, UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
LOUIS CHARLES FREDERIK FREES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKTI E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,286, dated October 28, 1884-.
Application filed June 12. 1884.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS C. F. FREEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inRetainingHooks for Neck-\Vear; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forlna part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved retaining-hook for scarfs and other neck-wear, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same in position in a scarf.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both the figures.
This invention relates to that class of socalled retaining-hooks which are applied to scarfs and other neck-wear for the purpose of preventing the same from slipping up above the collar; and it has for its special object to provide a retaining-hook of this kind which shall be detachable from and applicable to any ordinary scarf.
To this end it consists in the improved construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A designates my improved retaining-hook, formed, preferably, of wire, which is bent from the center, so as to form a U-shaped loop, B, from the upper ends of the legs of which the wire is further bent, so as to form two additional U-shaped loops, C C, at right angles and parallel to the loop B. From the upper inner ends of the loops 0 C the wire is finally bent in a downward direction, so as to form two legs or prongs, E E, the
ends of which are provided with short points.
(N0 model.)
In operation this device is attached to a scarf by simply inserting the points into the upper edge of the same on the back thereof. It will 5 be seen that the front loop, B, is adapted to straddle the shank of the collar-button, thus not only preventing the scarf from slipping up above the collar, but at the same time insuring its being set or adjusted centrally and evenly.
I am aware of thepatent to Davis, No.230,7 55, dated August 3, 1880, in which a necktie-fastener is shown, the upper end of which forms two spring holding-clasps adapted to hold the scarf in place by friction against the collar; but this construction I do not use or claim in my fastener, which straddles the shank of the collar-button from the under side, and the straight parts of which are not inclined against but parallel to one another.
-What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A device for holding or retaining neck-wear, consisting of a central U shaped loop or frame having flattened sides adapted to be inserted between the collar-band and the neokband of the shirt on opposite sides of the collar-button, a pair of U shaped end loops in planes parallel to each other and at right angles to the central frame or loop. whereby they are adapted to straddle the collar-band on the under side, and the pointed legs or prongs adapted for in sertion into the shield or fabric of the tie or cravat, as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS CHARLES FREDERIK FREES.
