TO ALL WHOM IT MAYHCONCRN:
Be it known that I, RFUS D. ROGERS, of Cape Elizabeth, in the county of Cnmberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Winch; and I hereby declare the followingV to be a full, clear.,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan of my invention. 1 l Figure 2 is u. detail of the barrel, shaft, and geared wheel, and illustrates the manner in which the same may be thrown out of gear. f i
Figure 3 shows a side view of the truck to which are connected the' lever and pawl by which the winch is operated, and shows also the manner in which the truck is connected with its shaft.
Myinvention has relationA to a new combination andV arrangement of devices t9 constitute an improved winch, thc diii'erent parts of which, a nd their operation, I will describe as follows:
a shows a barrel on the shaft b, upon which is also the large gear c. This shaft revolves in bearings 1 2.3.
d is a latch which fits into the groove e. when the shaft is in the position shown in iig. 1, and retains the shaft in such position. j' is another shaft, having bearings 4 5, also gears q h z'. Upon this shaft is alsorset the truck j, to which truck is rigidly attached the lever 7c having the pawl m. n 4is a latch fitting into a groove'on the shaftf, similar to the groove e on the shaft 6. This latch n maybe raised so as to allow -the gear z' to be thrown .out from c, as indicated by the red lines in fig. 1. p isa pawl working in the 'gear or ratchet'g to sus- 'tain any weight or strain brought upon the barrel a. The truckj is composed of two parts, one part of which fits around the shaftf; the portion in a groove in said shaft, as shown in fig. 3. This portion is composed of two semi-circular pieces, as shown in the same figure, which pieces, being removed from the truck and from their groove in thc shaft, will'admit of the truck being slipped oif from the track. 'r s show two arms secured in the head t, eachhaving a bolt andY link similar to thatillu'strated at u, for the purpose of connectingfthe said arms with the frame A B, as shown at v. The head t has the sliding-bolt w, which has thehead, rectangular shank',
and hook, as illustrated in the drawing. The aperture in the hea'd t is also rectangular in form, and the square portion of thc'bolt w fits accurately therein. The purpose of this is, when the arms s are connected withthcVV frame A. B, and the hook on the bolt inserted into or connected with any object for the purpose of holding the frame in any desired position, that the said frame may not cant or tip, which would be the case if the boltsha-nk were round. Pressing the holt w inward, as shown by the dotted lines, it canbe turned to either side, as therein also indicated, in the same way.
\v The operation of the different parts of my invention is as follows: Connect the hook on the boltw with any fixed object, in order to hold the machine stationary in position; turn the shaftf by the lever which moves the said shaft by means of the pawl m in the ratchet or gear h, thus revolving the gear i which matches the larger gear c, and thus revolves the barrel a, upon which is attached and wound 'the cord or other article connected with" the object to be moved. By raisingA the latch d and moving theishaft b, as shown xrg. 2, the two gears t' and-c are thrown out of gear, and the work of themachine may be done directly from theshaft f. The shaftf may also bc thrown out of gear, and eitherfor b may be operated aloneby 'cranks applied at aj in'. 4My invention can be usefully employed for various purposes, and among others, on shipboard, tin the manner in which4 similar machines are usually employed. i i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. ,The combination and arrangement of the shaft f, pawl p, ratchet g, ratchet It, leverk, truck j, pawl m, and'v gear s', with the gear c, shaft b, and barrel a, all as and designed to operate n the manner and for the pu'rposes 'hereinbefore set forth.
2. In combination with the shaft f, the latch n and its groove on the said shaft, as and for the. purposes set forth.
3; In combination with the shaft b and groove e, the latch d, as and for the purposes setA forth. 4. '.llhc combination of the arms r s, head t, and adjustable bolt w, as and for thepurposes specified.
