. COMBINED SQUARE AND MITRE.

TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. S. WINTERBOTTOM, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Square and Mitre-Marker; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in continuing the blade of a square in the manner described hereafter, so as to form at the rear edge of the stock ah angular projection, which, in connection with the said stock, forms a'suitable instrument where'with to mark mitre-lines, without detracting from the utility of the square, and without materiallyinoroasing the expense of the same.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mode of constructing and usingth c same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side view, and
Figure 2 a view of the upper edge of my combined square and mitre-marking instrument.
A is the wooden stock, and B the steel blade of the instrument, the former being similar to the stock 'of an ordinary carpenters square, excepting that there is at the rear edge of the stock a metal plate a similar to the usual plate (that the front edge, so that the said rear edge may be faced perfectly true, and remain so for a purpose rendered apparent hereafter.
The blade B, too, is similar to that of an ordinary square, exceptipg that instead of terminating abruptly at the rear edge of the stock, it is continued beyond the same at b, and this continuation is cut away sothat an inclined edge, at :r, at an angle of forty-five degrees in respect to the stock, is presented.
The advantage of this'angular extension 13 of the blade will be understood on supposing the red lines y y to represent a strip of wood, on which it is desired to mark a mit re, t. The metal-armed rear edge a of the stock is adjusted tothe edge 3 of the wooden strip, and moved to the desired point, where the mark has to be made, when theedge z of the angular projection 12 of the blade serves to guide the pencil or other instrument in making the desired mark, it.
Amine-line, the reverse of that shown, can be made after reversing the instrument.
It will thus be seen that my improvement renders the use of a separate instrument for marking mitres unnecessary, without in any way detracting from the utility of the square, and without materially increasing the cost of the same. v r
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent The angular continuation 6,-01 the bladeo't' a square, beyondthe rear edge of the stock, for the purpose specified.
In testimonywhereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
