This article examines some attestations of the expression «the craters of Hephaestus», which can be read in various Byzantine sources referring to the volcano Aetna. Some of these references highlight, with a decidedly negative emphasis, the remote pagan origins of this expression.

Gregory Nazianzen in the poem "de vita sua" (carm. II, 1,11, vv. 1441-1474) tells in detail a mysterious episode of his biography, when in Constantinople he granted forgiveness to a young man, perhaps a monk, who should have killed him. Nazianzen's attitude towards him was marked by a great mercy, the same that the writer had already shown towards his enemies in the previous Easter attack of 379.

In this paper I offer a new critical edition of the Encomium in s. Agatham (BHG 38) by Methodius, patriarch of Constantinople (843-847), with an Italian translation and commentary notes. This text was most likely recited in Constantinople, during the last years of Theophilus’ empire. One of the purposes of the Encomium was to promote the cult of the Sicilian martyr, and Methodius exploits “the miracle of oil” that occurred on the feast day of the saint under the eyes of all. This critical edition uses for the first time the codex Lesbiensis S. Ioannis Theologi 7, which proves invaluable for the constitutio textus.

The paper examines some passages from the poems of Gregory Nazianzen and proposes conjectures to II, 1, 45, 135 (ὀρυμαγδῷ pro ὀρυμαγδῶν vel ὀρυγμαδῶν) and II, 1, 11, 1821 (δοῦλος Sternbach pro δοῦλον). On the base of Greg. Naz. carm. II,... more

On the base of Greg. Naz. carm. II, 1, 11, 1822 ποθῶν νομάς, it is possible to emend the corrupt ποιησάμενος (Ign. Diac. epist. XL 26) in ποθήσας νομάς.
The paper examines the Sermo laudatorius of Epiphanius of Catania, held at the seventh ecumenical Council (Nicea 787) and, in particular, a series of allusions to classical mythology on the page 890,15-21 (ed. E. Lamberz, ACO, ser. II,... more
The paper examines the Sermo laudatorius of Epiphanius of Catania, held at the seventh ecumenical Council (Nicea 787) and, in particular, a series of allusions to classical mythology on the page 890,15-21 (ed. E. Lamberz, ACO, ser. II, III/3, Berlin-Boston 2016). It is possible to relate these allusions with similar references occurring in Discourses of Gregor of Nazianzus and with the mythological commentaries of the Ps.-Nonnus to these texts

The paper examines some passages of the Vitae of the Constantinopolitan
Patriarchs Ignatius (BHG 817) and Euthymius (BHG 651). It shows that,
as appears from some examples taken from the Vitae, the representation
of emotions is strictly functional to the narrative strategy of the authors,
which aims to increase the interest of readers.
The paper discusses three difficult or corrupt passages of the "Encomium of St. Agatha" (pp. 78,2-12; 80,29-35; 89,19-27 ed. Mioni) by the Patriarch of Constantinople Methodius, and some textual corrections are proposed.
The paper, focused on anger in the works of Gregory Nazianzen, especially carm. I.2.25 adversus iram, vv. 183-188; 94-110, and or. 18.25, discusses the relevant passages and emphasizes that anger is considered differently in relation to... more

This paper focuses on four Latin translations of a long poem by Gregory Nazianzen (I 2,10, de virtute). The oldest of these versions is due to the humanist Antonius Tudertinus (†1489), while the others are due to Johannes Löwenklau (1541-1594) and to Jacques de Billy (1535-1581). I examine how translators worked, emphasizing in particular the efforts of Löwenklau to adhere to the Greek text and Billius’ talent for translating into verse.

The "Verses for Easter Sunday", an important example of accentual Byzantine poetry, were written by a schoolmaster named Arsenios. They are preserved only in Vat. Gr. 207, f. 367r, transcribed by a fourteenth-century hand. I provide here, after the editions of Matranga (1850) and Kaltsogianni (2010), a new critical edition with introduction, Italian translation and commentary of this beautiful poem.

A comparison of the older bios of Gregory of Agrigento (whose critical edition was published by A. Berger in 1995) with the vita altera (BHG 708), regarding the same episode, viz. the recognition of the saint from his father Chariton. In the vita altera we can see a signifiant emphasis on the pathetic side of the narration.

A comparison of the older bios of Gregory of Agrigento (whose critical edition was published by A. Berger in 1995), §§ 53-69, with the vita altera (BHG 708), §§ 38-43, of the same saint. Both texts tell the same dramatic events in the life of the saint, but in the vita altera you can notice significant changes depending on the different cultural contexts in which they were written

Two "codices" containing many poems of Gregory Nazianzen were written in 1550 by the Greek copyist Emanuele Provataris on behalf of the Card. Cervini. One of the two "codices", «non retrouvé» in the Biblioteca Vaticana, can be identified with a manuscript sent by the Card. G. Sirleto to Jacobus Billius (Jacques de Billy, 1535-1581), which probably remained among the papers of Billius after his death.
