JAMES S BARCLAY, OF MARION, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 58,580, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed July 13, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES S. BARCLAY, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State 'of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to. wrenches, more particularly to wrenches presenting in a single structure jaws adapted to engage a pipe or other object of cylindrical contour and jaws having parallel engaging faces adapted to operate upon a nut or other member having its opposite sides parallel.
The object of the invention is to provide, in a structure of the class described, single means for bringing both sets of jaws into operative position and for spreading said jaws to facilitate the introduction between them of an object to be gripped. r
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the type specified which is of simple and inexpensive design, which is positive in action, and which is adapted to perform in a thoroughly satisfactory manner the functions for which it is designed.
In attaining the objects above stated I prefer to make use of the wrench hereinafter describedand claimed, and illustrated in the accompany-ing drawing, forming part of this specification, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, and exact mode of assemblage of the elements may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing the invention is illustrated by a single view in perspective of the wrench with the jaws spread apart ready for use.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 and 2 designate a pair of pivoted members, each of which is cut awayat one end to permit the pivotal connection of the ,two members in the same plane. p
3 is a rivet by means of which the members 1 and 2 are connected, and 4 is a slide provided with eyes 5 and 6 for the passage of members 1 and 2, as shown. The member 2 is threaded at 7 and has mounted on the threaded por- 5 tion a knurled or milled nut 8, which lies in 1 12 and of substantially the same length.
Serial No. 165,374. (No model.)
an opening 9 in the slide 4 and forms means whereby the slide 4 may be moved longitudinally of the member 2. The members 1 and 2 have their free ends formed into jaws 10 and 11, adapted to engage a pipe or other similar round object. and the jaw 11 of the member 2 is preferably provided on its gripping-face with serrations, as shown, to obtain a better grip upon the object jammed between the jaws. The member 2 is provided at the base of the jaw 11 with a lateral extension forming a jaw 12, whose gripping-face is disposed substantiall; at right angles to the main portion of the member 2 and is provided with serrations similar to those formed on the jaw 11. The slide 4 is extended on the side projecting beyond the member 2 to form a jaw 13, having a gripping-face parallel to that of the jaw member 1 is provided at the base of the jaw The 10 with a small lateral projection 15, which serves as a stop or abutment to limit the upward movement of the slide 4 on said member. The downward movement of the slide 4 on member 2 is limited by means of arivet 16 or the like, which is rigidly secured to the said member at a point slightly below the threads 7.
The operation of the wrench will be obvious from an inspection of the drawing and from the foregoing description. When it is desired to use the wrench upon pipes or other objects of cylindrical contour, the slide 4 will be adjusted in position to a point such that the jaws 10 and 11 may have the desired degree of opening, and the object to be gripped will then be forced between said jaws until it is brought into firm engagement therewith and the serrations on the jaw 11 obtain sufficient grip on the surface of the object to enable the object to be turned by means of the wrench.
When a nut or other similar object is to be gripped between the jaws 13 and 14, the slide 4 Willbe brought by turning nut 8 into such position that the jaws have approximately the proper space between them, and when the object has been introduced between the jaws the nut 8 will be again rotated to bring the slide 4 into such position that the object will be tightly clamped between the jaws 13- and 14.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination in a wrench of a pair of members pivoted at one end and having diverging jaws at their free ends, one of said members being threaded intermediate of its ends and provided beyond the threaded portion with a lateral projection adapted to form a jaw, a slide having eyes to permit the passage of said pivoted members, and a lateral projection forming a jaw adapted to cooperate with the jaw formed by the lateral projection on one of said members, a nut rotatably carried by said slide and in engagement with the threads on one of said members, and means for limiting the movement of said slide on said members.
2. The combination in a wrench, of a pair of members pivoted at one end and having their free ends beveled to form diverging jaws and the pivoted ends adapted to serve as a handle, one of said members having a lateral projection also adapted to form a jaw, a slide mounted on both of said pivoted members and provided with a lateral projection adapted to form a jaw to cooperate with the jaw formed by the lateral projection on one of the pivot- JAMES S.
