ACCOUNT-BOOK. No.169,828. Patented Nov. 9,1875.
N. PETERS. PNDTOL\THOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. i] C.
' UNITED SA'rns PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT MOTT AND CHARLES CARROLL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ACCOUNT-BOOKS.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. HGSLSQS, dated November 9, 1875; application filed May 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, ROBERT Mo'rr and CHARLES CARROLL, of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, .have invented a certain new and `useful Improvement in Diaries and other Books; and we declare the following to be a full description of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby all persons using diaries may find the current date at once, without being subjected to the annoyance andloss of time frequently occasioned by the necessity of turning the leaves back and forth in search of the proper place, and also to provide a means whereby all persons may turn immediately to the last writing or entry in such books as are filled by writing on each consecutive page in turn, and in' which each new writing or entry is placed directly after the preceding writing or entry.
The essence of the invention consists in removing, and in the peculiar manner or means of removing, a portion of each leaf of the diary or book, when it becomes necessary to turn the same in its regular orderin the pro-v cess of using or iilling up the book, thus enabling any one to discriminate in a moment between thatpart of the book (or diary) which has been used and that which has not, each leaf of the former part being easily distinguished by the absence of the removed portion. We deem it best to remove one corner of each leaf-the corner being detached when the leaf is turned in regular order in filling up or using the book, and we prefer the lower outer corner, as in the drawings herewith iiled. Across this corner of each leaf we make a row or line of holes, incisions, or perl forations, which serves the double purpose of -showing where the division is to be made in order to have the edges of the leaves even after the removal of the corners, and also of enabling the person using the book to remove the corner of the leaf neatly and easily without the aid of knife, scissors, or other cutting instrument.
In the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 2 show a leaf of a book before the corner o is removed. The division may be a row, line, or series of incisions, as c c in Fig. l, or of holes or perforations, as cc in Fig. 2, either being sufficient to indicate the line and to insure an easy removal of the part to be detached. Fig. 3 shows a leaf of a book after the corner is removed. Fig-.4 shows the in vention applied to a diary, `the corners of the leaves being removed, so that the book may be opened at once for the week commencing y Monday, May 3, 1875.
We are aware that lines of holes, incisions, or perforations have been used before to facilitate the tearing apart or separating of paper, and that this idea has been applied to the construction of check-books, railway-ticket books, and other books where a portion of each leaf in turn is separated for use, leaving a memorandumstub in the book. This therefore We do not claiml In a book constructed according to our invention the leaves are permanent, and no part thereof is removed for use, but the perforations are applied across a small corner or other part, which maybe separated as a refuse. piece, and in its removal does not impair the completeness and efciency ofthe entire leaf; but does afford, by its removal, a convenientindication ofthe eX tent to which the book has been used.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a diary or other book perforated across one corner, or other suitable portion of each leaf, to facilitate the removal of a refuse fragment thereof,
-without separating any portion of the leaf which is prepared or adapted for use.
ROBERT MOTT. CEAS. CARROLL.
