WALTER WARD, OF MOUNT HOLLY, NEW JERSEY.
Laim Patent No. 94,261, dated August 31, 1869;
IMPROVEMENT 1N WRENCH..
The Schedule referred to in these `Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER WARD, of Mount Holly, in the county, of Burlington, State of Newv Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
making part of this specification, and in which- 'I ent invention is more simple and practical, and less Aliable to Vget ont of repair, than any known, and at the same time more economic of manufacture.A
lo enablethose'skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in the diiferent figures.
A represents the handle, which is piyoted to the upper jaw B by pin a, the said jaw B being slotted out to receive the end of said handle.
The handle A, at the end attached to the jaw, is extended upward a short`distance, as seen in the drawings, and terminating in a toothA or point, b, the handle becoming, as it were, a pawl swinging upon the pivot a.
The lower jaw C is provided with an arm, D, one end of which is of ratched-form a'part vof the whole of its extent. The rear end of the jaw, if deemed expedient, may also be serrated toenable the two jaws to be brought in immediate contact with each other.
The ,upper jaw B is mortised, as seenat d, to allow the arm D of the jaw B to pass through the same,
so that it will be observed the faces of `the two `iaws are always moved in parallel planes.
The operation of my improved wrench is as follows:
The face of thc jaw B being placed upon one side of a nut, the rear end of the handle Abeing elevated, the point or tooth b is carried away from the ratched face of the arln- D, which is then allowed to move freely through the slot [l of the jaw B. Said jaw is then forced up against the opposite Side of the uut, when the handle is depressed or allowed. to dropto the same place in which the face of the `jaw B lies, and consequently the tooth or point b engages with the ratchetedge of the-arm D, and the nut turned, it being ohserved that the greater the force exerted at vthe rear end of the arm or handle A, the tighter the pawl grasps the arm` D, its tendencyheing to force the arm through the slot d, and thus force the faces of the'two jaws to approach each other;
By this well as any cogged gearing, avoiding any backlash 'and wear, as well as sloth in adjustment.
My wrench is capable of almost immediate adjustnient, and is so constructed that each and every part may be duplicated at slight cost, so that the breaking' of any one part doesnot render the whole useless, as the broken part may be replaced by a new one.
Having described the construction and operation of my improved wrench,.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by L etters Patent, is
The handle A, with its tooth b, engaging in the ratchet, on bar D, of jaw C, and operating' substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand,
this 6th day of July, 1869.
WALTER WARD.
