LAYER-LOOP FOR HARNESS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,734, dated December 2, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that I, JAMES M. BASINGER, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Layer-Loops for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to that class of harness-loops employed for connecting the breeehing with the short straps or stays which are suspended from the hip-strap, or for connecting the breast-collar with the neck-strap.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive loop which can be readily applied to a harness, and which will be neat in appearance and will not deface the parts of the harness to which it is applied.

My invention consists, to that end, of the improvement which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of the breeching provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is .a similar view with the top layer strap raised. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in line a as, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a persective view of my improved layer-loop. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same stamped out of wire.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

A represents a portion of the breechingstrap, and B my improved layer-loop secured thereto. The loop B consists of two end or side bars, b b, which are connected at their upper ends by a curved crossbar, 2), forming a three'sided loop. The end bars, I) b, rest against the outer side of the breeching, and the bar b, where it connects with the side bars, I), is. curved outwardly to form an offset, b whereby a space is formed between the bar I) and the breeching for the stay-strap, which is secured .to the cross-bar I). The free ends of the bars I) are provided with raised hooks c, which have downwardly or inwardly projecting ends 0.

D represents the top layer-strap, which is secured to the outer side of the breechingstrap A by rows of stitching d d.

E is a short piece of leather inserted between the breeching and the layer-strap, and provided with holes 6 6, through which the hooks c 0 of the bars I) b are inserted, the

ends 0 projecting over the strap E, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends 0 c, which overlap and bear against the outer sides of the strap to which the loop is attached, serve not only to hold the loop firmly in an upright position, but also prevent the loop from being drawn out of the holes in the strap without turning the loop into an abnormal position,which is not liable to occur in the practical use of the device, and which cannot occur when the parts are sewed together. The sides of the strap E are preferably tapered, and its upper edge is notched or cut away, as shown at f, to allow the upper edge of the strap or filler E to fit closely against the breeehing along its upper edge. The layerstrap D and filler E are secured to the breeching by the seams d, which extend along the upper and lower edges of the filler. Theloop B is secured to the strap or filler E by its hooked ends being inserted through theholes e. The filler E and the loop B secured thereto are then inserted between the breeehing A and the top layer-strap, D, and are secured in place by the stitches cl d, the cross-bar b of the loop projecting slightly above the top of the breeohing.

My improved layer-loop can be readily cast of malleable iron; or, if preferred, it may be stamped out of wire. It is easily securedin place without the use of rivets, and forms a neat and secure loop.

I claim as my invention-- 1. A threesidedlayer-loop for harness,composed of the side bars, b I), connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, b, and having at their lower endshooks cc, terminating in projecting ends 0 c, which overlap and bear against the outer side of the strap through which the hooks c c are passed, thereby holding the loop securely on said strap, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the breeching A and layer-strap D, of the loop B, composed of the crossbar b and side bars, Z) I), having hookshaped ends 0 c, and the strap or filler E, provided with holes 6 e, the breeching A, strap D, and filler E being secured together by stitching, whereby said loop is secured in place, substantially as set forth.
