SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,697, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed July 7, 1903. Serial No. 164-,599.
To (ti/Z whom, it may curl/earn:
Be it known that I, ISIDOR Krrsun, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books or Periodicals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in books or periodicals. Its object is to provide books, periodicals, or magazines with means whereby their leaves may to a great extent be cut without having the same entirely separated.
In another application, Serial No. 119,830, I have described a book or periodical having its uncut edges provided with a series of perforations or notches, so that the same may be more readily and uniformly torn apart. this my invention the leaves, which are usually connected together along their front or top edges, are cut; but instead of being entirely so a comparatively small part is left uncut, so that the contents of the leaves-cannot easily be read without tearing asunder this slight uncut part.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a per spective view of a book or periodical as used to-day with the leaves uncut. Fig. 2 is a simi lar view of a book or periodical having the leaves of same almost entirely cut, but leaving a slight portion of same uncut.
In Letters Patent of July 7, 1903, Serial No. 7 33,218, I have described a book or periodical consisting of uncut leaves and a perforation cutting out part of the uncut part and leaving part of said uncut part in its original state; but this my present application has reference only to the particular feature substantially as illustrated, described in the specilication, and more specially pointed out in the claims following the specification.
In the drawings, A is the book or periodical, of which E are the leaves, 0 the uncut edges, and (Z that part of the edges which is cut.
The mod as operand 11 of practicing this my invention is as follows: The book or periodical is made up in the same manner as is practiced to-day, and not the slightest change has to be made till the product is finished. At
this period (but it is preferred before the cover is attached) the edges are, preferably an M00 it, subjected to the process of cu tting in a manner so that all parts of the edges are removed with the exception of one or two small portions. I prefer that only one small part should be left uncut, so as not to present a serious obstacle for the reader to have these leaves cut without the help of a cutting device, and as this uncut part remains uncut only for the reason to prevent the reading of the leaves without entirely separating the same it is obvious that this uncut part need only to present a slight connection between two leaves.
To obviate misumlcrstand ing and to clearly define my invention, lv hereby declare that wherever I. in this specification or in the claims following this specification make use of the words book or periodical I understand underthe same a volume having printed therein matters pertaining to fiction, art, or science, and wherever I in this specification or in the claims following this specification make use of the words leaves or united leaves I understand under the same two or more of the leaves of said book or periodical, all of which edges are designed to be permanently attached in said book or periodical and to form part of the reading matter of the same and are not designed either in part or in whole to be detached from said book in contradistinction to such devices wherein one or more leaves or one or the other part of one or more of said leaves are designed to bedetached and are therefore not designed to form permanent parts of said device such as, for instance. copying-books, ticket-books, manifolding and check booksand 1 therefore expressly ex clude the same from the scope of this my invention.
Having now described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a book or periodical having leaves normally connected together at their exposed edges, but having said leaves out in a manner so as i to leave only one COIlillftliLbiVB small pertion of said edges in the original uncut condition. 2. As an improved article of manutacture,
a hook or periodical, the leaves of which are 3 with the length of the entire edge and remaincut at their top as well as front edges, with 1 ing uncut. the exception of a small part at the extreme j in testimony whereof I hereby sign my corner where the front and top edge meet. 3 name, in the presence of two subscribing wit 3. As an improved article of manufacture, nesses, this 6th day of July, A. D. 1903. a book or periodical, the leaves of which are 1 ISl DOR KYSEE. open at the top, bottom and front, with the exception of one portion, said portion being of a length exceedingly small in comparison Witnesses:
