Description

P. ROESSLER.
Com passes.
No. 50,037. Patented Sept. 19, 1865 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL ROESSL'ER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,037, dated September 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL RoEssLER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Compasses; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure 1, a side view; Fig. 2, an edge view; Fig. 3, a reverse side view; and in Figs. 4, 5, and G detached views to illustrate the construction.
My nvention relates to an improvement in draftsmeus compasses-such as may be used with points or with one point and pencil, and commonly called bow-compasses, and are designed more especially for the use of scholars and students, and to afiord fine points at comparatively small expense.
To enable others to make my improved compasses, I will proceed to describe my method of so doing as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I cut the two legs A and B from a sheet of brass or other suitable metal in any desirable form. The upper or larger end forms the head. I place a thin washer between the heads of the two legs, as seen in Fig.2, with other washers upon the outside. Through the several washers and legs I pass a rivet, a, or other device for securing the several parts together.
To the lower end of the leg A, I attach a barrel, 1), (see Figs. 1 and 4,) which carries the pencil-point shown in Fig. 5.
The pencil is placed in a holder, 0, (seen in Fig. 5,) barrel b on the leg A. To the other end of the said holder I fix a needle-point, d, as seen in Fig. 5.
The holder 0 may be inserted into the barrel 1) with the needle down, as in Fig. 1. \Vhen that point is required for use, or if the pencilpoint is required, withdraw the holder from the barrel and insert it again in the barrel, as seen in Fig. 6. To the other leg, B, I securely fix a needle-point, f, by soldering or otherwise, which completes my improved compasses; and I have produced a pair of compasses with a smooth serviceable joint, adjustable needlepoints, at a much less cost, and far superior to and embracing all that is now included in what is termed a school-set.
Haviu g therefore fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A reversible socket presentin g at one end a steel point and at the other a pencil, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
