IMPROVED SHOEMAKERS' BENCH.

Be it known that L-BENEDICT G-ANTNER, of rlell City, in the county of Perry, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful improvement in Shoemakers Benches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdcscription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts for holding the work on the bench and releasing it from the same. In the drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of a bench with my improvements applied, showing it in horizontal section on the line 1,1, g. 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2, figs. l and Figure 3 is a rear elevation, with partial section, on the line 3 3, figs. l and 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view, showing the construction and application of my improved stitching-clamp.
Figure 5 is an under-side perspective view of a removable metallic pad er anvil on which to do small work.
A represents the body of the bench, the front of which is made cylindrical, as shown at A1, for the reception of the tubular bottom B1 of the cushion B, und which is there provided with a door, Az, through which access may be had to the operating parts without removing the cushion, and to the bar A3, between the legs A of which the treadles C C are pivoted, These trcadlcs are prevented from interfering with each other by the curtain A5, and are slotted at their loose ends for the reception, respectively, of the ends of the straps D D, the former of which is attached to the drum d, and the latter to the spring-pawl D, which engages with the ratchet a on the end of the drum (t. c represents a coiled spring, which rests on the cross-bar d, rigidly fixed in the sides B1, and is compressed by the straps e in tighteningr the work. 'lhese straps are attached at one end to the drum a, and at the other to the cross-headf, which slides in grooves g, and to which is also attached the strap L by which the work is held. The cushion B Bl is held in its place by the dove-tailed key z', which is held in a corresponding gain in the top of the bench, and which slides into the groove j, and thus, with the shoulder B2, prevents its displacement vertically; and it is held from rotating, when desired, by the frictionlevers k 7c', the first of which is pivotcd at Z to the bench, and the end of the latter acts onv the inner wall of the groove j, so that by its friction the cushion may be held steady and prevented from turning; but, by withdrawing these levers, the cushion may be turned in either direction, its movement being facilitated by the friction-rollers m, on which the shoulder B* rests. E represents a stitching-clamp, the bottom of which is held in the central opening `of the cushion, and whose jaws are brought together by the strap t, which passes over the roller n on the inside of the hinged jaw, und through the slot o of the fixed jaw, where it is held by being hooked over the pin j). F is a metallic pad or anvil, applicable to the central opening in the cushion B, on which to do work too small for the ordinary cushion, and G is a cushion adapted tobe placed under the work, to hold it in different positions and prevent it being chafed.
The operation of tightening and loosening the work on the cushion or in the clamp is as follows: By pressing on the treadle C the drum a is rotated, and the straps e e, which are attached to the headf, are wound on it, the spring compressed, and the strap t which holds the work tightened. When it is desired to unloose the work the trcadle C is pressed, and through the strap D the pawl I) is withdrawn from the ratchet a', and th'e parts,` by the spring c, are returned to their former positions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the treadle C, strap D, drum a, and straps e L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Thecombination of the treadlc C, strap D, pawl t1, and ratchet a, or their equivalents. substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the elements of the above claims, I claim the clamp E, constructed as described, for the purpose set forth.
4. The spring e, in Combination with the bord, cross-head f, and straps e z, substantially :is and for tho purpose specified.
5. The friction device k k Z, in combination with the groove l7', arranged and operating substantially ns described.
G. The dove-tailed key z', in combination with the groove]` :rnd shoulder B27 substantially :rs :rnd for the purpose set forth.
7. The rollers m, in combination with the shouiderz7 for the purpose specified. 8. The removable cushion G and anvil F, adapted to he applied substantially as described, for thc pnrpnsi` specified.
