Be it know-n that I, JAMES S. VINE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Amusement and for Advertising, of which the following IS aspecification.

My invention relates to 'adevice to be used for amusement or for advertising purposes,

its object beingto produce a simple and cheap device for pastime which. may also be utilized as medium for advertisements;

- To this end it consists in a blank of paper, card-board, or other suitable material, adapted to be folded and used as hereinafter pointed out, whereon a suitable design .is printed or otherwise made to appear, in independent. sections m proper relationto fit together by proper folding of the blank and present the appearance desired as a whole, in the use to.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a general view of the square or blank of paper or other material printed with the figure, for example of an owls head, separated into four sections occupying small squares at the four corners of the blank, with other portions of the-design adjacent, the center design occu ying the four corners of the blank and bounding an interior square placed diagonally in the blank. Fig. 2, is a rear view of the blank after the first folding: and Fig. 3, a s milar rear viewafter the second folding. F1gs. 4 and 5, are perspective views illustrating the method'of using the device. Referring now to the drawings, A, desig- I nates a blank or sheet of paper, light'cardboard, stiffened cloth or other material capa ble of receiving a design to be painted, printed, embossed, or otherwise placed thereon, and of being-folded-as herein described.

The principal part of the design represents,

. for example, the head of a man or woman, or

of a bird, beast, or reptile, or any nondescript adapted to the use herein 'set forth. This done, the thumb and first three fingers of'the hand are inserted in .the pockets behind the flaps, a (containing the main design) as indicated in Fig. 4, and, y the thumb and thirdfinger together, and closing and opening these as pairs, the device when held toward the observer presents the similitudje of an owl opening and closing its mouth,as shown in Fig. 5-the red triangles, of the mouth and throat and when open exposing the catch word or phrase as indicated. While the device'thus described, with any substitutedesign such as adeaths head or any other that may be appropriate, may be placed on the market as an article of sale for the amusement-0t children and others, it may also be furnished to manufacturers of other salablearticles with advertising phrases of given away with their goods as premiums.

The device may also'be used for advertis I ing purposes in shop windows with a simple mechanism in the similitude of the fingers of 'a hand caused to open and close automaticallyby a simple device such asa pendulum or spring: but this is suggestive merely, and as it relates merely to the mode of use of my invention I have not thought it necessary to illustrate it in the drawings, the hand shown being a fair type of various modes of use.-

I have described the device as consisting of a blank of paper, light card board, 1350., produced as an integral structure. As the use of the device however, produces some wear and a tendency to break the folded edges, it may be reinforced at the back by a layer of cloth as in ordinary map construction; or may be formed of separate squares and triangles of paper secured to a cloth backing. The construction first described is however preferred on account of cheapness.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A blank foran advertising device consisting of a rectangular blank of foldable material having separated printed or painted portions representing the exterior face of a creature and the interior of the mouth of the same, the said blank being capable of being folded to bring together the portions representin g the creatu res face concealing the portion' representing the interior of the mouth but permitting the opening of the mouth,substantially as described.

2. An advertising device consisting of a series of pockets of foldable material capable of lying closely together, said pockets being open but connected at the back and closed but separated at the front, the exterior of said pockets being printed or painted to represent a creatures face when the pockets are brought together, and the adjacent sides of the pockets being provided with advertising matter; whereby fingers can be inserted into the said pockets to separate them at the front to resemble the opening of the mouth of the creatnre to display the advertising matter, substantially as described.
