacle (La signora di tutti, Divine, Lola Montès).
In this regard, one of the best examples is Caught, where, if the plot is run by greed, woman becomes a luxury object to be owned; the female protagonist is – at the level of both the plot and the representation – at the mercy of the two men that desire her, so much that she’s hardly ever the subject of the gaze; she’s the perfect object to be looked at, as Ophuls’ mise-en-scène underlines with considerable awareness. Things become even more serious in Lola Montès: she too is an object of commercial exploitation, a silent body exhibited for money; but here the representation takes a step forward and makes the character become opaque, literally taking the film away from the spectator’s gaze, in a mise-en-scène that puts into question both the net of gazes inside the film and the structure of narrative film itself.

Recent studies have brought to light the relevance of corporeity in Jean Epstein’s theory of film (Wall-Romana, Pitarch-Fernandez). Those new readings go together with the publication of the previously unknown essay Epstein wrote in the Thirties, Ganymède, essai sur l’éthique homosexuelle masculine and, by consequence, with the taking into account of the director’s homosexuality, and call for an interpretation of his film focused on the presence (or absence) of feminine bodies. Moreover, the fact that Jean’s sister, Marie, played a major, if often disregarded, role in the films the director made in the Twenties, adds an additional and stimulating perspective.
The main issues at stake are: which is the role played by the female body in those films? How do they approach, both thematically and stylistically, the presence of a feminine gaze? And does Marie’s strong presence as actress and scriptwriter change anything? Assuming that Marie’s role has been prominent, how do the two Epstein posit themselves in front of the heterosexual norm? Can it be said that they adopt a feminine and/or queer point of view?
