EMANUEL ROTHSCI-IILID, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
MANIFOLD SALES-CHECK BOOK.
Application filed August 16, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL Ro'rHs- CHILD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifold Sales-Check Books, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sales books, and more particularly to the class of manifold sales check books.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a book of this character wherein the original and duplicate leaves are formed in a continuous sheet, the origi nal leaves being provided with stubs at one edge of each, the stubs being permanently mounted within a cover whereby on the pulling in one direction upon the original leaf the same will be torn from the stub, thus in this manner the leaves prior to the tearing of the same from the sheet will be sustained in smooth relation to each other.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a book of this character wherein the alternate leaves are connected with stubs permanently fastened within the cover of the book, the duplicate leaves being free, while the original leaves are torn from the stubs, thus in this manner the carbon sheet automatically adjusts itself successively between the original and duplicate leaves until all of the leaves have been removed from the cover.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a book of this character which is simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a perspectives view of a book constructed in accordance with the invention, the top section of the cover being shown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the original leaf detached from its stub and partially raised, together with a duplicate leaf. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the book, the sections of the cover being closed. Fig. 4; is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a plurality of original and duplicate leaves, the

same being partly separated and formed in a continuous sheet.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the manifold sales book comprises top and bottom cover sections 10 and 11 respectively, which are preferably constructed from paper, cardboard, or other suitable material, to render them relatively stiff. The outer faces of the sections may be decorated or faced with any suitable material to give the cover a neat and attractive appearance, the sections being connected by means of a back 12. The cover sections and back are preferably integrally formed, but the back is constructed to allow flexibility of the cover sections for permittingthe convenient opening and closing of the book in the ordinary well-known manner.
Formed on the bottom section 11 at one end edge thereof is an extension bent to form a substantially U-shaped binding member 13 in which is inserted a plurality of strips 14 between the uppermost pair of which is engaged one edge of a carbon sheet or transfer leaf 15 adapted to cooperate with a memorandum pad presently described. The strips 1 1 and leaf 15 are permanently secured in the binding member 13 as will be hereinafter set forth.
The memorandum pad comprises a sheet 16 providing individual leaf portions 17 and 18 which form pairs of alternate original and duplicate leaves respectively, the same being perforated at the cross lines or folds in the sheet so that the original and duplicate leaves may be separated when desired. Each original leaf is formed at its inner longitudinal edge with a stub 19 and is separable therefrom on a weakened or perforated line 20, the stubs being fastened in any suitable manner in juxtaposition to each other on the cover section 11, in this instance the said stubs 19 being stapled at 2:2 to the said section for permanently connecting the same. The staples 22 fastening the stubs to the cover section are passed through the bottom section 11 for connection with the cover of the book.
It will be noted that on raising the original leaf or slip 17 the carbon sheet or transfer leaf 15 will gravitate on to the duplicate leaf 18 so that when swinging the original leaf inwardly and on to the carbon sheet or transfer leaf 15 duplicate memorandums may be made in a single writing. l he car bon sheet or transfer leaf 15 will automatically swing into proper position between the original and duplicate leaves during the continued use of the pad and on the successive separation of the original leaves 17 from the stubs 19.
l Vhen a memorandum has been made on both the original and duplicate leaves 17 and 18 and it is desired to remove the same from the book, it is only necessary to pull upwardly and outwardly on the uppermost original leaf 1'? whereupon the latter will be torn from the stub 19 connected therewith, thus permitting the said duplicate leaf to be detached from the second original leaf of the pad in a ready and convenient manner. To bring the carbon sheet or transfer leaf 15 between the first original and duplicate leaves, the said first original leaf necessarily has to be raised and pulled outwardly. lhis construction obviates the necessity of the manual handling of the carbon sheet or the transfer leaf by the user of the book, and also by reason of the connection of the original leaf with the stub the unused leaves of the pad remain smooth and in proper order.
Provided in the line of perforations between the original leaves 17 and their stubs 19 at the end adjacent to the binding member 13 is a kerf or weakened line 23 which permits the initial tearing of the original leaf from its stub 19 without the liability of the original leaf becoming mutilated or the pulling of the said stub 19 with the original slip or leaf from the book, thereby obviating the mutilation of the stubs or the original leaves during the act of tearing each original leaf therefrom.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of ti e device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
W hat is claimed is 1. A book of sales leaves comprising a continuous sheet folded to form a plurality of original and duplicate leaves arranged respectively one above the other, and a binding stub provided at one edge on each of the original leaves only, the said stubs being permanently bound together.
A book of sales leaves comprising a continuous sheet folded to form a plurality of original and duplicate leaves arranged respectively one above the other, and a binding stub provided at one edge on each of the original leaves only, the said stubs be ing permanently bound together, each stub being separated from the original leaf for a short distance longitudinally thereof at the top and bottom edges of the same.
in testimony whereof I aiiix my si nature in presence of two witnesses.
