DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,353, dated May 17, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that 1, JOHN Wnsr, a citizen of the United States, audresidiug at the city ofBrooklyn, county ofKings,and State of New York. have invented a certain new and origihal Design for a Font of Printing-Type; andl do declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, reference being bad to the accompanying fac -simile typographic impression, whiclrforins part of this specification.

My design consists ofa font of printing-type comprising heavy lines at the top and bottom of the letters and light interior and vertical lines,and having portions of the letters extending above and below the line of print. These featurcs,l am aware,are not new,aud i lay no claim to originality in that regard; but I have combined with these features others which possess novel and,as I believe, attractive fea tures.

The letters ABCEFGH K LM OQR S V \V X Y 8.5, the figures O, 4, and 8, and the lower-case letters a fg h k m n o t n v w x y have portions of theirlines gradually thickening from a hair-line toa wider line, and at the termination of the widest portion of the line a small ornamental hair-line curve is added, which has a direction at an acute angle to the line to which it is added, and which terminates in a dot.

The letters A D I J N T U Z, the numerals 1 2 3 '5 6 7 9, and the lower-case letters e d j p7,, and the mark l all have the feature of the hairline curve and dot; but it is attached to a heavy horizontal line in these cases, and not to one gradually thickened.

Theletters A B E F P R and the lower-case letters b, e, i, l, q, and s have portions oftheir lines gradually thickening from hair-lines to ones of greater width, forming cusps. The punctuation-marks are not peculiar,except the mark I above mentioned.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- The design fora font of printing-type, as shown and described, consisting of letters having heavy lines at the top and bottom, with light interior lines extending (some of them) above and below the normal line of print, having some lines gradually increasing in width from hair-lines to wider lines, and having in some lctters,and making acute angles with the said wider lines, terminations of hair line curves ending in a dot.
