In this paper we use basic properties of strongly convex functions to obtain new inequalities including Jensen's type and Jensen-Mercer type inequalities. Applications for special means are pointed out as well. We also give a Jensen's operator inequality for strongly convex functions. As a corollary, we improve Hölder-McCarthy inequality under suitable conditions. More precisely we show that if Sp( A )⊂ I⊆( 1,∞), then 〈 Ax,x 〉^r<〈A^rx,x 〉 -r^2-r/2( 〈A^2x,x 〉 -〈 Ax,x 〉^2), r> 2 and if Sp( A )⊂ I⊆( 0,1 ), then 〈A^rx,x 〉<〈 Ax,x 〉^r+r-r^2/2( 〈 Ax,x 〉^2-〈A^2x,x 〉), 0<r<1 for each positive operator A and x∈H with x =1.

In this article, we present new inequalities for the numerical radius of the sum of two Hilbert space operators. These new inequalities will enable us to obtain many generalizations and refinements of some well known inequalities, including multiplicative behavior of the numerical radius and norm bounds. Among many other applications, it is shown that if T is accretive-dissipative, then 1/?2 ||T|| ? ?(T), where ?(?) and ||?||denote the numerical radius and the usual operator norm, respectively. This inequality provides a considerable refinement of the well known inequality 1/2 ||T|| ? ?(T).
‎In this paper, a new class of fuzzy sets called fuzzy strongly ${{g}^{*}}$-closed sets is introduced and its properties are investigated. Moreover, we study some more properties of this type of closed spaces.

In this study, we extend some “sneak-out” inequalities on time scales for a function depending on more than one parameter. The results are proved by using the induction principle and time scale version of Minkowski inequalities. In seeking applications, these inequalities are discussed in classical, discrete, and quantum calculus.

Photoacoustic imaging of the prostate is challenging due to the limited access and limited acoustic windows to the prostate gland. We aim to develop intraoperative prostate photoacoustic imaging using the da Vinci robotic system and a pick-up ultrasound transducer that can be easily picked up and manipulated by the robot. We propose a new approach in which the da Vinci robot is programmed to acquire trajectories in a shared control configuration with “virtual fixtures”; the pick-up transducer is controlled so that it stays parallel to a single axis defined as the tomography axis, and its translation is fixed to a single plane normal to this axis. The surgeon controls the transducer motion on the tissue along this virtual fixture while the laser is fired and photoacoustic data are collected periodically. The RMS errors of the photoacoustic tomography images are 0.06 a.u. This study confirms that intraoperative da Vinci robot-assisted photoacoustic imaging with a pick-up transducer is feasible.

In this paper, the set-membership affine projection (SM-AP) algorithm is utilized to censor non-informative data in big data applications. To this end, the probability distribution of the additive noise signal and the excess of mean-squared error (EMSE) in steady-state are employed in order to estimate the threshold parameter of the single threshold SM-AP (ST-SM-AP) algorithm aiming at attaining the desired update rate. Furthermore, by defining an acceptable range for the error signal, the double threshold SM-AP (DT-SM-AP) algorithm is proposed to detect very large errors due to the irrelevant data such as outliers. The DT-SM-AP algorithm can censor non-informative and irrelevant data in big data applications, and it can improve misalignment and convergence rate of the learning process with high computational efficiency. The simulation and numerical results corroborate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over traditional algorithms.

In this paper, we study some complementary inequalities to Jensen's inequality for self-adjoint operators, unital positive linear mappings, and real valued twice differentiable functions. New improved complementary inequalities are presented by using an improvement of the Mond-Pečarić method. These results are applied to obtain some inequalities with quasi-arithmetic means.

Elevated serum triglyceride/HDL cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease and mortality in the general population. However, the association of this important clinical index with mortality has not been fully evaluated in patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). We hypothesized that the association of serum TG/HDL-C ratio with all-cause and CV mortality in patients with ESRD on MHD is different from the general population. We studied the association of serum TG/HDL-C ratio with all-cause and CV mortality in a nationally representative cohort of 50,673 patients on incident hemodialysis between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2011. Association of baseline and time-varying TG/HDL-C ratios with mortality was assessed using Cox proportional hazard regression models, with adjustment for multiple variables, including statin therapy. During the median follow-up of 19 months (interquartile range, 11-32 months), 12,778 all-ca...

