No. 19.753. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YVILLIAM IV. JACKSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BARNIIART BROTHERS d; SPINDLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Design No. 19,753, dated April 8, 1890. Application filed January 2, 1890. Serial No. 335,689. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM \V. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for aFont of Script T pe, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises capitals, lowcr-case letters, figures, character dz, dollar-mark, and points. In general character it is flowing, exceedingly inclined to the right, and each letter and character has both hair-lines and gradual swell shades, shaded lines being in no instance very heavy.
The special and distinguishing feature is exhibited in capitals I5, D, II, K, O, I, Q, R, U, V, V, X, Y, and Z and charaoterda, and consists of the hair-line flourish, which in some of the letters, as capitals 15, H, K, I, and R, is an appendix to the stem, and in others, as capitals D, O, and Q, is a continuation of the oval of the body of the letter, and in others, as U, V, X, Y, and Z, is an initial flourish blending with the first element of the letter, but in all cases is produced until it crosses at the lower part the element to which it is appended or prefixed. In most instances this 30 crossing or intersection occurs at the line and in all instances very near the line, and in every instance, also, the said blended flourish is produced below the line.
I claim- 35 The design fora font of script type herein shown and described, wherein the letters are of flowing style and have hair-lines and gradually-swelling shades, and which is characterized by hair-line flourishes prefixed or ap- 4o pended at the upper end of principal elements of several of the letters and produced down across the lower part of such element and below the line, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 45 my hand, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 20th day of December, A. D. 1889.
WM. W. JACKSON.
