PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES l lll lYltlt, Uh IlIUAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSTGNOR TU IARNHAR'I BROS. & SPlNlH'IER, ()F SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,968, datedx-March 19, 1889.
Application filed January 26, 1839. Serial No. 297,729. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, (THARLEs E. llEYEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lhicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-'lype, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises capitals, figures, points dollar-mark, and character (it. Its general character is heavy-faced, considerably extended, having lines of substantially uniform width. The distinguishing characteristics are ex 1 ibited in the top and bottom strokes of capital E and top of capital F and in the crossstroke of capital T and the horizontal strok esof capital Z, all of which strokes are bent at the unconnected end just before the attachment of the ceriph, the ceriph on the inner side constituting a continuation of the curve thus commenced, and on the outer side being perfcctly straight and making a blunt angle with the inner curved side and widening back to the junction with the principal stroke to about twice the width of said stroke at the junction, the excess of width constituting an abrupt shoulder on the outer side of the linethat is, on the upper side of upper lines and on the lower side of lower lines. In the case of capital '1 the curve described at the two ends before the junction of the ceriph continues so far toward the Inildle of the stroke that the upper edge of said cross-stroke is substantially curved the entire distance between the ceriphs.
Another characteristic feature is presented in capitals L and VV, the outer strokes of each of said letters consisting of curves convexed outward and slightly swelled at the center, very acute horizontal ceriphs finishing said curves at their unconnected ends, said ceriphs pointing outwardly, and characteristics of the nature of ceriphs being appended to the other end of said curves, also extending outwardly parallel with the ceriphs proper at the unconnected ends and similarly acute. In the case of capital M the two outer curved elements merge at the top, and the ceriph-like characteristics mentioned together constitute a con-. tinuous horizontal finishing top stroke for said letter. In the case of capital TV the vertical intermediate stroke is terminated at the upper end a little lower than the side strokes. Capital U is characterized by very acute and short projcctions one upon each side toward the bottompointing upward, the lower edge of said projections being a continuation of the lower bounding curve of the letter.
Another distinguishing feature of this design consists in very slightly rounded or dulled angles, which occur at the intersection of the cross-stroke of A, with the two stems at all of the inner angles formed by the horizontal strokes with the stems of capitals I l'), E, 1 H, l", R, and T, and also at all the intersections of the lines of capitals K, L, N, V, X, Y, and Z. At some of these intersections this characteristic is very slight, and in none of them is it such as to prevent the intersection from appearing at a casual glance to be a welldefined angle.
I claim The design for a font of printing-type herein shown and described, of which the letters have a heavy face considerably extended, and which is characterized by horizontal strokes of capitals E, F, T, and Z, curved toward the unconnected ends, and finished with a ceriph whose inner edge constitutes a continuation of said curve of the stroke, and by the letters M and W having their outer strokes curved outwardly and finished with acute horizontal ceriphs at their upper 'ends and acute ceriphlike characteristics at their other ends, and by the slight filling in or rounding of the angles at junctions and intersections of straightlines in a large number of letters, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, at Chicago, Illinois, this 11th day of January, 1889.
CHARLES E. MEYER.
