Description

Uwifrnn STATES ALBERT P. BRIGGS, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CLAIVIP FOR FURNACE-MENSUSE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. BRIGGS, of
Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State. ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and Im proved Adjustable Clam p for Furnace-Mens Use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, ret'- ereuce being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, each part being designated by the same letter in all the tigures.
Figure l represents the clamp ready for use 5 Fig. 2, the upper piece, A, Fig. 3, the lower piece, B, and Fig. 4 the vclamp partly extended.
The clamp is made of metal, and is cast in two parts, A and B, which are held together by the clasps or straps G and D. At the outer end of A is the jaw a, and at the outer end ot' B thejaw b. These are at such an angle with A and B that the distance between the ends of thejaws, as between o and o, shall be about one inch farther than the distance between no and x. On the under side of A is the rack or ratchet with its teeth g g. 0n the upper side ot' B is the spur S. The clasp D is riveted to the piece A, but is sufficiently loose or large to permit the piece B to be moved freely within it. The clasp C is attached to the piece B,
and is made sufficiently large to allow the piece A to be raised up so that the ratchet on the under side of A shall clear the spur S, and thusv permit the clamp to be extended. 0n the upper side of the clasp C is riveted the spring E. This spring pressing on A and holding that piece againstB, thespur S locks into the teeth, as at s, and prevents the two parts of the clamp from being separated.
Its application and operation are as follows:
The two or more parts of the furnace-dash which it is desired to clamp together are placed in their proper position. The clamp is then extended by lifting the part A clear from the spur S and bringing it out as far as desired, so that the distance between the jaws shall be greater than the thickness to be clamped. Then place the jaw b (at o) on the under side of the ask, press down the piece A until its jaw strikes the upper side of the iiask. The spur S, catehiuginto the ratchet on A, prevents the parts from separating. Now push the clamp bodily on to the flask and all parts will be held firmly together.
I do not claim as my invention a common clamp with rigid or fixed jawsfas these have long been used; neither do lclaim an adjustable clamp, irrespective of the frnethod ot' itsgadjustability, as this has been accomplished by using a screw in one of tllejaws; but
I do claim as my invention- An adjustable clamp made in twol parts, regulated by a ratchet and spur, made and operating substantially as herein set forth; and I desire to secure by Letters Patent an adjustable clamp, as above described.
