Deep-seated tumors can be treated by minimally invasive interstitial ultrasound thermal therapy. A miniature transducer emitting high-intensity acoustic waves is placed in contact with the targeted area to induce local thermal necrosis. Accurate positioning of the probe and treatment monitoring must be achieved for the technique to be effective. A piezocomposite technology was used for obtaining both high-quality imaging and effective treatment with the same transducer. Prototypes were designed and built to be compatible with an endoscopic approach for treating cholangiocarcinomas in the biliary ducts. The transducer had dimensions of 2.5 x 7.5 mm(2), it was cylindrically focused at 10 mm and it was operated at a center frequency of 11 MHz. Amaç: 2007 - 2015 yılları arasında arazide karşılaşılan, hakkında kısıtlı da olsa veriler edinilen memelilere ilişkin bilginin paylaşılması mevcut çalışmanın amacını teşkil etmektedir. Bu veriler, fotoğraflar, kısmen düzenli olarak kaydedilmiş veriler ve kısa notlar olarak sunulmuştur. Bildiriye numaralandırılmış bir isim verilmesi sayesinde çalışmaların tekrarlı hale getirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır.
    Gereçler ve Yöntemler: Çalışma kapsamında, karşılaşılmış 9 memeli organizmanın (Sciurus vulgaris, Sus scrofa, Vulpes vulpes, Martes sp., Tursiops truncatus, bir Chiroptera üyesi, Erinaceus concolor, Lutra lutra ve Meles meles), 3 ilde (Aydın, Denizli ve Muğla) bulundukları yerler harita üzerinde gösterilmiş, karşılaşma tarihleri, koordinatları, bulunuş şekilleri ve birey sayıları kaydedilmiştir. Ayrıca her organizmaya ait görsellerle çalışma zenginleştirilmiştir. İhbarlarla gelen bilgiler sayesinde veriler desteklenmiştir. Aktif saha çalışmalarının gerçekleştirilmesinde hem profesyonel fotoğraf makinalarından hem de fotokapan kullanım yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır.
    Sonuç: Çalışmanın çıktıları değerlendirildiğinde, türlerin bulunuşlarının zorluğu dikkat çekmektedir. Ayrıca Meles meles gibi bazı türlerin ölü olarak bulunması gibi sorunların varlığı göze çarpmaktadır. Bu bakış açısı geliştirildiğinde, ülkemizde yapılacak kapsamlı mamalojik çalışmaların önemi ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmalara ait sonuçların, söz konusu organizmalarla iç içe yaşam süren yöre insanları ile paylaşılması bilim insanlarının yükümlülüğüdür.

Zinc (Zn) is essential for swine and poultry and native Zn concentrations in feedstuffs are too low to meet their Zn requirement. Dietary Zn bioavailability is affected by phytate, phytase and Zn supplemented in organic form is considered as more bioavailable than inorganic sources. A meta-analysis using GLM procedures was processed using broiler and piglet databases to investigate, within the physiological response of Zn, (1) the bioavailability of inorganic and organic Zn sources (Analysis I); (2) the bioavailability of native and inorganic Zn dependent from dietary phytates, vegetal and supplemental phytase activity (Analysis II). Traumatic injury is a leading cause of death worldwide for people between 5 and 44 y of age, and it accounts for 10% of all deaths. The incidence of acute lung injury, a life-threatening complication in severely injured trauma patients remains between 30% and 50%. This study describes an experimental protocol of volume-controlled hemorrhage in Landrace-Large White swine. The experimental approach simulated the clinical situation associated with hemorrhagic shock in the trauma patient while providing controlled conditions to maximize reproducibility. The duration of the protocol was 8 h and was divided into 5 distinct phases-stabilization, hemorrhage, maintenance, resuscitation, and observation-after which the swine were euthanized. Lung tissue samples were analyzed histologically. All swine survived the protocol. Classical swine fever (CSF) remains one of the most important transboundary viral diseases of swine worldwide. The causative agent is CSF virus, a small, enveloped RNA virus of the genus Pestivirus. Based on partial sequences, three genotypes can be distinguished that do not, however, directly correlate with virulence. Depending on both virus and host factors, a wide range of clinical syndromes can be observed and thus, laboratory confirmation is mandatory. To this means, both direct and indirect methods are utilized with an increasing degree of commercialization. Both infections in domestic pigs and wild boar are of great relevance; and wild boars are a reservoir host transmitting the virus sporadically also to pig farms. Non-native mammals are major drivers of ecosystem change and biodiversity loss; this is especially apparent on islands. However, techniques exist to remove non-native mammals, providing a powerful conservation tool. Conservation practitioners are now targeting larger islands for restoration. Leveraging existing and developing new techniques and technologies will prove critical to successful eradications on large islands. Using the removal of introduced goats (Capra hircus) from Santiago Island, Galápagos as a case study, we present a suite of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools that aid island conservation actions. GIS tools were incorporated into the three phases of the eradication campaign: planning, hunting, and monitoring. Further, these tools were adopted for three eradication techniques: ground-based hunting, aerial hunting by helicopter, and Judas goats. These geographic approaches provide a foundation for statistical, spatial, and economic analyses that should increase the capability and efficiency of removal campaigns. Given limited conservation funds and the dire status of many insular species, efficiently removing non-native mammals from islands is of paramount global conservation importance.

