in whose bifurcation is mounted on a pivot screw 2, a series of blades 3, 3, 3", 3. Each blade is at one end provided with a short extension 4, for taking hold of in turning the blade on the pivot, the other ends of the blades are of equal length but of such different width as to form short and long cutting edges 5 by which to cut the desired sizes of button holes, as shown in dotted lines in the upper part of Fig. 1.
Upon the pivot screw 2, which is preferably a thumb-screw, is also mounted in the bifurcation of the handle a slotted gage-bar 6 having graduation marks 7, of fractions of inches, or other suitable measure, and is provided at one end with a finger or gage 8, which projects downwardly almost as far as the cutting blade that has been turned downward into position for cutting.
The screw 2 clamps the arms of the handle against the scale bar and the blades with suflicient force to hold them frictionally in the set position, and with much care in the use of the device no other holding means might be necessary. But as all mechanics will not exercise such care, I provide each blade with an aperture 9, which when a blade is in the downward position ready for use is engaged by a catch 10 of a looking lever 11, which is pivoted at 12 to the handle and is normally held engaged by a spring 13. In Figs. 2 and 3 the pivot 12 is fixed in two lugs 14 formed upon an extension of an inlaid nut 15 in which the end of the screw 2 is threaded, the handle being in this instance, otherwise than said nut, made of wood only. But in the further improvemcnt shown in Figs. 1 and. 5 the lugs 14. are.

In the use of the device, the cutting blade of the desired size is turned downward and locked by the catch 10, the gage 8 is then moved to the desired proximity to the adjacent longitudinal edge of the blade, the screw 2 is tightened, the garment placed as 19 upon the table, board or block 20 (see Fig. 1), and after the gage 8 is brought in line with the edge of the garment the tool is pressed downward forcing the downward blade through the garment. When a different blade is wanted the operator loosens the screw 2 and by pressing the upper end of the lever 11 inward or pulling its lower end outward the catch 10 is disengaged so that the used blade may be turned into the handle and a narrower or wider blade turned downward and engaged by the catch, whereupon the gage is set, the screw tightened and the tool is ready for use. The blades not in use are guarded by being swung into the bifurcation and held there by the clamping action of the thumb screw. The short arms 4: serve as finger holds in swinging the blades.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim is:--
1. A button hole cutter comprising a handle having one end bifurcated into two cheeks, a clamping thumb-screw passed through one of the cheeks and threaded into the other cheek, a series of elongated blades pivotally mounted upon said screw within the bifurcation and having each at one end a cutting edge of a size different from that of any of the other blades, an arm arranged to indicate the distance between the end of the cutting edge and the edge of the garment operated on, an integral graduated flat scale bar extending from said indicator arm in between one of the cheeks and the adjacent blade, said scale bar having a longitudinal slot for the pivot screw.
2. A button hole cutter comprising a handle having one end bifurcated into two cheeks, a clamping thumb screw passed through one of the cheeks and threaded into the other cheek, a series of elongated blades pivotally mounted upon said screw within the bifurcation and having each at one end a cutting edge of a size difierent from that of any of the other blades, an arm arranged to indicate the distance'between the end of the cutting edge and the edge of the, garment operated on, an integral graduated fiat scale bar extending from said indicator arm in between one of the cheeks and the adjacent blade, said scale bar having a longiwhichever blade is swung out from the bifurcation and into operative position.
3. A button hole cutter comprising a hanpivo-tally mounted upon said screw within the bifurcation and having each at one end a cutting edge of a size diiferent from the cutting edge of any of the other blades, said blades having each an aperture in the part havlng the cutting. edge, a guided springpressed catch pivotally mounted on one of the cheeks and arranged to engage the aperture of whichever blade is swung out from the bifurcation and into operative position.
