The three poets prove themselves faithful to the modernist aesthetics of nature’s sensorial exploration, building the multifaceted lyrical identity by using elements specific to women’s corporality and by inquiring into a wide range of emotions related to states of loneliness, sacrifice, infatuation, rebellion, and transmutation. Vision is their main tool of communication and understanding therefore the eyes - ever so present in their poems – mediate perception before it is rendered thorough emotion and rational thought.

Their presence responds to the poets need for the sacred as translated into the mystery and irrational dimension of the world. The permanent search for the identity of the lyrical persona and the passing of time marked by destruction and abandonment are two of the main themes symbolized by the mythological characters in Blandiana’s poems. Gods taking the place of other gods, all encompassed in vegetal seeds buried deep into the ground, account for the flowing of time and the history cycles of creation and destruction succeeding themselves. The quest for the mysterious essence of the world is the mission of literature for Blandiana. Recognizing what we once knew is the point of no return in poetry (Blandiana 2010, 8).

Taking his statement as the starting point of our paper, we shall approach several of Paz´s aesthetic works in order to discuss his ideas on the revealing mission of figurative language, as a means to transfigure and metamorphose words in order to reveal their magic, that is their creative power. We shall juxtapose his theory on metaphor to similar perspectives belonging to the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, to the creationist and surrealist avant-garde movements, but also to the latest cognitive poetics theories, which Paz´s view keeps a close resemblance with.

Description:
The aesthetic and discursive strand of contemporary thought has set out the transversal unification between epistemological domains (Baron, 2007), blurring the lines between science and literature. The conceptual mappings that suggest an active role of literary forms and structures in the articulation of the scientific thought, and the underlying scientific and technological references building the fictional worlds constitute an intertwined field of meaning intended to give an account of the empirical universe as part of a new humanism, called by some the third culture (Fernández Buey, 2013).
The main purpose of this congress is to approach the study of XXth and XXIst century literature from an interdisciplinary perspective in order to understand the necessity of a definite rapprochement between exact sciences and humanities. It is primarily concerned with highlighting structural analogies between scientific and literary discourse, as well as narrative patterns and metaphorical mechanisms in scientific texts. Special attention is paid to the fundamental role of literary theory as the science of literature for defending its cognitive abilities.
We invite papers coming from epistemocriticism, cognitive poetics, embodied reading theory, neuroaethetics and philosophy of the arts.
This event is also envisioned as a two-day meeting between scholars for the preparation of a monographic volume to be submitted to a major international publishing press.
