MECHANICS CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781.356, dated January 31, 1905.
Application filed June 3,1903. Serial No. 159,853.
Toall whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, ALBANO F. PEELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion,
in the county of Calhounand State of Michielevation in a work-bench and applied to work,
having a fragment of the lower end of the stem broken away. Fig. 2 shows the stem at by itself, its front face turned toward the ob server. Fig. 3 shows a fragment of the lower end of the clamp-stem holding a removable arm and stop therefor; Fig. 4 shows the arm shown in Fig. 3 in top or plan view on the cutting plane 4 lt-of Fig. 3. Fig; 5 shows a cross-section of the stem a on thecutting plane 5 5 of Fig. 3.
- tion is central to said angle of the facets a. and whereof its front edge projects and is Like reference-letters denote like parts throughout.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of mechanics clamps on the lines described and shown hereinafter.
A round rod a is provided on opposite sides with flat facets a, which are inclined to each other toward the front at an angle, substan-- tially as shown, ten or fifteen degrees, more or less. Between them and at the upper end of said rod or stem is a blade whose direcis held'to the arm 0 by the pin 0?" and which I edges d which are slightly inclined to each is limited inits'motion on said pinby the top other and which strike against the straight facec which forms the end of the slot be- The free end oftween said arms 0 'Both near arms '0 and 0 are shown removed to expose the mechanism behind them, as shown. The upper end of the slot between the arms 0 has aface or stop o which contacts With the shelf or stop 6* when the arm 0 falls to the position indicated by the broken outline, which shows a fragment of saidarm 0. Said parts are so adjusted as to prevent the hand cl from coming near enough to the stem to strike the users hand clasping the stem 60, which otherwise might be liable to happen, and thus produce severe injury. The stops 0* o being Within the inside of the arms 0 cannot catch the 7 03 onto the material f (here representing fragments of two boards which are being glued together) to be pressed or held, the lever 0 being in this instance passed over into the position shown in broken outlines. The stem at is passed through a hole 2' in the bench f, which by reason of. the one-sided pressure indicated by its position in the hole 71 will bind and hold with a'firmness proportioned to the pressure.
To secure any fixed adjustment of the device, an adjustable'stop g is slid on the stem a and fastened by a set-screw g to any given place, and thereby holds the clamp at any desired height above the work-bench.
By adding a rigid arm h to the stem an op posite the arm 0 there is securedanother form of mechanism for obtaining pressure. The arm 72/ has an eye 7L2, through which the rod (4 slides freely, and below said eye are opposed spurs k forming a crotch if, the inner sides of which fit on the sides a and bind to them with a force corresponding to the pressure on the platen or holder at h and also by means of the arrangement of said parts a and It hold said arm h in the same plane with the arm 0.- When the arm h is used, the stop gis placed under the eye If to hold the arm from slipping off the stem a, as it would do when hit or raised but slightly from below under it, because in that case the crotch it* would be released.
A clamp of this construction is readily adjusted and when desired permanently held to any particular adjustment, whereby it becomes an instrument of great expediency and of generally increased utility.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a bifaceted stem, said facets converging, and said stem provided with an end blade, an arm on said blade a levered eccentric above and to actuate said arm, of an arm provided with an eye and a crotch to fit said stem.
2. The combination with a bifaceted stem, said facets converging, and said stem provided with an end blade, an arm and a lever on said blade, said lever to actuate said arm, of an arm on, said stem provided with an eye and a crotch to fit said stem.
3. The combination with a bifaccted stem, said facets converging, and said stem provided with an end blade, an arm, and a lever to actuate said arm on said blade, oi. an arm on said stem with an eye and a crotch and a stop to said arm.
4. The combination with a stem having a blade at one end and a shell on its edge, of a slotted arm pivoted on said blade, provided with a stop projecting into said slot and contacting with said shelf.
ALBANO F. PEELMAN.