Despite the many advances intended to enhance the response to treatment, the survival rate of patients with ovarian cancer has only marginally improved in the past few decades. One major cause for this, is the lack of diagnostics for platinum-resistant disease. The goal of this study was to determine whether Raman micro-spectroscopy in conjunction with multivariate statistical analysis could discriminate between chemically fixed cisplatin-resistant (A2780cp) and cisplatin-sensitive (A2780s) human ovarian carcinoma cells. Raman spectra collected from individual cells were pre-processed and subsequently analyzed with Principal Component Analysis - Linear Discriminant Analysis (PCA-LDA). Statistically significant differences (P <  0.0001) were observed between the Raman spectra of A2780s and A2780cp cells. A diagnostic accuracy of 82% was obtained using the PCA-LDA classifier model for the discrimination between the A2780s and A2780cp cells. The loading plot analysis suggests that r...

Abstract   Distribution of goods and services in cities is of utmost importance. Selecting appropriate venues for different service centers in a city not only enables the citizens to access these services much more easily, but also reduces the traffic load caused by trips made to reach them. Unfortunately, the lack of a correct urban planning has led to inappropriate formation of many cities around the world in terms of the locations assumed for different service centers. Since the private sector has been given the responsibility to construct most of these centers, changing their current locations may be restricted due to legal obligations. Therefore, it seems necessary for the government to construct new service centers with high competitive facilities to attract customers and to compete with those built by the private sector. In this paper, the selection of appropriate locations to construct new service centers has been studied. Such locations have been selected in a way to fulfill goals such as rapid and easy accessibility for the customers and reduction of traffic drawbacks caused by the related trips. In this regard, a model for service centers with restricted capacity has been designed and a parallel simulated annealing algorithm has been proposed to solve it. Finally, the proposed algorithm has been utilized to locate the health centers around the city of Isfahan and its efficiency has been investigated. The findings highlight the accuracy and speed of the proposed algorithm in location of the health centers of Isfahan.

In the general population, circulating adiponectin is associated with a favorable cardiovascular risk profile (eg, lower triglycerides and body fat) and decreased mortality. Hemodialysis (HD) patients have comparatively higher adiponectin concentrations, but prior studies examining the adiponectin-mortality association in this population have not accounted for body composition or shown a consistent relationship. Prospective cohort study. We examined baseline serum adiponectin concentrations in 501 HD patients across 13 dialysis centers from the prospective MADRAD (Malnutrition, Diet, and Racial Disparities in Chronic Kidney Disease) cohort (entry period, October 2011 to February 2013; follow-up through August 2013). Serum adiponectin concentration in tertiles (tertiles 1, 2, and 3 defined as ≤16.1, >16.1-<30.1, and ≥30.1-100.0μg/mL, respectively). Adjustment variables included case-mix and laboratory test results (age, sex, race, ethnicity, vintage, diabetes, serum albumin, to...

Advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with impaired exercise capacity, skeletal muscle dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Mitochondria are the primary source for energy production and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mitochondrial state 3 respiration, mitochondrial complex I enzyme activity, and tissue porin/actin ratio were determined in the gastrocnemius muscle of male SD rats 14 weeks after 5/6 nephrectomy (CKD) or sham-operation (control). The CKD group exhibited azotemia, hypertension, significant reduction (-39%) of state 3 mitochondrial respiration, and a significant increase in the mitochondrial complex I enzyme activity. The latter is the first step in oxidative phosphorylation, a process linked to production of ROS. These abnormalities were associated with a significant reduction in muscle porin/β actin ratio denoting substantial reduction of mitochondrial mass in skeletal muscle of animals with CKD. CKD results in impaired mitochondrial respirati...

Background: Patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) are particularly susceptible to dysregulation of energy metabolism, which may manifest as protein energy wasting and cachexia. In recent years, the endocannabinoid system has been shown to play an important role in energy metabolism with potential relevance in ESRD. N-acylethanolamines are a class of fatty acid amides which include the major endocannabinoid ligand, anandamide, and the endogenous peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α agonists, oleoylethanolamide (OEA) and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA). Methods: Serum concentrations of OEA and PEA were measured in MHD patients and their correlations with various clinical/laboratory indices were examined. Secondarily, we evaluated the association of circulating PEA and OEA levels with 12-month all-cause mortality. Results: Both serum OEA and PEA levels positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels and negatively correlated with body fat and b...
