SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,641, dated August 16, 1904. Application filed February 1, 11904. Serial No. 191,582- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, THoMAs DUDLEY GAYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in S2LWTHOld6IS; and I do declare the following to be' a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for holding saws while being sharpened; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this nature by'which a saw may be held upon ordinary sawhorses or benches and convenient for an operator to sharpen the saw by holding his arms and hands in convenient and natural positions.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device shown in clamping relation with a saw. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a cam-locking member.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a yoke member which is made, preferably, of metal and made of any convenient shape, preferably as illustrated in the drawings, and secured to the curved portion of said yoke by means of a screw or other fastening means is board B is a cam member K, having a slot K therein, the wall of which is inclined and adapted to bear against the inner face of the arm A of the yoke, whereby when the cam member is rotated by means of the integral lever N, forming a portion of said cam, the outer free edge of the board may be forced toward the arm A of the yoke, and between which clamping-surfaces the saw is adapted to be held.

In using my saw-holding device after the saw has been clamped in the mannerdescribed the same may be laid down upon any support, such as the sawhorse or upon a bench and may be raised a suitable distance above the bench or sawhorse in order to allow sufficient room for the operator to file the teeth.

By the provision of a device of the character described it will be observed that means is provided for holding a saw in convenient position for being filed which renders it possible to file a saw by the operator holding the file in a convenient and natural position and without the use of the ordinary fixed Vises.

While I have shown a particular construction of device embodying my saw-holder, it will be understood that I may make alterations, if desired, in the detailed construction of the same without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A saw-holding apparatus comprising a yoke having two parallel portions, one serving as a clamping-jaw, a board secured to said yoke between said parallel portions, a pivotal cam member mounted upon said board beyond one of the tapering edges of the yoke and adapted to be thrown between the inner face of the adjacent side of the yoke and said board to throw the latter in a clamping position, and an integral arm projecting from said cam and adapted to swing in contact with a tapering edge on the side of said yoke, as set forth.
