Be it known that I, DAN WELCH, of Lowell, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented n ew and 'useful improvements in Self-Adjusting Plate-Lifters; and I do hereby declare that Vthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to 'the letters of reference marked thereon.- Y

The nature of my invention consists in providing a plate-lifter with handle, stationary and swinging jaw or jaws.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation'. l

Figure 1 represents a plan of my improved selfadjusting plate-lifter.

Figure 2 represents an end elevation-of the same.

The swingingjaw E, with its arms C C, are so formed as to correspond in form/ andshape with the iixed or stationary D, with its arms B B, except at the extreme ends of the a1nis,`wl1ich`,emls are passed through the eyes E F of sulicient length to' form the loops G G, this mechanislnform'ing a joint or hinge. By this arrangement theoperator takes the lifter by the handle A, throwsor swings lthe jaw E over one edge of the plate, and 'with a slight vturn of' the handle A adjusts the jaw D to the opposite side; the plate, with its contents, -can then be safely lifted and carried to any required place, and be relieved from ,the lifter at the will oi' the'loperator. 'lhus it will be clearly seen that this' novel and simple arrangement can be instantly applied and adjusted to almost anysize plate, even if the plate and its contents are rintensely hot, and removed.y

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I claim 'the combination of the fixed and swinging jaw B. and C, arranged substantially as described and for the purpose fully set forth.
