TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. LEWIS, of Duxbury, in Plymouth county, and Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have yinvented a neur and useful improvement in Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which drawings make a part of this specicaton. With reference to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 isa perspective view.
Figure 2?., a front elevation.
Figure 3, a rear elevation.
Figure 4, a sectional view.
Figure 5 shows the stationary external-threaded screw.
Figure 6, the internal-threaded rotating screw.
Like letters indicate the same or like parts in all the drawings.
A stationary jaw, a, is furnished with an opening, in which are formed the grooves b and a projecting seat, 0, for the guidance and support of slide d, which forms the base of the movable jaw c. Jaw a has also a circular` Chamber,f. This chamber contains and protects from injury the stationary screw y, which is entered from the rear, and is prevented from turning by a tightly-fitting joint, or by a feather or pin, at pleasure. In the base of jaw a is formed a slot, h, for a bolt or bolts to secure the vise to a bench or other foundation; and directly over this slot is formed, in slide cl, an arched space, to. give free play for the bolt or bolts and their heads. Slide cl is made of a corresponding form above, which, with the two lips, one on each side, to play in grooves b, gives it a strong and unique character and appearance. The internal screw z' is made with a head, to which is itted a suitable handle orI lever, j. This screw is tted to turnor rotate freely in the movable jaw e, and embraces the. jaw between its head and a collar, 7c. This collar k may be pinned on, or shrunk into, a slight groove, or fastened with a screw, or otherwise, so as to serve the purpose of drawing back the jaw c to open the vise. A washer may be inserted, if desired, between the head on screw t' and the jaw a. Aside from these particulars the vise may be made of the ordinary materials, such as cast, wrought, or malleable metals, in part or whole, and of any suitable shape and configuration adapted thereto, and with independently-attached steel, or homogeneous, or chilled, faces. i
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
, i Claim.
1. I claim the arrangement and combination of the movable jaw e and internal-threaded rotating screw z' with the stationary support and jaw a, and fixed vcirternal-threaded screw g, substantially as described.
2. I also claim the arched slide d, in combination with the support a of the stationary jaw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH H. LEWIS.
