Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 7, 1907. Serial No. 356,190.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgerton, in the county of Platte and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clip-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in clip hooks for harness. I

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of hooks of this character whereby the same will be rendered more durable and efficient and the cost of producing the hooks reduced.

A further object is to provide a clip hook adapted to be attached to the various parts of the harness in such a manner as to provide a saving of leather as well as a saving of time and labor in applying the same, the construction of the hook also being such as to prevent injury to the horse.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a plan view showing the arrangement of the device when applied to a hame string or fastening strap; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hook removed from the strap.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the hook which consists of a body or attaching portion 2 which may be of any suitable design or configuration. The body portion 2 is provided with one hole 8 to receive a rivet 8 by means of which the hook is fastened to the harness. The outer end of the body portion 2 is bent inwardly upon itself to form a hook 5, the inner end of which is adapted to bear against the outer end of a strap .or part of the harness to which the hook is applied.v In the figures the hook is shown as being pivotally connected by a single rivet. 8 to one end of the hame fastening strap so that the hook may be swung laterally to one side of the end of the strap and quickly engaged with the ring or eye on the end of the hame, after which the hook is again turned into engagement bent.

Secured by the rivet 8 is a single buckle loop 9, having its free ends passed between the strap and the top portion 2 of the hook so as to receive the rivet. The opposite or loop end has secured therein a suitable harness buckle 10. In most connections of this type the hook has an inner leaf or bar so as to form a loop. This inner leaf is dispensed with in this invention, and thereby prevents injury to the animals, which is frequently caused by the inner leaf becoming worn or The construction of parts as herein shown also dispenses with the necessity of providing an inner covering of leather which is employed to shield or protect the inner leaf or bar of the hook and which soon becomes worn out by constant rubbing against the body of the horse thereby exposing said i11- ner bar or leaf which frequently becomes bent and injures the horse as herein described. It will also be seen that when fastening the hook to the harness as herein shown and described that a great saving of time and labor is provided for over the usual manner of fastening such hooks by stitching the same in between the layers of leather forming the connections. It is to be particularly observed that the end of the strap to which the hook is attached serves to effectually close the entrance to the hook 5, thereby preventing the part with which the hook is engaged escaping therefrom.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 2- In combination with a strap, a clip hook therefor comprising a flat body portion riveted to said strap on one side only, a rearwardly bent hook integral with said fiat body portion and having its terminal extending to the opposite side of the strap and overlying the end of the latter and free from connection therewith so as to have relative lateral movement, a flexible buckle loop having its inner end portion secured between the body portion of said end hook and the strap, and a buckle carried by said loop.-
