TOY.
Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed November 17, 1919. Serial No. 338,447.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MORTON WILD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a toy which will afford instruction and considerable amusement to children by the manner in which the same can be utilized to simulate many interesting and amusing expressions of the human countenance, or the countenanceof animals.
With this object, and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the base member of my improved toy;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a face view of a number of the pieces which form features'for the base member;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and I Figs. 5 and 6 are face views showing two ways which the toy may be used.
Throughout the various Views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the preferred embodiment of my inven tion, as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the base member of my improved toy. This base member 1 is preferably in the form of a flat piece of material, and may be made of wood, metal, card board, or the like. In the drawings, I have shown the base member of a contour roughly corresponding in outline to that of a human head. The same may be also madein "the form of the head of a cat, dog, or other animal if desired.
In Fig. 3 is shown a number of the variously shaped parts or pieces of material which are used to provide features for the head 1. These pieces are preferably of the same material as the base member, and may be suitably colored 'to produce realistic effects.
At 2 is shown a piece of suitable contour to be placed on the face of the base member 1 at its upper end. This piece 2 is suitably colored and shaped to represent the hair of the head represented by the member 1. At 3 is shown an oval shaped member,-two like pieces of which may be used to produce eyes for the head, as shown in Fig. 5, or one of these may be used to produce a mouth, as shown in Fig. 6. At 4 is a circular shaped member adaptable for use as a nose, mouth or eye. The numerals toll inclusive indicate pieces of other shapes, all of which may be interchangeably used in a multiplicity of ways to form features for the face, two of the many arrangements that can be produced being shown in Figs. 5 and 6. By arranging these parts in different ways, by in terchangeably usingthe same, and by having the same of various shapes and colors, many amusing and interesting arrangements of the features and expressions of the face can be had. It will be seen that the number of parts adapted to be used and the shapes of the same are practically unlimited.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment shown, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A toy or the like, comprising a' flat member having a contour resembling the outline of a head, a plurality of variously shaped flat pieces of material adapted to be removably placed upon one of the fiat faces of the head shaped member to represent the features thereon, any of said pieces being adapted to be interchangeably used to form the eyes, nose, or mouth of the countenance to obtain difl'erent expressions therefrom.
Signed at the city, New York, this 14th day of ovember, 1919.
MORTON- WILD.
