This paper presents a novel approach to mulberry crop protection. Linear and multiple regression models were fitted to predict and forecast the extent of infestation by leaf roller (Diaphania pulverulentalis H.) on mulberry under the prevailing weather conditions. A systematic survey for periodical recording of Percentage of Pest Incidence (PPI), pest population and crop loss caused by the pest was done for two consecutive years (September 2002 to August 2004), in 68 mulberry plots of Tumkur district (Karnataka). All the three parameters were maximum in winter season. The recorded data served as the basis for regression studies. Optimum regression model indicated the strong influence of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and relative humidity on PPI (R2 = 91.1%) and pest population (R1 = 73.6%). The linear regression implied a strong positive association (R2= 81%) between pest population and PPI. Both PPI and population density had significant negative correlation with maximum...

Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in water and zooplankton were studied along the central west coast of India to assess spatial and temporal variations. The water and zooplankton samples were collected during different seasons. They were subjected to AAS to know the metal concentrations. Results showed that zinc showed higher concentrations at the study sites while cadmium showed the least content. Anthropogenic sources did not seem to significantly influence the metal concentrations in water and zooplankton.

Water is the key substance for the survival of all living organisms. The quality of water in terms of physicochemical parameters affect the conditions for the existence of zooplankton. India is blessed with thousands of water bodies, both large and small, ranging from pond to large lakes, rivers and streams of lentic or lotic nature. Despite several studies, still a large number of them are virgin and yet to be studied. Hence studies on the diversity and seasonal abundance of zooplankton in river Sal, one of the lesser known rivers of Goa was carried out. Analyses of physicochemical parameters showed the following range: Temperature (24.5-30oC), pH (6.60-8.0), EC (17782-52845), total alkalinity (36.03-1188.33mg/l), DO (3.96-7.10mg/l), turbidity (10.35-34.12NTU), nitrates, (0.07-1.94 mg/l), phosphates (0.01-0.19 mg/l), calcium (15.76-1438 mg/l) and magnesium (1.93-240 mg/l). A total of 30 species belonging to Cladocera (10 sps.), Copepoda (9 sps.), Rotifera (9 sps.) and Ostracoda (2 ...

Since time immemorial, fishery, which helps in food security and poverty alleviation, has been one of the oldest professions of man and remained to be so, even today. Further, ornamental fisheries has also provides ample scope for improving economy and employment generation. Today, Fish culturing is a major part of aquaculture. Like in other animals, in fishes too, food determines various physiological, developmental or even reproductive aspects. So, several attempts have been made by various workers, to alter food and other environmental conditions to determine optimum growth. However, as there are hardly any attempts to analyze suitable protein requirements for having optimum health and development in fish diet, thus, an attempt has been made to determine the optimum protein requirement for the health growth and development in one of the popular aquarium angel fishes, Pterophyllus scalare by altering protein and lipid contents from 30%-40% protein and 6% -10% lipids in their feed....

Environmental conditions and zooplankton populations were studied in the nearshore waters of Colva and Karwar, along the central west coast of India to assess the spatial and temporal variations in zooplankton composition. Environmental variables (temperature, dissolved oxygen [DO], nitrates, phosphates, turbidity, total dissolved solids [TDS]) and zooplankton taxonomic abundances were studied on a monthly basis from August 2011 to May 2012. The physicochemical data was subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) to test which variables contributed significantly to changes in water conditions. The relationship between environmental variables and zooplankton density was tested using canonical correspondence analyses. Overall, zooplankton species diversity and richness were higher at Colva (35 taxa) than at Karwar (25 taxa). Variation in water quality was attributed to anthropogenic activities and freshwater input in Karwar and seasonal effects in Colva. For Karwar and Colva the p...

Spiders are ubiquitous in distribution, except for a few niches, such as Arctic and Antarctica. Almost every plant has its spider fauna, as do dead leaves, on the forest floor and on the trees during winter. They may be found at varied locations, such as under bark, beneath stones, below the fallen logs, among foliage, house dwellings, grass leaves, underground burrows etc [1]. Their success is reflected in the fact that, on our planet, there are about 45,700 recorded spider species and 114 families [2] and they could achieve this level of diversity due to their higher adaptive value apart from morphological and behavioral uniqueness [2]. They possess a pair of neurotoxin poison glands in their cephalothoraxes, which can be used as medicine and non polluting pesticide. Spiders are also known as wandering spiders, ambushing spiders, web-building spiders, commons all spiders etc., and depending upon the nature. Like most of the biological species deforestation, habitat loss due to int...

Abstract: Zooplankton is an economically and ecologically important group of aquatic animals and their ecological processes influence fishery, oceanography and climate. The pre-sent study attempts to analyse community structure and diversity of zooplankton in Andaman sea using various richness, diversity and evenness indices and similarity and resemblance functions. The results showed species richness indices (Margalef and Menhinick) hold good for zooplankton data. The evenness indices, chord distance and geodesic distance provided realis-tic values for analyzing zooplankton community structure hold good for a zooplankton data. Principal Component analysis being a multivariate eigen analysis provided a better under-standing of community in zooplankton across sites and principal components. Resumen: El zooplancton constituye un grupo de animales acuáticos con importancia ecológica y económica, y sus procesos ecológicos influyen sobre la pesquería, la oceanografía y el clima. El prese...
