Unlike graphene, the existence of bandgaps (1-2 eV) in the layered semiconductor molybdenum disulphide, combined with mobility enhancement by dielectric engineering, offers an attractive possibility of using single-layer molybdenum disulphide field-effect transistors in low-power switching devices. However, the complicated process of fabricating single-layer molybdenum disulphide with an additional high-k dielectric layer may significantly limit its compatibility with commercial fabrication. Here we show the first comprehensive investigation of process-friendly multilayer molybdenum disulphide field-effect transistors to demonstrate a compelling case for their applications in thin-film transistors. Our multilayer molybdenum disulphide field-effect transistors exhibited high mobilities (>100 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)), near-ideal subthreshold swings (~70 mV per decade) and robust current saturation over a large voltage window. With simulations based on Shockley's long-channel transistor model and calculations of scattering mechanisms, these results provide potentially important implications in the fabrication of high-resolution large-area displays and further scientific investigation of various physical properties expected in other layered semiconductors.

This prospective randomised study compared the antitussive effect of remifentanil during recovery from either propofol or sevoflurane anaesthesia. Seventy-four female patients undergoing thyroidectomy were anaesthetised with either propofol and remifentanil or sevoflurane and remifentanil. During recovery, remifentanil was maintained at an effect-site concentration of 2 ng.ml(-1) until extubation and the occurrence of coughing, haemodynamic parameters and recovery profiles were compared between the two groups. During recovery, neither the incidence nor the severity of cough (incidence 20% with propofol; 24% with sevoflurane, p = 0.77), nor the haemodynamic parameters were different between the two groups. Time to awakening and time to extubation were significantly shorter in the propofol group (4.7 min, 6.1 min min, respectively) compared with the sevoflurane group (7.9 min and 8.9 min respectively) (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). An effect-site concentration of 2 ng.ml(-1) of remifentanil was associated with smooth emergence from both propofol and sevoflurane anaesthesia.

The aim of this study was to predict the optimal depth for insertion of a left-sided central venous catheter in children. Using 3D chest computed tomography angiography, we measured the distance from a point where the internal jugular vein is at the superior border of the clavicle, and from a point where the subclavian vein is inferior to the anterior border of the clavicle, to the junction of the superior vena cava and the right atrium in 257 children. Linear regression analysis revealed that the distances correlated with age, weight and height. Simple formulae for the depth of a central venous catheter via the left internal jugular vein (0.07 × height (cm)) and the left subclavian vein (0.08 × height (cm)) were developed to predict placement of the central venous catheter tip at the junction of the superior vena cava with the right atrium. Using these fomulae, the proportion of catheter tips predicted to be correctly located was 98.5% (95% CI 96.8-100%) and 94.0% (95% CI 90.8-97.3%), respectively.

We sought to define the mechanism of total body irradiation (TBI)-induced seizures in NOS1(-/-) mice and amelioration by intra-esophageal manganese superoxide dismutase-plasmid liposomes (MnSOD-PL). We evaluated the role of vagus nerve pathways in irradiation-induced seizures using biochemical, physiologic, and histopathologic techniques. Heterozygous NOS1(+/-) mice demonstrated radioresistance similar to wild-type C57BL/6NHsd mice (p=0.9269). Irradiation-induced lipid peroxidation in fetal brain cultures from NOS1(-/-) or wild-type mice was reduced by MnSOD-PL. Right-sided vagotomy did not alter the TBI radiation response of wild-type or reverse the radiosensitivity of NOS1(-/-) mice. Excised esophagus from irradiated NOS1(-/-) mice demonstrated an increased histopathologic inflammatory response compared to C57BL/6NHsd mice. NOS1(-/-) mice represent a model system for dissecting the developmental abnormalities leading to esophageal-mediated TBI-induced seizures.

This study was conducted to improve a porcine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) technique by optimizing donor cell and recipient oocyte preparations. Adult and fetal fibroblasts, and cumulus and oviduct cells were used as donor cells, and in vivo- and in vitro-matured oocytes were employed as recipient oocytes. The percentages of fusion and development to the blastocyst stage, the ratio of blastocysts to 2-cell embryos, and cell number of blastocysts were monitored as experimental parameters. In Experiment 1, donor cells of four different types were transferred to enucleated oocytes matured in vitro, and more (P < 0.05) blastocysts were derived from SCNT of fetal fibroblasts than from that of other cells (15.9% versus 3.1-7.9%). For SCNT using fetal fibroblasts, increasing the number of subcultures up to 15 times did not improve developmental competence to the blastocyst stage (12.2-16.7%). In Experiment 2, fetal fibroblasts were transferred to enucleated oocytes that matured ...

We study the influence of the mechanical deformation induced by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) on the resonance frequency of a defect cavity in a 2D photonic crystal membrane. Using FDTD-simulations we determine the resonance frequency and quality factor of a nanocavity of a GaAs based structure with embedded InAs quantum dots. Under the influence of a SAW, we find a periodic modulation of the cavity resonance wavelength of Δλ> 2 nm accompanied by only a weak< 0.5× reduction of the Q-factor. Initial experiments for a ...
