Generally, it is extensively and gradually more acknowledged that urbanization is a predictable happening. However, in Yemen for instance, the early nineties union between North and South Yemen, as well as the returning of the warhorse after the second Gulf war in 1991 have created many squatter settlement that lack basic amenities. These type of settlements have produced degrading impacts on the environment, social interactions, and the economy of the urban areas. The land delivery system lacks the normal procedures which stray away from legal framework resulting in bureaucratic and dishonest practices. These in turn lead to illegal procedures, land speculation, imperfect market distribution, illegal and/or squatter settlements with poor infrastructure and service provision. Also, illegal revenue collection that hinders economic development of the towns. Hence, this study centre on squatter settlements that are initiated in Almemdarah neighbourhood, in Aden City, Yemen. Aden has experienced drastic squatter population growth since the returning of expatriates of the Gulf War from neighbouring countries, resulting in an increase of over 88% within the period of 1994 to 2001. Since then, the squatter population has steadily increased. A survey was carried out to collect relevant data and information from 780 recorded inhabitants of a section of Aden City squatter settlement, Almemdarah with a working sample of 118 households. The findings indicated that in terms of physical impacts, Almemdarah residents are experiencing inefficient infrastructure facilities and services with the lack of opportunities to renovate or modify their living conditions. Due to their limited financial abilities, the residents are unable to improve their quality of living. Clearly, the impacts of the squatter settlements have contributed in poor health and living environment. It is imperative for the Yemen government to step into the matter and initiate a restructuring approach to improve the living conditions of the residents.

A report for MSc Planning Studio at the School of HBP, USM, Malaysia.
In the midst of rapid urbanization of this country, there still exist areas which can be considered as remote and “inaccessible” and at times are far from being connected to the urbanization process. Despite rigorous planning and development efforts, some of these places and the people in them seems unaffected by the development processes or remain status quo. That raises the questions on the most appropriate way to approach such places and people. Does a planner, equipped with sophisticated techniques and analytical tools is welcomed as an agent of change? Or do we let the nature to take it courses and opt to do nothing as a planner? How, then, do we solve the planning issues and problems of such scenarios? What are the characteristics of sustainable planning in areas supposed to have already being sustained throughout the years? These are some of the questions posed as challenges to planners and decision makers alike.

Street trading is a major portion of informal sector activities which employ the vast majority of low-income people. In Malaysia, this activity is recognized by the society and authorities although at times it has been regarded as a problem since hawkers are perceived to clutter up streets, create traffic congestion and are deemed unhygienic. Today, the range of facilities has improved markedly with the support of the authorities. Hawkers have been provided with stalls, complexes, trading sites and other facilities that help to boost their participation. Nonetheless, street hawkers remain as one of the salient features of the ever changing urban environment. Despite efforts to relocate hawkers into centralized locations, street hawkers are still in existence and at times creating many difficulties to the authorities to deal with, though their contributions to the urban environment in terms supplying various types of goods at affordable prices are undeniable. Hence, it is imperative to discuss their sustainability in the urban environment in regards to their roles in the community.
This paper will look into the issues of street hawkers’ sustainability in George Town, Pulau Pinang based on a survey of sampled street hawkers (20 percent of 2813 hawkers) in 2010. In addition, opinions from the public (hawker customers and residents surrounding hawker selling locations) are recorded and examined through the use of questionnaires. Data are also collected through interviews of local authority councillors. Related discussions will touch upon the sustainable strategies employed by hawkers, their roles as business entities and supplier of demanded goods to the public and the policies of local authority towards their existence, all of which are crucial for them  to cope, survive and sustain the urban environment.
It is found that street hawkers are involved in this activity for a long period of time making it a full life time occupation while hawking is treated as the main income generator for their households. Undoubtedly, street hawkers have a vital role in the urban economy as the supplier of cheap goods, in particular cooked food, to the public while maintaining its importance as a channel of multi retailers that are available in most urban environment today, behaving like supermarkets or department stores though at a lower level. Local authority policies and actions affect the survival and sustainability of street hawkers. Despite the supportive measures being practiced by the MPPP (Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang or Pulau Pinang City Council) two important aspects of the policy is found to be crucial to ensure the sustainability of street hawkers namely the licensing and formalizing of these hawkers. Efforts should be embedded in the council policy towards street hawkers to license them to guarantee a more effective monitoring practices in the future. Relocating these hawkers in the attempt to formalize their activities should also be carried out with greater attention to the needs and demands of the public who apprechiate the accessible and convenient locations of street hawkers to their residents.

Due to urbanization most of the people around the world live in big cities and urban areas. Whereas the population growth causes loss of green and natural spaces as an environmental problem, people’s needs for places to refresh and to make better their physical and psychological health and well-being increases. Just as access to neighborhood parks and recreational facilities in housing areas has a strong relationship with people’s perception of safety, regulatory agencies, planners and urban designers should have a growing awareness and experience about sustainable development and consider the capacity of the built environment to decrease both the fear of crime and the potential for offending by recognizing the importance of providing safe green spaces in urban areas. The main purpose of this study is to find the differences in perception of crime and fear of crime in the neighborhood area in terms of three factors of gender, age and ethnic background. It also identifies the current level of safety in a neighborhood from the view point of respondents.

The human relationship with the natural world is deeply interlaced with the human conscious and subconscious mind and therefore it is not easy to analyze. This paper presents a historical and critical review of psychological benefits on children when they view natural features or being in natural settings. The aim of this paper is to examine the psychological benefits of the natural environment on children that might suggest more general design principles of children’s environment. The literature review of publication linking the types of benefits children derive from being in a “natural” setting was conducted. The results of the review include an overview of the types of natural settings, the evidence on psychological benefit effects. Consequently children have to remain in contact with nature in their life to maintain good mental health. Disregarding landscaping by city officials may dispossess inner city children of a much needed resource for the psychological capacities that lead to a brighter and sustainable future.

Urban populations have rapidly grown and imagination has been done through more facilities and services to cities after industrial revolution. This has caused to emerge a lot issues in urban form through uncontrolled growth. As urban form is known one of main urban design elements and urban design has played main role in protection and evolution of urban identity through recognizing of local distinctive symbols. Basically, urban design has focused on environmental characterizes and local identity of cities. Beside, Landuse map is last production of Landuse planning and urban design first phase. So, people volitions are appeared physically that is urban design base. Thus, Landuse can play main role in physical identity through cities forming and it is efficient instrument for urban management. This paper identifies elements of urban physical identity and further examines Landuse planning and making of cities physical identity in Iran.

Political participation within a society takes variuos forms and shapes. It can be initiated by a mere verbal comment towards the authorities or governments to involving in legal or illegal protestings. One of the most fundamental forms of participating is voting. Although it is not as demanding as other forms of participation, it is likely the most frequent form of participation and the basis of legitimacy for all modern democracies (Shapiro and Winters, 2008). As such it is the intention of this section to study the interrelationships between the act of voting and the individual life satisfaction in present day. By using the basis of Pilihanraya Umum Dewan Undangan Negeri Pulau Pinang, 2008, a survey  of 254 respondents was deployed to seek the responses from various categories of people in the Seberang Perai Districts towards their voting patterns in relation to the present life satisfcation. Life satisfaction here is used quite loosely to mean the general satisfaction in life as the basis used in the Quality of Life  (QoL) Index Measurement. Life satisfaction is also referred to by some scholars as (individual) happiness or (subjective) well-being (see for examples Shapiro and Winters, 2008 or Flavin and Keane, 2008).
The orientation of this section is geared towards the identification and discussion of the respondents voting patterns in lieu of the extraordinary 2008 General Election (GE) results in the Seberang Perai Districts. It is an attempt to establsih some linkages that may exist between the voting patterns among the households and selected indicators of the QoL. It is postulated that the change in governance in some areas during the election may or may not be associated with changing life satisfaction among some quarters. Research results may be used by munnicipal authorities to raise awareness on wide-ranging QoL issues, as well as to stimulate grass roots and stakeholders participation and involvement towards improving the QoL, vis-à-vis, life satisfaction in general.
