NECKTlEnL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mayaz, 190e.
Application led September 13,1905. Serial No. 278,214.
To a/ZZ wir/071e it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK LUDWIG HILL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification, such as willl enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to neckties, and particularly to means. for holding an ordinary string-tie or other tie in proper position on a collar.; and the invention consists in a necktie constructed as hereinafter described and in an elastic attachment adapted to be connected With the tie when the latter is placed around the collar and to operate in connection with the tie and the collar so as to hold the tie in proper position on the collar.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary string-tie which I employ Fig. 2, a perspective view of an elastic attachment which I employ in connection with the tie, and Fig. 3 a sectional plan view of the front portion of a collar and showing the front ends thereof connected by an ordinary collar-button and showing my improved tie and tie attachment passed around the front portion of the collar and showing the operation of my improvement.
In the practice of my invention as shown in the drawings I take an ordinary stringtie a, which is preferably composed of two thicknesses of material, and in the inner part of this tie and at a predetermined distance from the ends thereof I form transverse holes a2, somewhat similar to ordinary buttonholes. I also provide an elastic strip b of predetermined length and connect with each end thereof a hook member b2. The hooks b2 at the opposite ends of the elastic member I) are both turned in the same direction, and the hook portions thereof extend in the direction of the central portion of the elastic strip l), and the back portions of said hook membersare provided with backwardly-directed teeth b3.
In Fig. 3 I have also shown, at c and c2, the end portions of an ordinary standing collar connected by an ordinary collar-button d, and in practice the collar is placed around the neck and connected with the neckband of a shirt in the usual manner. The tie a is then also passed around the neck and the end portions thereof adjusted, after which the hook members b2 at the opposite ends of the elastic strip b are passed into the holes a2 in the tie a, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The elastic strip b is made of such length as to draw the end portions of the tie tightly around the collar, and when the parts have been connected as above described the end portions a3 of the tie are tied in the usual manner. In this operation the teeth b3 on the hook members b are forced against or into the collar, and these teeth prevent the tie from sliding lup or down on the collar and securely hold it in proper position. In Fig. 3 of the drawings the strip I) is shown above the button d, but in practice said strip may be placed below said button, if desired, and is preferably so placed.
In the accompanying drawings I have also shown the back part of the tie a provided with a buttonhole a4, through which in practice the back collar-button may be passed; but this feature of the construction is not absolutely essential to my invention and may or may not be employed. It will also be apparent that my improvement may be applied to four-in-hand ties as well as to string-ties, and changes in and modifications of the detailsof the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A necktie, the inner side of which is provided at a predetermined distance from the ends thereof with holes or openings, and an elastic strip provided at its ends with hooks adapted to be inserted into said holes or openings, substantially as shown and described.

A necktie7 the inner side of which is pro- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as vided at a predetermined distance fromthe myinvention I have signed myname, in pres- 1o ends thereof with holes or openings, and an ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 9th elastic strip provided at its ends With hooks day of September, 1905.
adapted to be inserted into said holes or FRANK'LUDWIG I-IILL openings, said hooks being provided with l Witnesses: backWardly-directed teeth, substantially as JOHN G. EVANS,
shown and described. CHESTER L. JoHNsToN.
