Distance education has the potential to contribute to the enhancement of women’s development by overcoming not only temporal and spatial barriers but familial commitments as well. It brings education to their home and allows women to learn at their individual pace, seek skills for individual development and at the same time, enables them to fulfill family responsibilities. An important element of distance education is the provision of the learner support system that provides students the access to learning resources and means of communication that would facilitate the array of educational activities and exposure to various other guidance and advisories. This paper reports on the study undertaken to elucidate the dimensions of the support system provided by the School of Distance Education (SDE), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to its women learners that would have significant impact on their achievements. The factorial analysis conducted revealed that the role of the faculty is the ...

This study is undertaken to elucidate various aspects of the self-transitional characteristics of learners enrolled in the distance education programmes at Universiti Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi MARA (formerly known as Institut Teknologi Mara). The aspects of the self-transitional characteristics studied included study skills, recreational activities, health, finance, and religious activities. The findings of this study will provide distance education institutions with information regarding the characteristics of the self-transition experienced by adults as a result of becoming distance education learners. Such information is important for the institution in order to provide an adequate and suitable support system for learners in distance education that takes into account the self-transition that occurs among them in order to facilitate and assist them the learning process.

This paper reports the findings of a research conducted to evaluate the ownership and usage of technology devices within Distance Education students- according to their age. This research involved 45 Distance Education students from USM Universiti Sains Malaysia (DEUSM) as its respondents. Data was collected through questionnaire that had been developed by the researchers based on some literature review. The data was analyzed to find out the frequencies of respondents agreements towards ownership of technology devices and the use of technology devices. The findings shows that all respondents own mobile phone and majority of them reveal that they use mobile on regular basis. The student in the age 30-39 has the heist ownership of the technology devices.

One of the more noticeable developments in Malaysia over the last 30 years is the ability to deliver higher education programs and courses via distance mode. The development and evolution in Open and Distance Education (ODE) and innovations in information and communication technologies (ICT) have made access to knowledge and educational services in Malaysia more flexible as the delivery of distance programs now ranges from print to tutorial via video conferencing. Although ICT are affording distance teachers (DTs) extraordinary options and opportunities in the delivery of distance courses, realizing effective correspondence or communication and meaningful interactions appear a challenge to distance educators and learners alike. Effective distance learning dictates a shift towards a more “learner centered approach” to the teaching and learning transaction via the delivery mechanisms. This paper presents distance learners’ perspective on their learning by looking at teacher-learner li...

This study attempts to analyze and evaluate theories and design principles for design and development of Foreign Language Open Online Courses (FLOOC). The researchers mentioned about the research tools and steps which are related to the design and development process. The study proposes the implementation of connectivism theory proposed by Downes and Siemens (2005), theory of second language acquisition by Krashen (1984), theory of multimedia learning by Mayer (2001) and Gagne’s 9 events of instruction by Gagne (1985). Various subjects matter experts in foreign language, syllabus design and instructional design (ID) have participated in the study. The outcome from this research will later be used by the researcher in the design and development processes. Key-Words: Design and development, theories and design principles, foreign language, open online courses, non-native students.

This paper describes the development process of an augmented reality (AR) enhanced flashcards for non-native students of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in scaffolding the memorization and retention of basic Arabic vocabulary through the inclusion of personalized learning using an application known as Aurasma. The study involved 24 elementary-level students in USIM and data collection was conducted by observing the students’ response and understanding in using the AR enhanced flashcards for personalized Arabic vocabulary learning. Findings indicated that the AR enhanced flashcards help in scaffolding the knowledge regarding the Arabic vocabulary learning. Furthermore, the findings showed that the AR enhanced flashcards facilitate ...

Research education evolves day by day and has offers many new techniques to impart information and knowledge. One of the important discussions nowadays is ubiquitous engagement activities for students; learning in innovative ways. Hence the introduction of mobile applications as innovative ubiquitous engaging teaching and learning method. This review examined articles on mobile apps for teaching and learning at schools and up to higher institutions. A content analysis was used to analyse successful factors for teaching and learning via mobile applications. This review found that mobile apps improve knowledge accessibility, engagement of students, varieties of options, borderless education and yet allow collaborative between students and teachers. Furthermore, this paper gives insights on some items to be considered when developing mobile apps for T&L.

In essence, research is about gathering facts, increasing our knowledge and understanding, and providing us with the information needed to answer our queries, for problem solving and decision making. The enculturation research is crucial so that it becomes a natural process of enquiry that can (assist us to) update information, help gather information, curb mis-information, fake news and unsubstantiated statements; a way to prove lies and to support truths. So, there exist the elements of research in our daily lives. This short contribution seeks to demystify the essence of research such that it becomes a daily practise.
