Description
PATENTED DEC. 25, 1906.
P. Ba METZGERK TRANSFORMATION TOY.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.13.1906.
ATTORNEYS FRANK B. METZGER, OF BAYONNE, NEWV JERSEY.
TRANSFORMATION TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed March 13, 1906- Serial No. 305,771.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. METZGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transformation Toys, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as transformation toys or shadowgraphs, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for the amusement of the young and others and by means of which the correct picture of a person, object, or thing is changed into an outline or shadow thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a picture card or sheet which I employ Fig. 2, a back view thereof; Fig. 3, a front view of a frame in connection with which the picture card or sheet is employed Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide a card or sheet a, composed of paper, wood, cardboard, or any other suitable material and provided centrally with an opening a which may be of any form, either circular or angular or of irregular shape, and extending into the opening a from one side thereof-is a figure I), painted or colored on the front side thereof to represent a man, and the back side of which is plain, white, colored, or uncolored.
In the form of construction shown the body of a tree 0 is represented as extending into the opening of, and the man (indicated at b) is represented as climbing the tree to escape the attack of a dog d, and one hand of the man is grasping a limb c and one leg is inserted between said limb and the trunk or body of the tree.
It will be understood, of course, that the card or board and the figure of the man are colored or painted on one side to represent the body of the tree, the dog, and the man, while the entire card or sheet on the back side thereof may be left plain or may be of any desired color.
I also provide a frame 6, which in the form of construction shown comprises upright side members 6 and a front sheet, plate, or board e having a central opening 6, and the frame 6 is preferably provided with basesupports e whereby said frame may be held in an upright position, and the side members 6 of said frame are provided with grooves e, into which the sheet or card a may be inserted from the top of the frame, and said frame is also provided rearwardly of the front sheet, plate, or board 6 with a translucent sheet f, composed of oiled paper or any other suitable material.
When the card or sheet a is inserted into the frame 6 and said frame is held between the observer and the light, the figure or figures on said card or sheet will show only in outline or as a shadow, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the man and dog and tree disappear and the outline of the bird only is shown.
It will be understood, of course, that the projection into one side of the opening a in the card or sheet a may be of any form, shape, or outline, and projections may be formed at both or any of the sides of said opening or at the top and bottom thereof which will extend thereinto, and one side of said projection or projections may be painted or colored to represent any kind or class of persons, animals, objects, or things in any position, all that is necessary in this connection being that said projection or projections be so formed that when viewed from the opposite side or through a translucent screen they will represent the different persons, objects, or things in outline, but the back side of the card or sheet and the parts thereof that project into the central opening may also be painted, printed, or colored to represent persons, animals, objects, or things, if desired, and the result will be the same when the card or sheet is inserted into the frame 6.
In addition to serving as an amusement device or toy my improved transformation device may also be employed for the purpose of advertising, it being understood that any desired advertisement may be printed on either side of the card or sheet c.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a
ing provided on one side with the picture'or representation of a difierent person, object or thing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I 5 my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of March, 1906.
