IMPROVED VISE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Be it known that I PE'LER. CROWL, of Brownsville, in the county of Fayette, and State of lennsylvania, havel invented a new useful Improvement in the Construction of y Vises; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being'had' to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whichw Figure l is a perspective view and Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.

The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of identical parts.

These improvements nre made in the vise patented by myself` on the 29th of May, A. D. 1866, towhich -I make reference.

A represents the bench to which the vise is attached. Bis apla-te bolted to the bench; the'cover C is bolted thereto, the stationary C being Ia part thereof. D is the movable jaw, attached by a swivel stemto the sliding stock D which passes through a chamber formed between the plate B, (which is formed to receive it,) and the cover C. The stock has ratchet teeth out in its lower face, as shown. E is a lever pivoted upon a pin passing through lugs depending from the plate B, from which said lugs also is suspended the swinging stirrug E2, which holds the end of the spring El, by the tension of which the end of the lever E is pressed upwards the rear ehd of the lever cut away to half its thickness to receivea similarly constructed end of the 'pawl F, attached by a pivot on which it turns freely, being pressed upward and sustained with its point pressing against the rack upon the stock D by the spring F; When the long end of the lever E is drawn down, the short end presses the point of the pawl F forward, which, catching upon the rack under the stock, draws the jawD towards the jaw C. When the long end of the lever is raised, the pawl is drawn back, sliding over the inclined faces of rack. Thus by the action of the lever the jaw D is closed upon thejaw C. This motion of the leverE is effected by the foot-lover H, (a lever lof the third order,) pivoted at the inner end to the bench, and connected by the rod G with the long end of the lever E.' The notched 'plate H holds the lever H in position, retaining the grip of the vise. The adjustahle'jaw D conforms to the face of the object enclosed. This jaw may be pressed by.

hand against the object, the pawl slipping over the teeth in the rack on D', and there it is compressed and retained by pressing down the lever H.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the stationary jaw C, adjustable jaw D, and stock D', pawl F, and lever E, and springs F and El', all of said parts being respectively constructed and arranged for use substantially in the manner and for the purpose set Forth.
