NATHAN BOOK, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.,
PATENT OEE cE.
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN K.
KRIEG & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
SHO E FORlVl OR TREE'..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,722, dated May 21, 1895. Application filed January 29, 1895. Serial No. 636,554- (No model.)
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN BOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe Forms or Trees, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a form or tree which besides being effective is readily inserted into or withdrawn from a shoe or boot, and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the form seetioned along a: m, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a section along y y, Fig. 1.
v The form 1 is adapted to fit the toe part of a shoe or boot and can be applied not only to an article to be displayed as in ashow window, but is also serviceable for a shoe or boot in actual use, as such shoe or boot when taken off can be provided with a form 1 for removing or preventing the wrinkling or loss of shape caused by wearing or use.
The form 1 by being made of suitable material such as suitably stiff leather, pulp, aluminium or the like can be made not only of proper strength, but also hollow so as to be light and cheap.
The form 1 is shown provided with a spring 2 readily formed of a rubber or elastic band secured at 3 to the form. The spring 2 is an element independent of or separate from the lengthwise movable slide or stem 5, and is engaged with an eye 4., formed on one end of the slide or stem, the opposite end of the latter having a brace-handle 6. The slide or stem 5 may be of rigid material, because the spring 2 is a separate element and operates to move the slide lengthwise.
When the form- 1 is inserted into the toe part and the stem 5 is then pressed or slid forward until the handle 6 rests or braces against the heel part of the shoe or boot, the resulting tension of spring 2 will keep the form 1 pressed into position for effective work.
To withdraw the form the handle 6 is grasped and drawn out of place, when the form will follow. To prevent the strain of withdrawal coming on the spring or elastic 2, the form has a guide or eye formed by a suitably stiff or strong strip or piece? of leather or equivalent material firmly clinched or fastened to the form. When the handle 6 and stem 5 are withdrawn, the eye or shoulder 4 of stem 5 abutting against the guide 7 will effect a withdrawal of the form without any strain being brought upon the spring by such withdrawal, so that the withdrawal willnot result in injury or dislocation of the spring. As the spring is housed in the hollow form it is protected against chafing or improper contact.
What I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shoe form or tree constructed to enter the toe part of a shoe and provided with a movable slide adapted to bear against the heel portion of a shoe and aspring independ- I ent of or separate from the slide but connected therewith for moving the slide lengthwise, whereby the form or tree is forced into the toe part of the shoe and one end of the slide against the heel portion of a shoe, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a shoe form or tree, constructed to enter the toe-part of a shoe, of a spring secured to the form or tree, and a lengthwise-movable slide connected with said 8o spring, bearing against the heel portion of the shoe and slid lengthwise by the resiliency of the spring to force the form or tree into the toe part of the shoe, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a shoe formor tree, 8 5 constructed to enter the toe part of a shoe, of a spring secured to the form or tree, a fixed guide projecting from the form or tree, and a lengthwise-movable slide connected with the spring and moving through said fixed guide to bear against the heel portion of the shoe, and thereby force the form or tree into the toe part of the shoe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing 5 witnesses.
NATHAN BOOK.
