In this paper, I would like to present an analysis of the social environment of language contact in Italy exploring how historically the language policy in the era of fascism produced a complex idea of the Italian language community. I will use the notions of spatiality, glottophagy and camouflage to indicate, describe and analyse how this came to be and still is the case, and I will try to contextualize this process in the fascist history of Italy. In the second part, I will focus on the relationship between language, space and society as represented in Italian cinema, unpacking the relationships between fascism and Italian language policy and the language structured by socioeconomic and cultural conflicts. Discussing the language structure in three cinematic cases, I want to demonstrate how Italian cinema has interpreted the relationship between different languages and conflict in the repertoire in the moment when social conflict started to be filmed by some film directors at the ...

This article aims to focus on two main aspects of Rome urban space vision and representation through Ettore Scola’s filmography: on the one hand, we try to decode the interconnections between languages and cinematic architectural space and, on the other hand, we intend to disclose how Scola meant to create a connection between his personal cinematic narrative and the tangled urban space in the city of Rome. Our investigation is mainly focused on the so called “urban village” Palazzo Federici, a town within the city, which is the A Special Day and The Story of a Poor Young Man’s main location. Palazzo Federici is an architectural complex of 400 dwellings designed by architect Mario De Renzi and built between 1931 and 1937; it is an ideal place to describe a hive shape building, with a squared structure inspired to a small fortified town, with a central courtyard and an empty fountain, that can represent the different faces of the suffocating fascist regime. The interrelation between ...

In this article, I present a preliminary investigation on the cinematic interpretation of multilingual urban space in contemporary Italy. More specifically, I focus on the representation of the relationship between sociolinguistic reality, social space and marginalization in four films which cover almost 20 years of Italian cinema and which deal with the current migration situation: Zora la vampira (Manetti Bros., 2000); Cover boy. L'ultima rivoluzione (C. Amoroso, 2007); Alì ha gli occhi azzurri (C. Giovannesi, 2012) and Bangla (P. Bhuiyan, 2019). I will try to reflect on the strategies the directors of these films use to describe migration and the conflict of the second generation of immigrants and on how they represent their identities and their bodies in connection with the role of language varieties in urban spatiality. This article focuses on the complex structures created by the relationships between spoken language varieties in the cinematographic representation of social space. More specifically, it aims to describe how the recent Italian cinema is representing the sociolinguistic urban reality and how some films express the radical change that has taken place during the last two decades in the Italian urban and socio-linguistic context, with a particular reference to migration and marginalization.

Abstract. Cinematic insults. The films of the 60's In this article, focusing on Italian films of the 60's, I would like to present the first results of a wider research project on the use of insults in the Italian cinema. Starting from La dolce vita (1960) and some of the most famous and important films of the decade, such as Accattone, Mamma Roma and Rocco e i suoi fratelli, I will try to show how cinematic insults follow the evolution of the Italian society and culture. In other words, my analysis stresses out that the interpretation of the significative changes occurred in the shift from tradition to modernity are reflected in moral behavior and taboos. To do that, I will focus on some particular taboos about sexuality, family and gender and on the insults connected to these taboos, and on their representation in the new neorealist drama films and comedy films, the so called "commedia all'italiana".

In this paper, I analyze how the urban space and identity are represented in the multilingualism of the new Italian cinema. Specifically, I focus on the film Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot (They call me Jeeg), 2015 by Gabriele Mainetti. The film is an intelligent and successful combination of different cinematic genres and depicts a contemporary image of the city of Rome, highlighting its linguistic and human contradictions and complexity.
The main characters – Enzo, Alessia, lo Zingaro - and their language are comic, tragic and grotesque; the constellation of anthropological and linguistic super-diversities represented in this Roman urban space is embedded in a labyrinth of streets and squares, dirty and violent carousels and they are signs of the different languages, colors and the magnetism of language varieties. This magic neorealism, combined with expressionist and grotesque metaphors of our contemporary society, is situated within a context of complex stratified architecture, where the real urban environment symbolizes a dangerous and fantastic city.