The AcuNav-catheter is a vector-phased array ultrasound catheter that has shown great utility for both diagnosis and electrophysiological interventions. To test the feasibility of limited catheter reuse and to ensure that reprocessed catheters would produce acceptable clinical images, the present study compared the 2-D and Doppler image quality, as determined by clinical assessment, with the catheter's functional status as determined by the FirstCall 2000 transducer tester. Reprocessed catheters from four functional categories, two acceptable and two unacceptable, were used to collect images, 2-D and Doppler, from a porcine heart. The images were blinded and then rated by clinical evaluation. El análisis de traumas en restos óseos humanos implica el estudio de trazas, es decir que se observa el resultado de conductas pasadas, constituyéndose en evidencia indirecta. Algunas marcas óseas pueden ser el resultado de la aplicación de una fuerza en un área grande de impacto causada por elementos duros de superficie obtusa o roma, como piedras, garrotes, boleadoras o martillos. Los diferentes elementos efectores provocarían diversas improntas o patrones traumáticos identificables a través de variables.
Estas marcas son también conocidas como lesiones contundentes. La investigación y el análisis de este tipo de lesiones en restos óseos permitirá abordar con mayor profundidad contextos forenses que han sido catalogados como violentos, ya que abundan las evidencias que dan cuenta de situaciones conflictivas.
En ámbitos forenses se encuentran con frecuencia restos óseos en los cuales se pueden observar dichas marcas, donde la asociación entre ellas y el objeto que la realizó no está claramente establecida. En este sentido, es necesario generar marcos de referencia que permitan establecer relaciones probabilísticas entre la marca y el efector. Los estudios experimentales tienen el potencial de ofrecer tal marco de referencia. Sin embargo, los antecedentes experimentales son escasos en nuestro país, particularmente aquellos cuyo efector es de naturaleza contundente.
Desde una perspectiva experimental, este trabajo se basó en la producción de lesiones contundentes a 21 cráneos de cerdo (Sus scrofa) con diferentes elementos y su posterior análisis y comparación con lesiones encontradas en restos bioarqueológicos. El análisis de variables relevadas en el material experimental se realizó mediante métodos estadísticos uni y multivariados. Finalmente, se aplicó fotogrametría, una técnica novedosa para el registro digital de estas marcas.
Se consiguió diferenciar las marcas dejadas en cráneos de cerdo con diferentes elementos contundentes mediante las variables métricas y categóricas evaluadas. A su vez, se logró asociar categorías de marcas con categorías de golpes, según la magnitud de la fuerza aplicada y la tensión generada.
Los resultados son relevantes para las ciencias forenses, dado que aportan información para la determinación de la causa de muerte, la reconstrucción de la mecánica de las lesiones y el estudio de la dinámica de los hechos sucedidos.

Cranial blunt force trauma is of major concern in forensic sciences. The aim of this study is to shed light on cranial bone trauma caused by blunt weapons from an experimental perspective. The experimentation involved the production of blunt injuries to 21 pig skulls with different objects: metal hammer, wooden club (baseball bat), stone and boleadora. These blunt objects were chosen because they can be easily used as homicidal weapons since they are common elements that can be seen in daily situations today. The marks produced were recorded and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative variables. The results showed that it is possible to identify the blunt weapon that caused the injury through the analysis of variables such as maximum diameter or depth of the bone injury. Furthermore, it was observed that depending on the damage, the injury could be associated with a blunt object with specific characteristics.
