The susceptibility of sparrows (Passer domesticus) and strains of mice (Swiss, BALB/c, C-57 and DB-A) to Lawsonia intracellularis infection was studied. Thirty-two sparrows were inoculated with pure culture of L. intracellularis and eleven received sham inoculum. Feces were collected on -1, 7, 14 and 21 days post infection (dpi) for detection of L. intracellularis by PCR. After 21 days, all sparrows were euthanized and the tissues processed for histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). One hundred sixty mice of four different strains (n=40, per strain) were used. For each mouse strain, 16 animals received mucosa homogenate from a pig infected with L. intracellularis, 16 received pure culture of L. intracellularis and eight animals received sham inoculum. Two control and four inoculated mice from each group were euthanized on 7, 14, 21 and 28 dpi. Sections of intestine were collected for histologic analysis and IHC and pooled feces were collected for L. intracellularis PCR. None of t...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of connexin 32 (Cx 32) during remyelination of the peripheral nervous system, through a local injection of either 0,1% ethidium bromide solution or saline in the sciatic nerve of Cx 32 knockout mice. Euthanasia was performed ranging from 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 to 30 days after injection. Histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopical techniques were used to analyze the development of the lesions. Within the sciatic nerves, Schwann cells initially showed signs of intoxication and rejected their sheaths; after seven days, some thin newly formed myelin sheaths with uneven compactness and redundant loops (tomacula) were conspicuous. We concluded that the regeneration of lost myelin sheaths within the PNS followed the pattern already reported for this model in other laboratory species. Therefore, these results suggest that absence of Cx 32 did not interfere with the normal pattern of remyelination ...

Background : Intravascular lymphoma (IL) is a rare disease characterized by presence of neoplastic lymphocytes in the lumen of blood vessels. Any tissue can be affected; however, the most frequently compromised areas of the body are the skin and the central nervous system (CNS). The clinical signs and macroscopic alterations caused by IL are nonspecific and are usually secondary to a continuous proliferative disorder, which leads to occlusion of the blood vessels with consequent thrombosis, hemorrhage and infarction. The objective of this work is to report a case of IL in a dog. Case : An 8-year-old male Rottweiler dog was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Parana with a history of cerebellar ataxia that had not improved after treatment. At the neurological examination, cerebellar ataxia and deficit of nasal reflex were detected. A complete blood count showed presence of slight anemia (4.8 million red blood cells/mm 3 ; normal ranges= 5.5-8.5 million/mm...

ABSTRACT This study investigated the adjuvant potential of W/O/W multiple emulsions and microemulsions, comparing them with traditional aluminum hydroxide and oil-in-water emulsion adjuvants against bluetongue vaccine (BTV). Local inflammatory reactions were assessed in rabbits by measuring the temperature of the animals and the skin thickness at the site of application. Antibodies titers were determined by serum-neutralization test. Histological analyses of lesions at the site of adjuvants application were done. Results showed that multiple emulsion and microemulsion maintained their stability even in the presence of complex components and presented adequate characteristics for subcutaneous administration. They were able to induce immune response against BTV, but it was smaller than the traditional adjuvants. Despite microemulsion adjuvant showed lower antibodies titre, it was easier to prepare more stable at 4°C and it was the only one that did not induce any local reaction.

ABSTRACT Three female Weimaraner pups had generalized and rhythmic body tremors since the first week of age. The remaining two male littermates were unaffected. One 4-week-old female was euthanatized and necropsied. On gross examination, poor demarcation between the gray and white matter was observed. Microscopically, there was severe hypomyelination of the brain compatible with congenital hypomyelinogenesis reported in dogs.
