Inoculation of maize silage with Lactobacillus buchneri (5 x 10(5) c.f.u. g(-1) of maize silage) prior to ensiling results in the formation of aerobically stable silage. After 9 months, lactic acid bacterium counts are approximately 10(10) c.f.u. g(-1) in these treated silages. An important subpopulation (5.9 x 10(7) c.f.u. g(-1)) is able to degrade 1,2-propanediol, a fermentation product of L. buchneri, under anoxic conditions to 1-propanol and propionic acid. From this group of 1,2-propanediol-fermenting, facultatively anaerobic, heterofermentative lactobacilli, two rod-shaped isolates were purified and characterized. Comparative 16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed that the newly isolated bacteria have identical 16S rDNA sequences and belong phylogenetically to the L. buchneri group. Strains traditionally identified as Proteus vulgaris formed three biogroups. Biogroup 1, characterized by negative reactions for indole production, salicin fermentation and aesculin hydrolysis, is now known as Proteus penneri. Biogroup 2, characterized by positive reactions for indole, salicin and aesculin, was shown by DNA hybridization (hydroxyapatite method) to be a genetic species separate from biogroup 1 and from biogroup 3 which is positive for indole production and negative for salicin and aesculin. In this study, 52 strains were examined, of which 36 strains were Proteus vulgaris biogroup 3, which included the current type strain of the species P. vulgaris (ATCC 29905T), and compared to seven strains of Proteus vulgaris biogroup 2 and nine type strains of other species in the genera Proteus, Providencia and Morganella. Two enterococcal strains LMG 16607T and LMG 16612 originating from sea water were analysed in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Both strains, assigned as Enterococcus sp. in the BCCM/LMG culture collection, possessed analogous protein profiles, but these were different from all other enterococcal species. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of one strain showed the highest similarity, 96·9–96·1 %, with its closest phylogenetic neighbours Enterococcus saccharolyticus, Enterococcus sulfureus, Enterococcus saccharominimus and Enterococcus italicus. Further genomic analysis by (GTG)5-PCR fingerprinting and sequence analysis of the housekeeping gene phenylalanyl-tRNA synthase (pheS) and distinct biochemical features confirmed that the two strains represent a novel enterococcal species for which the name Enterococcus aquimarinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMG 16607T (=CCM 7283T).

The identification and classification of yeasts have traditionally been based on morphological, physiological and biochemical traits. Various kits have been developed as rapid systems for yeast identification, but mostly for clinical diagnosis. In recent years, different molecular biology techniques have been developed for yeast identification, but there is no available database to identify a large number of species. In the present study, the restriction patterns generated from the region spanning the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and the 5.8S rRNA gene were used to identify a total of 132 yeast species belonging to 25 different genera, including teleomorphic and anamorphic ascomycetous and basidiomycetous yeasts. This study is based upon material from subfamilies Aphodiinae and
Scarabaeinae of the family Scarabaeidae collected from different localities of Turkey between 1966 and 2013. The study resulted in recording for Turkish fauna of 20 species and subspecies from 14 genera of Aphodiinae and 36 species and subspecies from 12 genera of Scarabaeinae. In total, 56 species and subspecies belonging to 26 genera of the subfamilies Aphodiinae and Scarabaeinae are listed. Among them, Acanthobodilus immundus (CREUTZER, 1799), Aphodius fimetarius (LINNAEUS, 1758), Bodilus lugens (CREUTZER, 1799) and Colobopterus erraticus (LINNAEUS, 1758) from Aphodiinae and Gymnopleurus mopsus mopsus (PALLAS, 1781), Euoniticellus fulvus (GOEZE, 1777), Caccobius schreberi (LINNAEUS, 1767), Euonthophagus gibbosus (SCRIBA, 1790), Onthophagus (Palaeonthophagus) ruficapillus BRULLÉ, 1832 and Scarabaeus typhon (FISCHER VON WALDHEIM, 1823) from Scarabaeinae have been found the most abundant and widespread species.
