Description
PFLEGHAR & SCHOLLHORN.
Compasses and Calipers. No. 51,967. Patented Jany 9, 1866.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. PFLEGHAR AND WILLIAM SCHOLLHORN, OF NEW HAVEN, GON- NEOTIOUI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPASSES AND CALIPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5!,967, dated January 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK P. PFLEGHAR and WILLIAM SoHoLLHoRN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compasses and Calipers; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front or face view, and. in Fig. 2 an edge view.
Our invention relates to an improvementin the construction for adjusting compasses and calipers; and it consists in making the outer edge of the segment inclined, and arranging a block or key in relation thereto, so that, by turning the screw which passes through the said block or key, it will bear against the inclined edge of the segment and bind or hold it securely in any desired position.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct our improvement, we will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
We illustrate compasses only, for calipers it is only necessary to form the two legs accordingly.
A B are the two legs, of ordinary form, for calipers or compasses, as the case may be, jointed together at G in any convenient or well-known manner. To the leg B a segment, D, is attached, or made a part thereof, its outer edge beveled or inclined, as seen in Fig. 2. A recess is formed in the leg A, in which the segment D lies, so as to leave a space between the segment D and the body of the leg for the insertion of a key or wedge, a. Through the said wedge or key a, I place a thumbscrew, E, screwing into the leg A so as to draw the key a down upon the legAin the recess, the edges of the key being inclined or beveled to correspond with the edge of the segment D and shoulder on the leg A, as seen in Fig. 2, so that when the key a is thus forced into the space between the segmentD and shoulder on the leg A the segment cannot be moved but by releasing the key. By returning the screw E, the segment may be moved so as to open or close the legs to any desired point, and there may be set by turning the screw E, as before described.
Having, therefore, thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the beveled segment 1) and the key a with the legs of compasses or calipers, constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
FRANK P. PFLEGHAR. WM. SOHOLLHORN. Witnesses J OHN E. EARLE, JOHN H. SHUMWAY.
