Description

No. 700,780. Patented May 27,1902.
0. KING.
AX HEAD.
(Application filed Oct. 5, 1901.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER KING, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
AX-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,780, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed October 5, 1901. Serial No. 77,670, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful AX- l-Iead, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates generally to axheads, the object of the invention beingto construct an ax in such manner that friction between the ax and the wood will be reduced to a minimum and the wedgeaction of the ax increased.
With this object in view the invention consists, essentially, in grinding away or other-' wise removing the face of the ax a short distance from the cutting edge and also providing the faces between the ground portion and the cutting edge with a series of grooves orrecesses, said grooves or recesses stoppingline 2 2 of Fig. 1. line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the ax-head, the opposing faces of which are ground away or. hollowed out,as shown at B,
said hollow portions terminating at the points B a short distance above the cutting edge 0. Between the cutting edge and the ridge B a series of grooves or recesses are produced in the opposing faces, as indicated at D, said grooves or recesses terminating at their lower ends and in a cutting edge and gradually merging'into the ridge B at their upper ends. This gradually reduces friction between the wood and the ax, and at the same time the ridge portionB"ser ves to increase the-wedge effect,or rather it maintains uniformity of the sides of the ax.
It will thus be seen that I provide an ax-head in which the friction is reduced to a minimum without removing the wedging action of the cutting-blade and body of the arc.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claimas' new, vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
As an improved article of manufacture an ax-head having a series of parallel grooves produced in its opposing faces adjacent to "the cutting edge, said opposing faces being ground away above the series of grooves, and the intervening ridge portion extending across theupper ends of the grooves, substantially as set forth. OLIVER KING.
