1. Identify and characterize forms of market organization (including ownership and control of the processing/packing function) that have successfully resulted in higher farm-level prices and rank the forms of market organization that have the greatest likelihood of success for the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry. 2. Develop comprehensive economic analyses to evaluate likely impacts on the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry of implementing proposed structures identified under Objective 1. Results would measure effects on product price, product volume, product characteristics, size of the industry, and competitiveness with imports.

Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture (IAA) is essentially diversification of agriculture, leading to synergisms among sub-systems resulting in a higher productivity from land/water area under the farmers' control. One method of achieving this is adding a pond culture component to a farm system, basically to receive and utilize the nutrient inputs from the latter. The second method is physically integrating aquaculture into the other systems by modifying the farm design and operations. More than 30% of the total geographical area in 40 countries covering 9.2 million km2 in Sub-Saharan Mrica is suitable for some form of integrated aquaculture. Ba,~ed on the present production level, it has been projected that 35% of the Mrica's increased requirement of fish in 2010 could be met by small scale fish farmers using IAA in just 0.5 % of the total potentially available area. The main motivations t;hat enable farmers in adopting IAA are to i) reduce risk from cropping, ii) accumulate c...

To increase the demand for U.S. farm-raised catfish, five healthy, convenient ready-to-cook products were developed to expand consumers’ options beyond basic fresh or frozen fillets. Five new catfish products were produced, consisting of one hundred samples of each, including three size-types of Panko-breaded fish products (strips, center cuts of regular fillets, and center cuts from Delacata fillets) and two marinated products (sriracha and sesame-ginger). The breaded products were to be prepared by baking for convenience over traditional frying methods, while the marinated products were to be microwaved as healthy and convenient products. The nutrient content of the samples was analyzed, including protein, moisture, fat, fiber, ash, and carbohydrate, as well as minerals, amino acid, and fatty acid constituent content, with associated atherogenic index (AI) and thrombogenic index (TI), showing unique differences between the Panko-breaded and marinated products. In addition, a trend...

The aquatic ecosystem work of the Challenge Program (CP) on Water and Food will seek to develop and apply systems of management that sustain and, where possible, enhance the benefits to people from these systems as an integral part of approaches to improving water productivity at the basin level. It will do so through analysis, development and dissemination of tools and methodologies that will foster effective governance of aquatic ecosystems and their resources. This will be done through development, application and dissemination of tools that will provide quality information on the value and water requirements of these ecosystems and ways to enhance their productivity, and by strengthening the capacity to use these tools and techniques. To help ensure that this process begins by focusing on clear priorities, the present paper examines issues of governance, valuation, productivity and flow requirements and sets out the research questions that require immediate attention.

ABSTRACT There is a general concern among policy makers that seafood prices may not be proportional along the value chains in Bangladesh. This article investigates causal and price transmission relationships between wholesale and retail prices for five fish species in Bangladesh that include: hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha), rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla), pangas (Pangasius hypophthalmus), and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus/O. niloticus). Causal relationships between wholesale and retail prices were tested using the Granger causality test while asymmetries in price transmission were examined using the Houck and Ward approach as well as the error-correction approach. The results show that the direction of causality in prices was from retail to wholesale in many of the value chains analyzed, indicating influence of retail price on wholesale price in the Bangladesh fish sector. In general, the price transmission was found to be symmetric in the short-run while a mix of symmetric and asymmetric in the long-run. The results also show variation in price transmission behavior between aquaculture and capture fisheries products. The retailers of aquaculture products, compared to their fisheries counterparts, are less likely to be in a position to easily pass through falling prices to wholesalers and farmers. For aquaculture products, elasticities of price transmission from retailer to wholesaler were generally greater from increases in price than from decreases in price.

ABSTRACT This article uses weekly national store-level scanner data acquired from A.C. Nielsen Inc., to analyze demand for 14 unbreaded frozen seafood products in the United States (U.S.). While utilization of scanner data for food demand analyses has become increasingly popular in the U.S., just a few studies of seafood demand have utilized scanner data. We used a log linear version of the Paasche's index with lagged shares as the price index in an Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) model and modified the intercept of a standard AIDS model to account for effects of the season and the lagged demand. Own-price, cross-price, and expenditure elasticities vary across species considerably, which highlights the importance of studying consumer demand behavior at disaggregated levels for seafood. ABSTRACT Catfish market research is important in terms of the viability and sustainability of the catfish aquaculture industry in the U.S. Analysis of market trends, retail level price and sales volume have particular importance in the context of the industry's efforts to promote and market their products. Using retail level scanner data, this study examined the market trends of different catfish product forms. The study also investigated the factors affecting prices and sales for frozen catfish products. The present study is a pioneer in using market/city level retail scanner data to study marketing behavior of catfish products under different product categories (i.e., breaded, unbreaded and entrees). The results of the study highlight a need for a non-price competition strategy for catfish retail market. This includes several activities that attempt to provide added value or incentives to consumers, wholesalers, retailers, or other organizational customers to stimulate immediate sales.

The supply studies on the fisheries sector in India have been addressed at the disaggregated level by production environment and by species groups. These would be more imperative and useful for assessing the fish supply at the national level. The fish supply projections by species groups under different production environments have been obtained to a medium-term horizon, by the year 2015 under various technological scenarios. The study has concluded that the supply response to fish price changes has been stronger under aquaculture than marine environment in India. Price and technology have been reported as the important instruments to induce higher supply. The change in the relative prices of fish species would change the species-mix in the total supply. The fish production has been projected as 4.6-5.5 million tonnes of inland fish and 3.2-3.6 million tonnes of marine fish by the year 2015. More than 60 per cent of the additional fish production will be contributed by aquaculture a...
