(No ModeL') 4 y E. D. COLE;
HAME GLIP.
N0.261,311. llmvntefi July-18,1882.-
UNITED STATES PATENT' OEEICE.
EDWARD D. COLE, OF MACON, ILLINOIS.
HAME-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,311, dated July 18, 1882.
Application filed Apma, rss2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LEDWARD D. COLE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at M acou, in the countyof Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hame-Clips, of which the following -is a specification. l My invention relates to a new and useful-im provement in clips for llames, by means of which the trace or tug is secured to the hame; and it consists ofa clip formed with an eye or loop at one end, said loop formed with a tang extendiuglengthwise of the body, bent down, and secured to the body by rivets or screws, said body being further provided with ears at the end opposite the loop and a screw passing through said ears, around which the forward end ot' the trace is secured, in the manner and for the purpose described.
The objects as set forth are attained by the4 device illustrated inthe accompanying draw- Figure lis a side view, representing the clip as it appears in the casting before being bent. Fig. 2 is a front view, showing the tang bent down and secured to the body by rivets and the screw at the lower end. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view, showing the forward part of the trace secured to the clip in the proper manner. Y
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the main body of the clip, and A the lateral extending tang of the loop D. The loop when cast is left open, as shown in Fig. l, to admit of its being hooked onto the draw-loop or staple of the hames, after which, it is bent onto the body and secured thereto with rivets or screws. No leather or part of the trace is allowed to lie between the two parts of the clip, the end of the trace C being looped around the screw B at the rear end,`
which passes through the ears c c, screwing into one of them, thus forming a joint to allow the trace to pass over the collar without bending or otherwise straining the leather. To
further protect the leather a sleeve, B', is f1tted loosely over thc screw, its length being equal to the space between the ears.
In repairing a trace the screw B is removed, and the trace thereby detached from the hame; or in case the clip should break a new one can be readily substituted by simply removing the screw,"thus obviating the necessity of cutting and splicing the trace, and therebyl greatly reducing the expense in repairing.
l am aware that a llame-clip has been constructed with an open loop having two tangs or arms extending laterally therefrom, one of the said tangs being wider than the other, and provided with a slot at its end for the reception ot the leather, and also with a metal keeper extending from its under side. I do' notclaimsuch construction broadly, my improved clip being formed with ears projecting from the end of the wider tang, and having a screw-boltpassin g through them, on which said screw-bolt is placed a loosely-tting sleeve, to-
which the leather is attached, thereby rendering 'any portion of the harness which is secured thereto readily removable. There being notxed projections on my clip, it is less liable to injure the adjoining parts ofthe harness or chafe the animal, while by my improvement as herein set forth a joint is provided at the outer end of the clip, thus ail'ording an easy movement ot the trace as it passes over the collar and preventing its breaking by general usage. 1
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim, and desire ito secure by Letters Patent,'is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the metal clip D, having taugs A and A, one of which is extended to forma dat bearing, and is provided with the ears o c, extending from its end, the screw B, and encircling sleeve B', as shown and described.
. EDWARD D. COLE. Witnesses:
